The ideology of Modernism has been central to the foundation of these museums and it is interwoven with a whole system of aesthetics and art historical documentation. A significant feature of Modernism is its rejection of the past and complete confidence in the process of change, advocating the supremacy of the new and novel. The nature of Art history is to provide the processes by which new movements become historisized so terms like Avante Garde or Post Modernism are suggestive of the after effects of artistic tendencies. 'Modern' has changed from a state of existence to a moment in history and has therefore become 'classic', no longer Modern. The Museum of Modern Art, New York was able to shape modernism into an ideology which was perfectly in tune with American lifestyle, Puritan aesthetic tradition and capitalism. |
