Common man's act of courage retold He may be a common man. But his story is far from that of one. Hundreds of lines have been written and thousands of words spoken about his selfless bravery. Many a story has been spun around that fateful day on March 22, 2002. A hero of the people, he is. Now the government, too, has recognized his act of chivalry by awarding him this year's only Gold Medal for Bravery. The award puts him in the coveted company of 272 celebrities, lawmakers and other dignitaries to be honoured for their public and community service. But what does Wong Sai-kit himself feel about the brouhaha? Given half a chance, the 30-year-old electrician would not speak about himself. One has to persuade him because he visibly feels ill at ease recounting the event. "Well, I was conducting a routine electricity test with my (23-year-old) colleague Tam Po-ming in this huge warehouse at the Air Cargo Terminal. Many dangerous substances, including toxic gases, were stored there. It was a potentially hazardous place to work in... But we electricians know that. "We were waiting near the door, when I saw something white like smoke coming out from under the door. It took me a while to realize that it must be a poisonous gas... It was carbon dioxide, in fact. Electricity tests and changes in the warehouse temperature... or maybe the sudden heating of the place may have triggered the gas leak." Tam also won an award this year - a Silver Medal for Bravery. Another bravery award winner is fireman Wong Hon, who will get the Silver Medal for Bravery for saving people in Thailand where he was on vacation when the devastating tsunami struck in December last year. Among the more well-known awardees are Ma Lik, Ng Ching-fat, Lui Che-woo and Yeung Eng-kiong, who are given the Gold Bauhinia Star Award. chinadaily.com.cn 2 Sep 05

China - The Dagu Bell is back where it started, in Tianjin The marauders scurried ashore in 1900 and beached their landing craft on the muddy flats of the Pei Ho River near the treaty port of Tientsin. Sentries stationed at the southern Dagu Fort ran for the bell tower and began sounding out foreboding peals to warn locals and soldiers that, the barbarians had invaded. This time they had some warning, unlike in the 1850s, when the British came amid the shock, awe and hail of artillery shells and gunfire in the second opium war. The Dagu Bell continued to ring its urgency; the suppression of the Boxer rebellion had begun. These unforgiving armies of empire would eventually push their way to Peking, force further contracts and concessions from a yielding dynasty and humiliate the Chinese once more. And the bell, cast 16 years before as an early warning system, was carried off by jubilant British sailors from the battle cruiser HMS Orlando. The 105kg brown bell was off on an adventure that would span more than a century of turbulent history, on both sides of the globe. Private Thomas Pane was awarded the Victoria Cross - for his part in the attack on Dagu Fort in 1859, in which he was severely wounded. He swam a ditch and attempted to enlarge a hole in the wall of the fort, through which the British eventually entered and forced General Yue Wei Yi's troops to surrender. en.chinabroadcast.cn 6 Dec 05 |

The solicitation will end on March 26, 2006, with the winning design expected to be unveiled in the middle of this year. "Design proposals are expected to interpret the themes and values of the Olympic movement with Chinese style, culture and spirit," Zhang Ming, deputy director of BOCOG's culture and ceremonies department, told a press conference. A judging panel made up of BOCOG officials and experts will evaluate all the entries after the solicitation campaign ends. "Eight designs shall make a shortlist with each winning a prize money 20,000 yuan (about 2,500 US dollars)," said Zhang. "The judging panel will then pick three out of the eight shortlisted candidates and they will scoop a further 30,000 yuan (about 3,750 US dollars) a piece," she added. As required by the BOCOG, a complete set of proposal should be composed of the images of both the obverse and the reverse of the medal, the medal ribbon, the medal presentation box and diploma.
