EASTSIDE MOB

The Eastmob was founded by Giovanni Vitale a former lieutenant for the Gianolla brothers. Outraged by the murder of Peter Bosco "another Gianolla lieutenant and partner of Tony Gianolla in a bakery on Congress street," Vitale organized men who had been previously loyal to Bosco and along with other former Gianolla chiefs Sam Cipriano and Joseph Stefano formed the Vitale gang in 1918. Vitale solidified his position as one of the strongest leaders of the Italian Underworld along with the Gianolla gang by forging a loose alliance with the Jewish Purple gang and courting several Gianolla gunmen and lieutenants such as Chester LeMare who switched and became an open supporter of Vitale following the elimination of Tony and Sam Gianolla in 1919. Vitale's battle for control of Detroit was spurned on by the desire to control the lucrative liquor trade created with the advent of prohibition shortly after the first shots were fired in the fued. The ultimate outcome of the war cost both gangs in excess of 100 lives including those of both leaders.

Following the death of both Vitale and the Gianolla brothers, the war soon was put to rest the charismatic Sam Catalanotte, a leader in the powerful Unione Sciliana. Catalonotte became the most dominant figure in Detroit's Italian underworld but chose to install members of each gang "East and West side," as his chief aides while dipensing needed wisdom as the occasion warranted. Catalanotte handed the reigns of the former Vitale gang over to Giuseppe Manzello and then Angelo Meli, " who became a partner along with Leo Cellura of Westside Mob leader Chester LeMare in several Hamtrammck nighspots and liquor deals." Meli with assistance from his cadre of young up and comers chose Vito William Tocco and Joseph Zerilli as his chief aides. A form of this arrangement would continue to exist for much of the next 50 years.

Meli,Tocco and Zerilli would continue to follow Catalonotte's Pascuzzi combine pact upon his peaceful death in 1930. The trio would join forces with the Licavoli brothers Down River Gang completing the circle of power which would direct organized crime in Detroit Michigan for the remainder of the century. One of the first acts the new combine agreed upon was to eliminate Chester LeMare after he viciously murdered two former allies of Sam Catalonotte in the Vernor Fish Market after the two had attended a meeting on behalf of The Eastside Mob seeking some sort of resolution to their differences.
