Following the death of both Vitale and the Gianolla brothers, the war soon was put to rest the charismatic Sam Catalanotte, a leader in the powerful Unione Sciliana. Catalonotte became the most dominant figure in Detroit's Italian underworld but chose to install members of each gang "East and West side," as his chief aides while dipensing needed wisdom as the occasion warranted. Catalanotte handed the reigns of the former Vitale gang over to Giuseppe Manzello and then Angelo Meli, " who became a partner along with Leo Cellura of Westside Mob leader Chester LeMare in several Hamtrammck nighspots and liquor deals." Meli with assistance from his cadre of young up and comers chose Vito William Tocco and Joseph Zerilli as his chief aides. A form of this arrangement would continue to exist for much of the next 50 years. Meli,Tocco and Zerilli would continue to follow Catalonotte's Pascuzzi combine pact upon his peaceful death in 1930. The trio would join forces with the Licavoli brothers Down River Gang completing the circle of power which would direct organized crime in Detroit Michigan for the remainder of the century. One of the first acts the new combine agreed upon was to eliminate Chester LeMare after he viciously murdered two former allies of Sam Catalonotte in the Vernor Fish Market after the two had attended a meeting on behalf of The Eastside Mob seeking some sort of resolution to their differences. |
