Antonino J. (Tony) Ruggirello

Section Leader
1920-1980

Tony Sr.

In a career which spanned 60 years, Tony Ruggirello built a reputation on violence and mayhem. Tony's police record consisted of more than twenty entries wich ranged from murder to armed robbery and receiving stolen property. A man capable of extreme brutality as evidenced by the two dozen murders he was suspected of having a hand in, Ruggirello remained calm and in control at all times. Tony first rose to the attention of the Detroit public when during the Gianolla/Vitale war he was arrested on suspicion of killing underworld figure Sal Brilato. Inspite of the testimony of a Detroit policeman that Ruggirello was the man he saw fire the fatal shots at Brilato, Tony walked establishing a pattern which would continue his entire career. The proud father of two sons, Ruggirello's place in the outfit was taken by his son Antonino Ruggirello Jr., in the late 60s. Tony Ruggirello died of natural causes in 1980. 1
