A Christian Mother

God gives us many gifts,
But far above any other,
The first and best He gives us
Is the gift of a Christian mother.

Her head bows over the Scriptures
Teaching children from God's Word.
Her hands are always busy
Doing service for her LORD

Whenever her children need her
They know she's always there.
Her beauty's in the strength of faith
That she daily finds in prayer.

Her children love and bless her,
And in their lives we see
The lessons of the Saviour
That were learned at mother's knee.

Leah Mae Guthrie grew up in a Christian home.
Her grandmother Bonar was a Methodist and her grandmother Guthrie went to the Country Christian Church.
Leah was baptised in the Republican River on May 15, 1937, thus joining the Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ) Church in Indianola at the age of 15. The church was located 1 block off Main street.

When she moved to Austin, Texas she became a charter member of South Austin Christian Church. Leah continues to take an active part in her Church being one of the few charter members left. She has served the Lord as a Deaconess, Tresurer to The Womens Fellowship, and a Committee Member for the Church Board. She was honored as Deaconess-Emeritus in 1998.

It was her dedication to going to Church that caused Pastor Hawkins to come to their home and talk to her husband Lewis. He often told the story of how Pastor Hawkins came over while he was digging a sewer hole in the back yard, the pastor got in the hole with him and started helping. This got Lewis' attention and he decided this was a man he could relate to. Lewis joined Leah in serving the rest of his life at the South Austin Christian Church as Teacher, Elder, Deacon, Board Member, and even Preached a few Sermons when the Ministers were away. He was honored as an Elder-Emeritus before he died.
