BOAT CRUISE May 26(Thu)

- 2nd Annual Boat Cruise!! -

On the evening of Thusrday, May 26, JAVA took a four hour boat cruise around Toronto Harbour. JAVA staff member and social coordinator Atiq Ahmed organized the evening and invited members from other Japan-related associations based in Toronto, such as CJST, JETAA, and JCSA. The boat was a sturdy two-storey cruise ship with lots of windows and outdoor deck space, perfect for watching the sun set shortly after the boat left the dock at 8pm. This was the first time that I had ever seen the city skyline from the lake, and it was breathtaking. As the beauty of the sunset faded into the night sky, the lights of the skyscrapers stood out in strong contrast and continued to provide an impressive sight to those who remained on deck after the chill from the lake air set in.
Inside the ship, light snacks were devoured as they were served and the DJ started to spin records up on the second floor. The dancehall reggae and hiphop hits brought most of the passengers to the dancefloor area to check it out, and after a few more drinks, the boat was rocking. Those who weren't dancing were chatting with old friends or busy making new ones from the diverse crowd of Japanese, Canadians, and others.
When the boat finally docked around midnght, everyone felt a bit of relief to be back on terra firma. The crowd dispersed from the harbourfront and left for home, full of appreciation for the beautiful scenery and the great conversations that they enjoyed on the second annual CJST/JAVA/JCSA/JETAA boat cruise. Hope to see you all aboard again next year!

THE Jiu-Jitsu

This is the first collaboration of Yuta and JAVA with "Toronto online"!
Ever since I came to Toronto I have tried to challenge myself at every opportunity, and not just in my English studies.
So when I read about the free introductory martial arts class at Rebellion Jiu-jitsu on Toronto online, I jumped at the opportunity.
It was cold and drizzly on the day of the class, but more than twenty students soon were busy warming up the Judo studio when I arrived. When I saw the moves that I was supposed to learn, I lost my nerve a little, but Omer the owner of Rebellion Jiu-jitsu was so open-hearted that my anxiety soon faded. Steve our instructor made sure everyone understood what to do with simple expressions and plenty of patience. The class was exhausting, but afterwards I felt extremely rewarded by this unforgettable experience.

TAX RETURN SEMINAR Mar.26(Sat)

- Your REFUND is....$$$!? -
Tax Return Seminar was held @ NAJC Hall. You can ask an agency to file tax return form for you, but this is absolutely one of interesting experiences! Why not do it yourself!? For those people who wanted to claim tax return themselves, JAVA held Tax Return Seminar.

■ NJCA・JCCC New Year Party Jan. 23rd (Sun)

The New Year Party/ Hyakunin Isshu Contest was held at JCCC with the joint collaboration of NJCA and JCCC. Many Japanese organisations set up booths with mouth watering Japanese treats like Shiruko, Udon, Oden, Yakisoba, etc. It was enough to make one nostalgic. Other booths included shodo (Japanese calligraphy), Japanese folk items, books, shiatsu, etc. Not only did the Japanese seem to enjoy themselves, but also Canadians, who love Japan, seemed to be having a lot of fun too.
JAVA volunteered to help organise the venue, help judging for the Hyakunin Isshu contest, etc. A few groups ventured as contestants but were defeated at the hands of junior and junior high school students who were well versed and had been practicing for weeks. The children were in for some serious business!!! All the time and help given by the JAVA members who came to help, was highly appreciated by everyone. Thanks a lot fellaws…!
