"Good Morning. Mr. Somers, Report." The Captain breezed onto the bridge.
As
usual she was early and alpha shift had not yet taken over. Lieutenant
Sommers had the bridge on gamma shift and little to report--everything
running well --no unusual activity--quiet night. Captain Janeway
relieved and dismissed him, taking her place on the bridge. She greeted
each member of alpha shift as they took their respective places on the
bridge. Things had been relatively quiet of late and they were due
to enter orbit of the M class in about four hours; the mood on the bridge
was up beat. The Captain had been in a good humor for weeks now,
but even so, today she seemed to sparkle, which was in sharp contrast to
her first officer who appeared a little under the weather. Banter
on the bridge was more lively than usual. When the senior staff met at
0900, Chakotay had little to say and the Captain was on her second cup
of coffee since shift began, they seemed to avoid looking at one another.
None of this went unnoticed, by Tom. Plans were finalized and final
preparations
were made for the away teams and by 1000 hours and the Captain's fourth
coffee, the senior staff filed out to take up their respective posts.
"Commander, may I speak with you?" The Captain requested as they left, not that Chakotay appeared in any hurry to leave. She waited until the door swished closed before speaking again. "What's the matter, didn't sleep well?"
"Couldn't sleep. That bitch next door made a hell of a racket all night long." He smiled. "And I don't main line caffeine like some people I know."
"Maybe you should eat your breakfast---you'd feel better."
"Couldn't do that either--wasn't any left."
“You do look god awful, maybe you should get some rest." She came around the desk, placing her hand on his shoulder. "Sure you're only tired?"
"Yea, I'm fine, but I'll rest if you come with me." He kissed he hand.
"Some rest that would be!" She gave him her crooked smile. "Seriously, I want you to go rest, at least for a few hours. Need you in good shape for your away team tomorrow."
"Besides, you feel guilty for keeping me up all night?"
"As I recall; I was not alone. Now go get some rest and I'll see you later."
"Is that an order?"
"Yes, if that 's what it takes, that's an order." I'll expect you back on the bridge at 1530 to relieve me. I'll need a nap by then myself." She bent and gave him a quick kiss before striding onto the bridge.
The Captain took her seat and Chakotay went straight to the lift and directly to his quarters, Tom didn't miss any of it. Several hours later, Tuvok was off preparing his security teams, Harry had beamed down with his team and the Captain was called to engineering.
"Mr. Paris, you have the bridge. I'll be in engineering if you need me."
"Yes Captain." As soon as the lift doors closed. "Computer locate Commander Chakotay."
"THE COMMANDER IS IN HIS QUARTERS"
"What is his present state?"
"COMMANDER CHAKOTAY IS SLEEPING"
*Very interesting.* Tom wasn't sure he really had anything here, but it was beginning to get interesting.
"Away team to Voyager." Harry's voice came over the comm.
"Go ahead Harry." Tom answered.
“Tom, it looks good down here, plenty of editable stuff, Neelix will have a field day. No sign of any significant life forms. We're headed toward the mountain to check on dilithium deposits. I'll check in when we get there. Tell Tuvok he can start harvesting details whenever he's ready."
"Understood Harry, Voyager out." Tom tapped the comm. again "Bridge to Janeway"
"Janeway here. Go ahead, Tom"
"Harry just checked in --everything's OK down there---said to start harvesting. He's checking on dilithium deposits now."
"Acknowledged. Inform Mr. Tuvok. Janeway out."
Tuvok sent three teams to the surface. Neelix went with the first team and thought they had discovered heaven. So many different colors and flavors, all of which appeared to be safe for human consumption. His head was spinning with new recipe ideas. By all appearances the crew would be well fed for a long time. The teams collected samples of each plant and after preliminary scans on the surface, beamed them to the doctor for more in depth study.
Sickbay was beginning to resemble the hydroponics bay, plants of all description covering every available surface. Ensign Perkins carefully labeled each sample, arraigning them so that the doctor, who was being assisted by Seven of Nine, could perform an analyses of each type. The Ensign monitored the results and advised the different landing parties which plants had been cleared for harvesting. As each plant was cleared and harvested they were transported to cargo bay two where Ensign Wildman was overseeing a crew charged with their organization and storage.
Ensign Kim had confirmed large dilithium deposits in the mountain region of the planet and Lieutenant Torres, herself led a team to join him in the mining expedition. Mining operations were proceeding well and some of the dilithium was already on board.
By 1500 hours, there were five away teams working on the surface and Voyager and her crew were a buzz of activity. Cargo bay two was fast filling up with editable plant life and the refining of dilithium crystals, transported earlier in the day, had already begun. With the away teams entrenched in their respective activities and transportation of goods well under control, Mr. Tuvok and the Captain had returned to the bridge to continue monitoring the crews progress. Right on time, at 1530, Commander Chakotay returned to the bridge, looking considerably better than he had earlier. Captain Janeway promptly handed him a padd, turned the bridge over to him and headed for the lift
The padd brought the Commander current with the progress the away teams had made in his absence, gave him a run down on the current conditions on both the planet and the ship and contained a short personal note. 'Wake me when dinner is ready---your turn,' Chakotay read over the notes smiling broadly at the last one--Tom noticed.
By 1700 hours light on the planet was just beginning to fade, Chakotay ordered all away teams back for the night and reviewed the schedule for he next day. Two teams were assigned to harvest food and another two were to mine dilithium. Four teams, including himself, Sam and Naomi were scheduled for shore leave-two would be staying over night, choosing to camp by the river and two would return to the ship. His group would be returning, but he hoped to talk the Captain into a camping trip of their own in a day or two. At least half the crew would be planetside tomorrow, Kathryn should be happy. It was 1800, with everyone safely on board Voyager, when Chakotay officially turned the bridge over to Beta shift and headed to his quarters.
A quick shower and change of clothes and he headed to Kathryn's quarters. He decided making dinner there was a better idea. Not ready to wake her he didn't bother to ring the chime. Chakotay keyed in his override and entered. The lights were dim- not seeing her- he went quietly into the bedroom. Chakotay stood in the doorway watching her. Kathryn was asleep on her side, facing him, her hair spread out across the pillow, one leg protruding out from under the covers which stopped at her waist. Her hands were tucked under the pillow, leaving him just a glimpse of the porcelain swell of her breasts, above the peach satin nightgown she wore. Chakotay was so taken by the sight of her, he stood for several more minutes just gazing at her, drinking in her beauty. Reluctantly, he turned away and went about preparing dinner. He set the table and programmed dinner, allowing him time to wake her up.
"Computer lights to 50%, music selection Janeway alpha 745." Chakotay made his way to the bedroom. He stood a few minutes just looking down at her before he knelt beside the bed. He leaned over her softly kissing each eyelid until they began to flutter. Chakotay sat back on his heals and watched her slowly come to life.
Kathryn smiled up at him, reaching her fingers out to trace the tattoo on his forehead as she stretched.
"Hi." Her voice was warm and thick with sleep.
"Dinner is almost ready, sleepy head." He leaned down brushing his lips against hers.
"Mummm---tastes good." She murmured into his mouth as her arms encircled his neck drawing him down to her. "I think I'll have more."
*Dinner will keep.* He thought as she pulled him down on top of her. He moved to her side rolling her onto her back, without ever breaking their kiss. Chakotay ran his hands across the soft satin material covering her breast, feeling her nipples stiffen at his touch. She turned to him, her hands unfastening his shirt, continuing down to remove his trousers. Kathryn trailed kisses down his neck, grazing his nipples with her teeth, licking and lightly nipping a path down his body. He ran his hands through her hair, down over her shoulder, slipping off her straps, before she slid from his hands. Kathryn sat up next to him, her hands gliding over his thighs, parting his legs, lightly stroking him. Soft touches that almost weren't, sent a shiver through him. Tucking her feet up under her, she leaned over him, until he could feel her warm breath caress his body. She raised herself to her knees taking the tip of his erection in her mouth, gently holding him between her teeth, as her tongue savored the first salty drops of fluid. Reaching for her, he caught the edge of her night gown and pushed it up over her hips. Chakotay could feel her sharp intake of breath, as his hand sought the moisture between her legs. She responded by taking him fully into her silken mouth, her tongue making torturously slow swirls, while her teeth gently grazed him. The force of her mouth increased in direct proportion with the movement of his fingers until she was forced to relinquish him. She brought herself around covering his mouth with hers, rolling back to draw him over her. Sliding his hands down her body, Chakotay released her mouth and began kissing a trail down her neck. His fingers sought the wetness between her open thighs, his lips enclosed her erect nipple; she arched toward him letting out a deep moan. Kathryn brought his hands up to her face sucking the taste of her from his fingers as she wrapped her legs around his waist pulling him to her. Molding her mouth to his, she matched him thrust for thrust. He felt her stiffen and tighten around him. Digging her nails into his back, she threw her head back as he lost himself to her and they cried out together. Collapsing on her, hearts pounding together, they held fast to each other while the universe righted it's self again.
"The inertia dampers must need recalibration--'cause I keep losing my center of gravity." She commented, trying to catch her breath, as she ran her fingernails down his back.
"I'll have B'Elanna check it." He replied easing himself to her side. "But we'll have to explain what we were doing when we noticed it." He grinned at her, as he bent down to kiss her.
"Good point, guess we shouldn't ask just, - yet. I wonder if she and Tom have noticed?"
“I don't think Tom gets a chance to notice much---except maybe which bones she's broken this time." He laughed.
"So I've heard. Is B'Elanna really that rough?" She regretted asking. It was just an idle question, she hadn't meant to sound like she were fishing for information on Chakotay's previous experiences. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to pry--I.." She was getting flustered "Oh hell, just forget I said anything."
"Kathryn, relax." He grinned "Yes, she can be. No, she never broke anything of mine, but than I'm a bit bigger than Tom." He kissed her. "And you can ask me anything, anytime. I have no secrets from you."
"I know, I just didn't mean to ask---not about you anyway."
"Can I ask you something?"
"Yes"
"Does it bother you?" He looked at her so intensely she could feel his eyes. "Does it matter to you, that B'Ella and I were once lovers?"
"No." She didn't hesitate to answer as she looked directly into his eyes so he could see the truth in her words. "I have thought about I--I won't deny it---but it doesn't bother me. The result was a very deep--very real friendship, that I think both of you are very lucky to have. I'm not jealous of that ---what you two have is very special and I think it's great. What we have is something very different and unique to us---it's also very special and I'm just glad I didn't ruin it---that you never let me ruin it."
"I love you." He brushed her lips, stopping to look in her eyes before deepening the kiss.
"I love you- too." She broke off the kiss. "But I believe you were supposed to feed me and if we don't stop now we never will." She rolled away from him.
"Five years I try to get you to eat---suddenly you're hungry all the time." He grumbled as he rolled off his side of the bed.
She slipped into the bathroom while he rifled through the bed trying to locate his pants. In the few minutes she was gone he managed to get semi- dressed and put dinner on the table. He lit the dinner candles, poured the wine, lowered the lights and changed the music selection and was waiting by her chair to seat her.
As she moved to be seated, she ran her fingers lightly across his bare chest. "Nice outfit." Turning to sit her hair brushed against-- him the combination of which caused a groan. "If you can tear yourself away from my body long enough-- we can have dinner." He seated himself across from her. "Dinner WAS your idea wasn't it?"
"Yes, I believe it was and I am starving. Smells good." She was already attacking her food and spoke now with a mouthful "Delicious--Hey - what do you mean If I can tear myself away?"
"Just what I said---seems to me every time I come in here lately--You attack me." He gave her a grin employing THOSE deadly dimples. "A bit aggressive ---aren't we?"
"I do NO..." She stopped--thinking over the last two days, blushing. "It's not aggression---it's -it's just my duty as Captain to make 'first contact'."
“First Contact?---so that's what we're calling it these days---well you have made first contact with me three times in the last twenty hours. Considering we worked for nine or ten of those ---well--looks like aggression to me." He sat back smiling as she busied herself with her food. They both knew she had to make the first moves---at least the first time, but he enjoyed teasing her. "I always wondered how Mark could possibly let you fly off into space and leave him all alone---I guess he just needed the rest."
"Very cute. We could always go back to the way it used to be." She threatened, finally looking up from her meal. "What's the smirk about?"
"Just thinking---You never cease to amaze me."
"How so?"
"In all the time I had to imagine what this would be like,---and I had PLEANTY of time--it never occurred to me that once you got started there would be no stopping you." He chuckled "Not complaining mind you---just surprised."
"OK, lets be sure I have this right. I keep you waiting way too long, I'm too aggressive, I'm apparently insatiable--so translate---I'm a procrastinating, pushy, horny - what was you call me yesterday? - oh yes - vixen. Anything else?
"Well, now that you ask ---I never expected you to be so-so --vocal." He could barely control his laughter. "You always present that uptight Captain face---who would know?"
"Uptight----good--oh, I almost forgot I eat too much too. So I'm a 'Procrastinating, uptight, loud, pushy, horny, vixen with an eating disorder.' Does that about cover it?" She couldn't help laughing, Chakotay was all but rolling on the floor. "I'm sure glad you love me 'cause I wouldn't want to hear what you would call me if you didn't."
"Kathryn, I wasn't complaining." He laughed so hard he was crying. "I happen to adore loud, pushy, uptight, chubby, insatiable vixens---at least this one."
"Chubby!---Now I'm chubby--boy MISTER. - maybe you would do well to remember I can make sure you spend the next sixty five years in the brig."
"Alone!" His eyebrows raised in mock horror, he crossed over to her taking her hands.
"Yes, and no visitors----well maybe no visitors --but me." She stood up to join him.
“Kathryn! If we keep this up who will run the ship?" He pulled her close.
"Tuvok."
She kissed him.
Tom had dinner with B'Elanna, Harry and Jenny Delaney, in the mess hall before heading to Sandrine's for a drink and a game of pool. B'Elanna and Jenny won the first game and were well on their way to a second victory.
"Harry and I are going on a picnic tomorrow ---are you two getting any shore leave?" Jenny asked B'Elanna as Tom clapped Harry on the back with a wink and Harry just rolled his eyes.
"Not tomorrow, maybe the day after. I've gotta supervise the dilithium shipments." B'Elanna answered, turning to Harry. "Nice job uncovering that stuff today."
"We aim to please, Maquis." He took a shot. "What's with your buddy the Commander? Looked like hell this morning and Tom tells me he took a long nap, while we were planetside."
"Yea, he did look bad at the meeting, but I don't know anything. How do you know he took a nap?" She grabbed Tom's arm. "Spill it!"
"Well, you know he looked bad---was real quiet too. He left the bridge right after the meeting---so later when I got the chance, I asked the computer and he was in his quarters asleep. He's OK though 'cause he came back around 1500 hours---looking good." Tom shook his head. "But as soon as he took the bridge the Captain left and I found out she was sleeping too!"
"Really? Been quiet lately---no reason for them to be overtired." B'Elanna smiled - more to herself than her companions. "Are they scheduled for shore leave?"
"I only saw tomorrow --He is ---with Sam and Naomi, but she's not." Tom was out of information. "I do wonder where they are now though."
"Shall we?" Harry looked around and received nods from all. Not wanting to use the comm. system, He stepped over to a terminal and asked for their locations.
The screen flashed."CAPTAIN JANEWAY AND COMMANDER CHAKOTAY ARE ON DECK THREE, SECTION 301. THE CAPTAIN'S QUARTERS."
"Well I wonder what they are doing there?" Tom typed another question into the terminal. Status?
"STAUS: NORMAL- BOTH ARE ALERT, AWAKE, HEART RATE NORMAL- BLOODPRESSURE-NORMAL"
"Come on guys, their going over reports or something---if they both took time off today you know they will make up for it; they're both workaholics." B'Elanna tried to sound convincing.
"Yea, guys --we've seen them eat together in their quarters before--let's play pool. Unless you boys want to concede that we're better." Jenny taunted.
The ladies took the men in a few more pool games before calling it a night. Harry walked Jenny home while B'Elanna and Tom left for her quarters, without giving their senior officers another thought. Had anyone bothered to ask, the computer would have told them the command team were sound asleep, entwined together in the Captain's bed.
The Captain and Commander joined several members of the Senior staff in the messhall, for breakfast. Harry and Tom were taking a ribbing about last nights losses and the mood was generally up beat. The Captain and Tom were due on the bridge at 0800 and Chakotay, Jenny and Harry were scheduled to beam down shortly after that. Ensign Samantha Wildman and Naomi, 'Captain's Assistant' finished breakfast across the room and Naomi headed straight for the Captain's table.
"Good morning, Captain, Commander." Naomi was obviously excited about today's shore leave.
"Good morning." They responded in unison.
"Captain, I will be leaving on my away mission soon, any special instructions?' She looked up eagerly, to the Captain.
"Well, Naomi ---I am planning on going planetside, in a day or two and I would appreciate it if you would scout it out for me and advise me on the best locations." Kathryn smiled
"Yea, Captain, I will give you a complete report when I get back." Naomi looked very serious.
"Now don't forget, I want to have lots of fun -so be sure and do a lot of fun things today so I'll be prepared."
"Aye, Captain, I will." Naomi smiled. "Oh, Captain, You have the bridge today and Commander you're with me." Naomi nodded at the Captain and turned to leave.
"Assistant Wildman." Kathryn called after her as she turned. "Take good care of the Commander. I'll be needing him back." Kathryn winked at Naomi--or the Commander--or maybe both, as Naomi took his hand and began dragging him out the door.
"Aye, Captain." And they were gone.
The Captain spent most of her day on the bridge. Everything went according to plan, the food stores would be full by the end of the day and they had mined as much dilithium as they could hold. A few more days here to be sure everyone had an opportunity for some R&R and they would resume their journey home. At 1700 hours, Kathryn turned the bridge over to beta shift and retired to her quarters. It would be getting dark on the planet soon and she was expecting Chakotay for dinner. Before she had time to change, her door chimed.
"Come." She called from her place on the couch, Looking up she was surprised to find not only Chakotay but Naomi and Samantha as well.
"Evening Captain, I can give you a full report later, but I was wondering if it might not be better to show you what I discovered. Neelix and I are going planetside tomorrow afternoon--would you accompany us?" Naomi blurted out.
"Well, that sounds like a good idea. I'll let you know definitely in the morning. I could use some fresh air--will that be acceptable?"
"Certainly Captain. I'll speak to you in the morning." Naomi started toward the door. "Oh --Captain, I'm returning the Commander--unharmed." She flashed a smile and ran out the door Samantha right behind her.
"Did you put her up to that?" Kathryn looked up to Chakotay.
"No, sorry I can't take credit ---but it's not a bad idea. If you play your cards right, when you're finished playing with Neelix and Naomi, I could meet you and we could have a picnic dinner."
"And if you play your cards right maybe, we could work in a little camping trip." She smiled shaking her head." This does sound pretty good--now how about dinner. Shall we stay here or see what the crew is up to?"
"Dinner? Again with the food? I barely get a hello--just feed me!" He ducked, as she tossed a pillow at him.
Kathryn got up and crossed over to him. She placed her palms on his chest and slowly slid her hands up around his neck, running her fingers through his hair. She brought his mouth down to hers brushing a soft kiss across his lips, tracing the outline with her tongue and gazing deeply into his eyes before deepening the kiss.
"Better?" When he nodded, she bent her head back and smiled. "Now can we eat?"
"Come on, we'll see what Neelix has cooked up for dinner." Grabbing her arm and dragging her toward the door-both laughing
The Captain and her First Officer sat at a small table tucked in a corner of the mess hall. From here they could observe the crew and be present and available to them without being intrusive. A happy crew they were, these citizens of Voyager, at least at present. The mess hall was buzzing with activity, several different members of the crew stopped to speak with the Captain; nothing important just to make contact, to know they could approach her if necessary, it was comforting to both the Captain and her crew. Neelix spotted them and made his way across the busy room.
"Good evening Captain, Commander. Hope you are enjoying your meals?" They nodded. "Captain, am I to understand that I will have the pleasure of your company tomorrow?"
"It does look that way Neelix. Naomi makes a very tempting offer."
"Good, than I'll pack lunch for three or will you be joining us Commander?" He looked at Chakotay, but watched the Captain for reaction from the corner of his eye.
"No, I'm afraid I'll be working tomorrow; someone has to mind the store."
“Yes and a good job you'll do--I'm sure." He wasn't sure what Chakotay meant but then he didn't always understand these humans. " I hope to see you tomorrow, Captain, good night."
After Neelix left they stayed only a few minutes more then retreated to Kathryn's quarters. Tom, who seldom missed anything, noted their arrival and departure. He and B'Elanna had offered to take Naomi on leave with them tomorrow, but Sam said she was going with Neelix and of all people the Captain. Shore leave sure made for some strange couples these days--Sam and Chakotay---Neelix and the Captain---what next Tuvok and Seven? *Boy that WOULD be something.* Tom chuckled to himself and made a mental note to check the roster for tomorrow's shore leave.
The Captain spent most of the morning on the bridge. She planned to meet Neelix and Naomi at 1100 hours in the transporter room, first she needed to finalize her plans.
"Commander, may I speak with you in my ready room?" She spoke in her formal command voice. She proceeded to her ready room, with the Commander in tow. "Naomi and Neelix are returning to the ship at 1800 hours; what time can I expect you?" She turned to him, the moment the doors closed.
"1802?" He put his arms around her.
"Better make it 1830, just in case." She smiled up at him. "There is a small bag inside my door, could you bring it for me?"
"For you--anything." He showed her the killer dimples.
"That reminds me, maybe I should bring my boots." She chuckled and gave him a quick kiss. "I better get changed or I'll be late--see you later." She turned opening the door to the bridge. As she did Chakotay gave her a quick pat on the bottom just before a very startled looking Captain walked out, onto the bridge.
The weather was ideal for a picnic, a warm sun and a cool breeze. The unlikely trio spent a delightful afternoon playing games and exploring caves along the edge of the beach. Later in the afternoon, Kathryn and Naomi went for a swim while Neelix took a nap under a big shade tree. Everyone had a wonderful time and Kathryn even got to sneak in a few lessons about the plants and rock formations native to the planet, which she thinly disguised as a game. Naomi enjoyed learning at least as much as playing and most of all she loved spending time with her two most favorite people--Neelix and Captain Janeway. At 1730 the little group reluctantly began to pack up for their return to Voyager.
Naomi heard some sounds from over the rise and believing it to be other crew members she climbed the hill for a look. Kathryn's first inkling that something was wrong was the terror on Naomi's face as she raced down the hill. She ran straight to Kathryn and began to pull her in the direction of the caves.
"Captain, Captain come on." She tugged on Kathryn.
“Naomi, What is it? What's wrong?" Kathryn ran along with her, signaling Neelix to follow.
"Men, ugly men with big guns--over there." Naomi refused to stop. "They want YOU---heard them say it."
"Janeway to Voyager." The Captain hit her comm. badge. "Janeway to Voyager." Still no response. Kathryn signaled Neelix and he tried his badge--no answer.
They ran for cover in the caves. As they reached the opening Kathryn could see figures topping the hill. They went as far in as they could and tried to be quiet, searching for a passage, an escape route of even a decent hiding place.
"Naomi." Kathryn whispered. "What did they say? Tell me everything you heard." She hoped it was just a child's over active imagination, but that wasn't like Naomi.
"She's down here somewhere and we're going to find her." Naomi was shaking. "The big one said 'I'll get what I want from the lovely Captain Janeway' and he was laughing and telling the others to find you"
"I don't know anyone around here--are you sure he said my name?" Not that Kathryn didn't believe her---she just needed to be sure.
"Yes Captain. I'm very sure." Naomi looked up at Kathryn with fear in her eyes.
The away teams began to filter back and Chakotay was preparing to leave the bridge when the call came.
"Williams to the bridge."
"Bridge here what can we do for you Mr. Williams?" Chakotay replied.
"Commander the Captain's party has not returned to the transport site and I haven't been able to reach her, Sir." Williams was not happy to deliver this news.
"Acknowledged Mr. Williams keep looking and keep me informed. Chakotay out." The Commander took a deep breath--probably nothing--he tried to tell himself. "Mr. Kim try to raise the Captain."
“No answer, Sir. I'm picking up some sort of interference in that area." Ensign Kim couldn't look in the Commander's direction.
"What kind of interference, Mr. Kim?" Chakotay reminded himself that Kathryn was a competent Starfleet officer---she could handle whatever was going on, but the pit of his stomach said something different. "I don't know the origin, Sir---but it's blocking our comm. signal and the transporter as well."
"Confirmed--interference of unknown origin." Tuvok volunteered before Chakotay could even ask.
"Keep trying." Chakotay sat hopelessly on the bridge; nothing to do but wait.
The voices were coming close and the Captain signaled everyone to remain quiet. They hardly even breathed as they waited. Someone was yelling orders and she could hear footsteps--she tried to figure out how many men there were. She could make out three or four different voices but there were many more pounding feet out there. There was nothing to do but wait. Maybe after dark they could make their way out and contact Voyager. She reasoned that by now Voyager was aware that something was wrong. Had Chakotay come down to find her? She sat with her head against the wall cradling Naomi in her lap and waited. Neelix was close by, but she couldn't make out his face in the dark
The voices faded and she couldn't hear any footsteps outside, it was very dark in the cave and not much lighter outside. They waited in silence for what seemed a long time, but it was too dark to see the time and she didn't dare shine a light. After what must have been hours, she got up to take a look outside. It was very dark, no moon at all, she couldn't hear or see anyone
"I'm going outside to see if I can contact Voyager." She whispered. "Stay here I'll be right back." She checked the entrance again and started out into the darkness. When she reached a clearing she hailed. "Janeway to Voyager." She heard only static and tried again. "Janeway to Voyager." More static. Remembering the hills near by she slowly worked her way up seeking to avoid the interference. At the top of the hill she tried again "Janeway to Voyager." Static.
Then out of the darkness came voices. They were headed in her direction, discussing plans to search the caves by the water. She crouched low and worked her way back to the caves. They had to move before they were discovered. She crept into the cave.
"Neelix, Naomi. I heard them say they are going to search the caves, we need to move." She kept her voice low. "I wasn't able to contact Voyager-yet--- we'll try from out new location ---come on---quietly." She took Naomi's hand and led them out of the cave. "Stay close together and as low as you can--quiet."
They stayed low creeping along the edge of the caves until they came to a large clearing. Just on the other side was a large stand of trees. They could hear voices and see an occasional flash of light as search teams headed toward the caves they had just left.
"OK,
we have to make it to those trees. When I say so---stand up and run
as fast as you can, for the tree line." She looked around to be sure everyone
understood, the voices were coming closer. She strained to see, but
no one was visible. "OK." They stood and ran for the cover of the
trees. Reaching the other side they tumbled onto the ground breathing
hard; Neelix most of all. Kathryn crept to the edge of the trees
trying to see it they had been spotted. Nothing. She scouted
the area--no visitors--but no place to hide either. They had to move
on. They walked in silence through most of the night occasionally
trying to reach Voyager. They moved slowly and quietly. Neelix was
breathing hard and she was sure Naomi was very tired but no one complained.
*Samantha must be crazy with worry by now.* She thought *Hell I'm
a little crazy myself.* It was beginning to get light out and they
would be needing a place to hide. In the growing light Kathryn could
see the rise of hills?--mountains? Something with hopefully a place
to hide. They were tired and hungry, she
still
had the small pack which had emergency supplies in it, if they could find
a place to rest she would see what it contained.
"Captain-Captain." Neelix called softly. "Over there, a small animal went under that brush, maybe there's and opening." He pointed off to her right, just beyond the trees where the ground swelled.
"Stay here." She ordered and she crept forward to investigate. She poked around, he may be right - it went deeper than it looked. Kathryn cleared away a small amount of the brush and discovered what appeared to be an entrance. She shined her wrist light into it. It was long and dark, big enough for the three of them. She waved to Neelix and signaled him to bring Naomi forward.
Once inside, she tried to recover the entrance to conceal them. They went as far back as possible and she spread out one of the emergency blankets. They had some water and some ration bars, which she gave to Naomi and Neelix ushering them down to the blanket. "Here eat one of these and have a little water, then I want you two to get some sleep." She opened the other blanket and laid it across them. "Huddle together so you'll stay warm." She put on her best face and tried to smile for Naomi's sake.
"Captain, what about you? You need some rest." Neelix was tired but concerned.
"It's OK. I'll take first watch--after you rest I'll get some." She patted his arm "Naomi are you OK?----want some water?"
“I'm OK, Captain--yes please." She took the bottle and took a small sip. "Better save this." She handed it back.
"Get some sleep honey, we'll go home soon." Kathryn tried to sound confident.
"I know, Captain." Naomi snuggled down next to Neelix. "Don't worry Neelix, the Captain will take care of us. She always does."
If ever Kathryn was gonna break down and cry it would have been then. Hearing the absolute confidence this small person had in her and knowing at the same time, she had no way to keep her promise was almost too much to bare. She checked the entrance and came back to sit on the third blanket and eat her ration bar. Naomi was sound asleep with her head on Neelix and he in turn slept with his head against the wall. Together they looked so peaceful. Kathryn had never been a religious person, but she said a silent prayer that she could live up to their, unwavering faith in her.
After a while she got up to stretch, keep a look out and prevent herself from falling asleep. She walked quietly to the entrance, finding no sounds or signs of anyone she slipped outside. The sun was bright now and it blinded her for a minute. As she stretched she felt the warmth of the sun as it kissed her bare shoulders. Once more she tried to hail Voyager, without success. She went back inside. Kathryn checked over their meager supplies. Two small containers of water and five more ration bars were all the sustenance they had. The blankets and the wrist light, a tricorder, two hand phasers, a small emergency medical kit and an empty pack completed their list of supplies.
It had been twenty hours since the Captain's party had missed their beam up, the waiting was taking its toll on the entire crew. No search parties could be transported through the interference so every one waited and watched. Samantha Wildman had come several times to talk with Commander Chakotay, but both felt confident that Naomi was safe with the Captain; no matter where they were. They continued to scan the surface and try to analyze the interference, which continued to block all transmissions.
"Tuvok to Commander Chakotay."
"Chakotay here."
"Commander, I am in the astrometrics lab with Seven of Nine, we may have something I think you should see." Tuvok reported in that maddeningly even Vulcan tone.
"On my way." *Please have something.* Chakotay set off for the lab at just less than a run.
Arriving at Astrometrics, Chakotay found Seven and Tuvok bent over the console, studying something very carefully.
"What do you have?" Chakotay demanded.
“It appears that the interference we are experiencing is not native to this planet." Seven straightened to speak to the Commander.
"Not native? You mean someone is causing it?" Alarm sounding in his voice.
"Yes,
Commander, that is exactly what she means." Tuvok stared at him,
his eyes displaying more emotion than any Vulcan should.
"Double check your results and meet me in the ready room in ten minutes." Chakotay turned and tapped his comm. badge "Chakotay to all senior staff; report to the ready room in ten minutes."
Hours later, Neelix woke up and she traded places with him, slipping under the blanket with Naomi and quickly falling into a fretful sleep. It was past dark when she awoke to find Neelix telling Naomi a story about his travels. Kathryn listened for a few minutes before they noticed she was awake.
"Captain, you're awake." Naomi came to sit by her.
"Did I miss anything?" Kathryn tried to sound light.
"NO--Neelix tried to reach Voyager--no answer. That's all." Naomi was sounding worried.
"Any sign of them-Neelix?" She didn't need to say who--she didn't even know who.
“No, but I spotted some berries outside that I think we can eat. I'll go get them if you'd like."
Kathryn knew he wanted to help, he was probably hungry too; she was. "Are they close by?"
"Yes, I saw them through the doorway. They are just down the hill a little." He looked at her hopefully.
"OK, be careful--here put them in this." She handed him the empty pack. "Don't eat any till we check them with the tricorder." She cautioned him.
Neelix slipped out, loaded the pack with berries and slipped back in without incident. After Kathryn used the tricorder to determine the berries weren't harmful, they feasted on the sweet juicy fruits. The fruit was an excellent choice- it filled their stomachs, provided much needed energy and was juicy enough to take care of some of the thirst as well. Even so, they would need to find a source of water soon.
Kathryn took the empty water bottles and went out to scout water, while it was still dark. She worked her way to the river without running into anyone, she filled the bottles and headed back through the trees. She had to duck a few soldiers, but they were apparently just out walking and didn't see her. Outside the cave she tried to signal Voyager again, but still no response. No search parties had come down; this interference she was experiencing must be blocking the transporters as well.
Neelix went in search of food or at least more berries before morning light made him visible, while Kathryn took over occupying Naomi. Naomi understood they were in trouble, but had unwavering faith that the Captain would make everything all right in the end. She pretended it was a game to keep herself from becoming too frightened. After a while she drifted off to sleep in Kathryn's lap. Neelix had been gone a long time and Kathryn was beginning to worry. It was silly she told herself, Neelix was not a child, he had lived alone and traveled for many years--certainly he could take care of himself. Still--it had been a long time and she was getting worried. Kathryn drifted off to sleep and awoke to daylight and still no sign of Neelix. Now was the time to worry. She slid out from under Naomi and peered out the entrance. No Neelix. Naomi stirred and Kathryn went to her side.
"Naomi, Naomi honey, wake up." Kathryn gently shook her.
"Captain?" Naomi looked up trying to remember. Recognition registered in her eyes. "Captain, what's wrong?"
"I'm not sure; Neelix didn't come back." She waited for that to register. "I need to go and look for him. I want you to wait here. OK?" Naomi nodded. "I didn't want you to wake up alone and be frightened. I'll be back soon."
"Aye, Captain." It was a whisper "Captain---be careful."
Kathryn nodded, smiled at Naomi and ducked out the entrance. She had no way of knowing which way Neelix had gone, she scanned in all directions with her tricorder but nothing. Several times she changed directions before she got a reading. Well, someone was out there, now she had to hope it was Neelix. Cautiously, she headed in the direction of the life signs, carefully to stay as concealed as possible. When they were strong enough, she tried to refine them but still only knew it was humanoid, so she trudged on. Finally she came upon something slumped on the ground---Neelix. She lifted his head and could see a large gash in his forehead. She shook him trying to bring him around, when that didn't work she tried to drag him.--no use. She couldn't move him without his help. Kathryn renewed her efforts to rouse him, shaking, slapping and finally got a response. He wasn't very clear or very strong, but it was enough to help her get him on his feet. After what seemed like hours and every muscle in her body was screaming, they made their way up the final incline to the cave. She laid him on the blanket and began to clean his head wound. He would have a whopping headache when he woke up, but she thought he would be alright.
Since Seven had determined the interference to be artificial, the senior staff had been working on plans to disrupt it or break through it. Everyone had worked on plans, together and separately and were filing into the conference room to discuss their findings. It was 0700 hours and over 36 hours since the Captain's team failed to report. There had been no contact with anyone on the planet which meant they were still unsure what or whom they were dealing with or why, the mood in the room was sober and quiet as they waited for the Commander to start the meeting.
"Good morning." Chakotay was showing clear signs of stress and a total lack of sleep. "As you are all aware we have had no contact with anyone planetside--so we are still not sure what we're dealing with. Whatever or whoever is down there, we need to formulate a plant to bring that away team back. Suggestions? Seven any progress on the interference?"
"Commander,
I believe whoever is doing this is losing power; they seem to be unable
to maintain the interference in such a large scale for extended periods
of time." Seven keyed the padd and showed a model of the planet and
interference on the screen. "The field no longer covers the entire
planet but now covers just this area here." She outlined the area.
"So
you're saying the rest of the planet is clear; we could scan and /or land
an away team there?"
"Yes, Commander."
"Harry scan the rest of the planet for signs of the Captain or her team." Chakotay ordered. "I'm sure they are in the area still covered, but check anyway.
"Aye, Commander." Harry was already at the console keying in commands.
"Commander, if this thing is limited maybe we can go around it." Paris offered.
"How so, Tom?"
"Maybe the delta flyer could go to the edge and dip under it." Tom looked hopeful.
"We're not sure how powerful this field is, or how much space we might have to maneuver." Chakotay looked toward Seven, "Any idea if we could get under it?"
"I have been unable to calculate the depth as of yet."
"Work on it. Tuvok work with her." Chakotay ordered turning back to Tom. "If the flyer could go underneath, you should be able to beam them aboard."
"If I don't get my ass shot out of the sky." Tom half smiled. "That's where I need you B'Elanna, can you enhance my shields?"
"We can enhance the shields---let's see what Seven and Tuvok come up with for force--but we can definitely work on it."
"OK, let's do it. Dismissed."
Kathryn heard voices. She brought Naomi back by Neelix and crept toward the entrance to look outside. There were ten maybe more men with phaser rifles outside just below the hill. Kathryn watched in silence, as they poked and prodded searching the under brush and hillside. She could hear more footsteps headed in their direction and a loud voice giving orders. They were definitely looking for her, she heard her name several times. *Who are you?* She knew it was only a matter of time 'till they found her, maybe she should give up and they wouldn't find Naomi and Neelix.. It was a long shot---if they knew she was here than they probably knew who was with her. She moved back to where Naomi sat wide eyed.
"Who is it? Do they know we're here?" Naomi's little voice shook as she whispered.
"I don't know who they are or why they are looking for me." Kathryn took a deep breath. "They don't know we're here---yet. It won't be long before they find us." She looked at Naomi who only nodded her head and widened her eyes. "Naomi, do you trust me?"
"Yes, Captain." Her voice was a little shaky---she tried to sound brave.
"OK, then pay close attention." She took another breath to steady herself before continuing. "When they find us I'm going to try to talk to them. I might say some things that sound scary; don't worry about what I say. Whatever I say to them, I want you to remember that I'm going to get you home. I need you to be strong. I'll find a way to get you back to Voyager, no matter what happens--trust me." She took Naomi's shoulders in her hands and looked into her eyes. "Do you understand me---do you believe me, Naomi?"
"I understand, I'm strong." Naomi took a deep breath, just as she'd seen the Captain do, and tried not to cry. "I'll do just what you tell me to. I trust you." She reached up and put her arms around Kathryn. "I love you, Captain."
"I love you too, Naomi." Kathryn breathed deeply to prevent the tears from forming in her own eyes, as she hugged the child.
Nothing to do but sit and wait to be discovered. Kathryn picked up and armed both phasers as she racked her brain for a plan. She didn't have much time to think before a light flashed through the opening and voices rang out.
"Be brave little one. Remember, trust me." She squeezed Naomi's hand.
"Captain Janeway." A loud male voice called out.
Kathryn gave Naomi one last smile and walked to the entrance. From just inside the doorway she spoke. "Who are you and how do you know me?"
“Forgive me for being so rude-my lady---My name is Valime, my people live on a planet which is some distance from here. We call out home Kamar." She could see him smile-an evil smile-and give, a mock, bow in her direction. "And I know you by reputation. Everyone in this sector knows of the Lady Captain of the Starship Voyager."
"What do you want with me, Valime?" Hiding in a cave yelling to a greenish alien-even a greenish humanoid alien-- was not her idea of a perfect first contact.
"You have many things I might want. I think we need to discuss it PERSONALLY."
She didn't like the way he said that or the smirk on his face. "I will need to contact my ship; is it you blocking my transmissions?"
"Very good my dear Kathryn, I was told you were very cleaver. You see, I know of your magical transport devise, therefore I can not allow you contact with your Voyager." He shifted. "Come out my lovely and speak with me. I am anxious to see for myself if you are as beautiful as your reputation says."
"We will discuss this from here, until you allow me to contact Voyager." She gave him her best command voice-hoping--*Hoping for what?--that after going to all this trouble he's gonna let you go--not a chance.*
"Kathryn, please do not make me use force. I know you are brave, but what of the child and the little yellow man? Are they as brave, also?"
She turned to look at Naomi, who was busy with Neelix. He had woken up and she could hear Naomi explaining to him what was happening in low whispers. She returned her attention to the man outside. "Valime, just tell me what it is you are after and let's get on with it." She surveyed the area none of the men had moved any closer and she could still see Valime, but she didn't know how many there were. As she scanned, she noticed Valime make just the slightest move with his head and she stepped back and braced herself. Suddenly, someone jumped in front of her and she blasted him with her phaser. He fell backwards and rolled down the hill, a second man stood in front of her. Again she shot and he too fell rolling down to lay beneath Valime's feet.
"Very quick--nice shooting, Captain." Valime laughed. "I see we are going to do this the hard way."
"We don't have to. Just tell me what it is you want and I'll contact my ship." Kathryn hedged one more time.
"I have explained this my dear, Captain. I grow weary of this game." He shook his head. "Come out or we will come in. I have many men, you can not fight all of us. When I have you with me, we will contact your ship and they will give me what I want."
"You will not take us." Kathryn desperately tried another tactic. "You see that I have weapons, I can not beat you all, I know but---Dead Hostages are of no use to you." She glanced at Naomi and Neelix but they held steady.
"I know much about the brave Captain of Voyager. I have been told of your strength, I believe you capable of fighting me to the death---but I do not think you will harm the child and the yellow man." He seemed to think on it. "I will call your bluff."
"Do you trust your information? Did they ever tell you that I would bluff. That I have ever NOT backed up my word?" She was fighting desperately to control her fear, she couldn't afford to lose this one. "They are members of my crew, they understand the risks and they know their duty."
"What you say is so. I have heard the great and lovely Captain Kathryn Janeway is true to her word---and I would like the opportunity to enjoy your company--so --how do you suggest we proceed from here?" He had all the time in the world to wait her out, but he was tired of this game.
"Let Naomi and Neelix go back to Voyager." She saw the startled look on his face, she rushed on. "Let them go and I will lay down my weapons and come out."
"I could just wait here--we have food and water--you must come out sometime."
"We will not be taken alive--dead we are of no use to you." She mustered all the authority she could and demanded. "Let them go."
"If I do this, you will surrender your weapons? Why should I believe you?"
"I have given you my word. When they are safe on board Voyager, I will hand over my weapons-- I will not harm myself---you will have your bargaining tool." She took a breath eyeing him. She could almost see him thinking - she pushed on . "You know my reputation---or so you say---then, You know I will keep my word."
"How do you know I will not trick you?" He was smiling again.
"You will trust me and I will have to trust you." She motioned for Naomi and Neelix to join her.
"I will think on this." He stood still and considered her offer.
"Captain, I can't leave you." Naomi whispered as she tried to bring Neelix forward. He was slow and confused, Kathryn wasn't sure he knew what was happening, but at least he was on his feet.
"Naomi, you must take Neelix back to Voyager, he needs the doctor. You..."
"I will do this, Captain. Send them out." His yelling interrupted her.
“First Valime, have all your men back off to a safe distance. You stay right where you are. I may have to trust you --but I'm no fool, I will not send them into a trap." She watched as the men moved down the hill. "Now turn off what ever is interfering with our communications." She waited while he barked some orders.
"It is so --your ship can hear you if you come outside."
"OK----don't
move. I'll will send them out and once they area safe I will come
out." She turned slightly back to Naomi not letting Valime out of
her sight. "Naomi, you must take Neelix back to the ship." The girl
was frightened and looked about to protest. "Naomi, that's an order."
"Aye,
Captain." Tears were forming in her eyes, she gave Kathryn a quick
hug, before helping Neelix out into the sunshine. "Wildman to Voyager."
Naomi hit her comm badge."
"Voyager here Naomi." A very surprised Chakotay responded.
"Commander two to beam up. Beam us directly to sickbay." Naomi looked to Kathryn just as she began to shimmer in the glow of the transporter. "I love you, Captain."
*I love you too my brave little assistant* Kathryn watched as the glow faded and they were gone.
"Mr. Kim, do you have them?" He was already standing behind ops.
"Aye, Commander, they are in sick bay." Harry looked up. "I'm not sure who came up with her."
"Acknowledged, Mr. Kim." It was almost a whisper. "Tuvok, you have the bridge I'll be in sick bay, if you need me." Chakotay headed to the lift slapping his comm badge. "Chakotay to Ensign Wildman"
"Wildman, here Sir."
"Sam, Naomi is back, she's OK. Meet me in sick bay." He didn't know for sure but she sounded fine. Now he needed to know who she brought back.
"On my way. Wildman out."
Kathryn walked into the sunshine. She put her phasers on the ground and was immediately grabbed by two large green men. She stood as straight as possible and looked directly into the eyes of their leader, Valime. He smiled as he walked toward her. She could feel his eyes rake over her body and the sadistic smile on his face made her stomach knot.
Chakotay and Sam Wildman reached sickbay at almost the same time. As they went through the door, Naomi ran into her mother's arms. Chakotay focused on the biobed the doctor was working over. He stepped up cautiously; it was Neelix. He had known it would be, but still something in him had prayed her would find Kathryn. His heart sank. That meant Kathryn was still on the planet. He told the doctor to report on Neelix's condition as soon as he knew something and walked back to Naomi. He watched silently for only a minute. He needed to speak with her, she was the only one who could tell him what he needed to know. As it turned out, he didn't have to interrupt, Naomi came to him.
"Commander, I didn't want to leave her." She tried to hold back the tears. "She ordered me to."
"It's OK, Naomi. You did just what you should have." He smiled at Naomi, she had been through enough, but he still needed her help and then he looked to Sam. "I need to speak with her, Sam."
"I understand, Commander."
"Have the doctor check her out and meet me in the ready room. I'll want Tuvok there also." He looked down again, "Naomi, will it be alright to speak with me and Tuvok together?"
"Yes, Commander---but." She stood as tall as possible. "But --maybe all the senior staff should be there---they need to know, so they can help you get her back."
"Are you sure, Naomi?" He didn't want to make this any harder for her.
“Yes, Commander ---I'm sure. Can I check on Neelix now?"
"Sure honey, I'll see you upstairs." He turned to Sam. "I'll assemble the staff, bring her up when she's ready,"
"Aye, Sir"
"And Sam, stay with her. I'll get someone to cover your shift."
"Thanks, Chakotay."
The
first thing Valime had done was remove Kathryn's comm. badge. She
had lost her comm. badge to an enemy before, but usually they just ripped
it off and were done with it. Valime took great pains to slip his
hand inside her dress as he carefully remove the badge, lingering a little
longer than necessary on the soft skin above her breast. Kathryn
was not looking forward to her stay here.
