![]() The most important thing to know about the tools of the Craft is that it's not the tool that holds the power or magick. The energy or power to accomplish the given goal is inside of each one of us. The tool is simply a way for us to focus and concentrate that energy in order to send it to its task. Below is a list of some of the most common tools and a description of what it is used for.

The athame is a double-edged knife type of tool, usually with a black handle. This tool is used for channeling energy, inscribing runes & other magickal symbols on candles and other items, and symbolizes either Air or Fire. | ||

The besom is also known as the "witch's broom". It is NOT used for flying. The besom is used for symbolic cleansing of the ritual area. | ||

The Book of Shadows (commonly a Disk/ette of Shadows in this age) is a place where a witch or coven keeps a record of spells, information on tools, rituals, sabbats and esbats, correspondences, recipes, dream journals, etc, along with beliefs, traditions, guidelines, etc, of the coven or tradition. | ||

The cauldron is traditionally a black cast iron pot. It is used either as a symbol of the Goddess or for cooking during ritual feasts, and burning herbs during various rituals. Many witches will have various sizes of cauldrons to be used for different purposes. | ||

The chalice is a cup used to hold wine to be shared in the circle during ritual. It is a representation of the Goddess' womb and the element of Water. | ||

The pentacle is a symbol of the element of Earth. It is often made of wood, ceramic, or some type of metal to be placed on the altar during ritual. The points represent Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Spirit. | ||

The wand is made of any of various materials, normally something from nature such as wood. It is used to attract or repel energy during ritual, and is a symbol of either Fire or Air. | ||

The altar is any flat surface used primarily for holding ritual tools. | ||

The bell is used to invoke the elementals and to distinguish the change between various parts of a ritual. | ||

The boline is a knife, commonly with a curved blade and a white handle, which is used to cut materials for ritual and magickal use. | ||

Candles can be used in magickal workings, often with inscriptions and/or oils added to them. | ||

Incense is burned in ritual as a symbol of Fire or Air. | ||
