Making a Dreamcatcher

Dreamcatcher Hoop

The first thing you need to make a dreamcatcher is a metal or hard plastic hoop like the one on the right, a slightly larger size for the first time out.  To make the webbing, you can use either the traditional rawhide thong, or wool, cord, or embroidery thread.  For decoration, you can use beads, stones or shells, or a combination of all three or none at all, and at least one feather for the center.  Tradition has it that the good dreams slide down the feather to the dreamer.

Looping the thread

If you want, you can wrap the hoop before doing the webbing, but it's not necessary to do so.  Plan out how many times the cord will attach to the ring (tradition says eight), and mark in some small way where the loops will go.  To start the web, tie a knot on the ring, that is the top of your dreamcatcher.  Take the cord and, going clockwise, procede to the first mark where you will go over the front of the ring and around the base of the cord, pulling it taut, and to the next mark.

Keep going around until you get near the top, then you will loop the cord onto the first loop as near to the center as possible, and then onto the second loop, and the third, and continue in this pattern until the hole in the center is as small or large as you want it to be.  Tie off; attach your feather and there you have it, your very own dreamcatcher.  Hang it over your bed and catch some pleasant dreams.
