Whereas by a by-law, rule and order, made, ordained,
and constituted by the Trinity House of Quebec, and
afterwards, to wit: on the first day of May, 1811,
sanctioned by His Excellency the Governor in Chief, it
was ordered, that each and every pilot for and below the
harbour of Quebec, should, on or before the first day of September,
then next ensuing, paint on each side of the sails, and on the bow
and stern, of his boat, his distinguishing number in figures.
And
whereas a list of the said pilots is now prepared, according to
their seniority, taken from the record of their first branch, it is
ordered, at this early period, that no excuse may be hereafter
offered for disobedience, that each and every pilot, for and below
the harbour of Quebec, shall apply to the registrar of the Trinity
House for his respective number, on or before the first day of May
next, who will deliver him the same, with directions for printing
it on his boat and sails agreeable to law; to which directions,
each and every pilot is strictly to conform.
And all such pilots
are certified, that wilful neglect, or evasion, thereof, will be
punished, as circumstances may require, to the extent of dismissal
from office.
Such pilots as received numbers last year are desired
to return the same, and conform to this order, that no mistake as
to their true number may arise, under the penalty for disobedience
imposed by law.
