Somes Island Internment Camp for 'enemy aliens'
Remains of Anti-Aircraft batteries from WWII, Somes Island The WWII internees, including George Dibbern, were removed to a new purpose-built internment camp at Pahiatua while these batteries were active. However, they later came back to the desolate and wind-swept island camp when Polish refugee children were given the Pahiatua camp in the latter stage of the war.
