Sohma Hatsuharu

Sohma Hatsuharu is the Ox in the Chinese Zodiac. In the legend, it is said that the rat "used" the ox in order to sneak into the banquet. As a result, many came to the conclusion that the ox was stupid and dumb, and this resulted in Haru constantly being made fun of by the adults. This led to him becoming very angry and short-tempered, and that was when his Black personality was born.

Haru is usually a very calm person, and he's unusually mature and insightful for his age. But when he gets pissed off [courtesy of some really annoying people], he turns into a completely different person, very irrational and violent. His parents enrolled him in martial arts lessons to vent his anger, which kind of worked, in a way.. He tries picking fights with Kyou every once in a while, but somehow I think that he knows he'll lose. He's a pretty good sport about it, though.. very calm, an "I-don't-care" kind of a guy.

His "first love" is Yuki, and this, of course, sparked great interest and controversy among the fans. However, as the series progressed, it becomes evident that Haru doesn't really *love* Yuki in a romantic way. In one chapter, he even remarked to Yuki, "Maybe we were sisters in a past life..." Although, it has to be said that he does flirt with Yuki, typically when he's Black. Even so, I personally don't believe that it really means anything. Perhaps it was just Takaya-sensei's way of sticking some comic relief in there. Perhaps Haru DID have some kind of a crush on Yuki at one point or another. I honestly don't think that he ever had feelings for him in a romantic way, but Haru's pretty complex. We'll never know.

As has been stated, Haru is very thoughtful and insightful. He knows, for the most part, what to say and when to say it. He was the one who asked Shigure to take Yuki out of the Main House after Akito's harsh abusement of Yuki. Despite the way he looks - y'know, pierced ears; tattoo; a punk-rocker kind of a look - he's really very kind, although you wouldn't want to get in his way when his Black personality comes out.

Sohma Isuzu ["Rin"]

Sohma Rin is the Horse, and in the beginning, she comes off as a mysterious, tough, almost *cold* kind of a girl. She definitely carries this "Don't-mess-with-me" attitude, and as a result, very few people have really been able to get close to her.

As a child, she was extremely happy. Her parents loved her and they were just really, really happy together. One day, she just asked them, "Why are you always so happy?" And her parents just snapped. Apparently, they'd only put up this false pretense of being "happy" for Rin, and then they just couldn't do it anymore. The happy facade was over, and it was replaced with hatred. It's kind of implied that she was mistreated and abused physically and violently, but it's slight.

There's a flashback where a younger Haru finds a younger Rin collapsed on the street. He calls Kazuma, and she is then taken to the hospital. The doctor says something about "her weakened state" and "her situation"... so, interpret it however you feel, I guess. Her mother made a short appearance during this scene, basically disowning Rin and telling her never to come back. Haru blew up at her mother, demanding that she apologize to Rin, and the scene ends with Rin crying helplessly on her hospital bed, thanking Haru.

Rin doesn't especially like Tohru at first, believing that she's an outsider and that she doesn't really belong in the Sohma's business. But it's apparent that she actually does warm up to Tohru [as ALL the Jyuunishi do, really. ^^] and there's a sweet scene where Tohru brings her jelly in the hospital, since it's the only food Rin doesn't hate. She also finally breaks down emotionally in front of her, the first time we've seen since she did so in front of Haru.

Rin seems to have a special relationship with Shigure. At first, it's a little suggestive... Rin, determined to break the curse of the Jyuunishi, believes that Shigure knows the secret since he's on Akito's good side. She even offers Shigure her body, as long as he tells her the secret to lifting the curse. In the end, Shigure reveals nothing, but Rin doesn't give up, making occasional visits to him.

It's true that at first glance, Rin seems like nothing but a cold character who's just pissed off at the world in general. But as her story unfolds, we find that there's more to her than meets the eye.

Their Relationship

Haru was there for Rin was she needed him the most. After Rin was released from the hospital, she was sent to live with Kagura and her parents. Even though she was finally away from her abusive parents, she still was unable to find some sort of semblance of happiness. That was when Haru appeared, knocking at her window, asking her to come with him for a walk.

Rin [voiceover]: He would take me to places... we'd talk about trifle things. Haru had always been there for me, and he'd come visit me when I was sick. The memories of my time with Haru were happy. When I was with Haru, there was no pain."

[There's an adorable scene of Haru and Rin sitting together with Haru feeding her oden, which is - yes, I looked it up! XD - fish and vegetables simmered in stock. This cold-season favorite is often served at street stands. A variety of ingredients such as fish paste cakes, tofu and daikon radish are boiled in fish or chicken broth and eaten with mustard. So, yes, it's definitely very cute.. heehee.]

As time went by and the two of them saw more of each other, the inevitable happened, as it always does: They fell in love. Haru made the first move.. it's actually pretty amusing. Haru, in his cute, but blunt little way, basically says, "Rin, let's kiss." [lol..] and Rin is skeptical, and understandably afraid at first.. [she's afraid that her desire and love for him will "crush" him] but Haru is relentless, and she gives in to the kiss, which leads into more.

Eventually, Akito finds out, and confronts Rin about it, asking her who it was that talked the other into it, as well as reminding Rin about the incident with Hatori's eye. Rin, frightened for Haru's safety, lies and tells Akito that she was the one who convinced Haru to start a relationship. Akito, with a sadistic smirk, slaps Rin across the face so hard that blood splatters across the floor.

Akito: You aren't needed.

And as Rin hears those words, she also hears a fleeting reminder of her mother's parting words, "We don't need you."

And Akito pushes her out the window. All the while, she's thinking of how Haru had brought her happiness and that it was enough. From this point on, she breaks up with Haru so that he won't get hurt the way she did.

Is this the end? Will they ever get their happy ending?

Find out soon... when I next update. XD Ahh, no, you can find a more detailed description *AND MORE* under the Manga Summaries subsection under the Info section. Boy, what a mouthful.
