Mythic Surrealism

 

In the heart of Europe, Belgium offers to any artist, whatever his style, a very diversified cultural background. The art of FRED BOURLARD is perfectly integrated in this context . No sooner did he begin his career – as a very young painter – or he started to take interest in all the techniques his peers had or were investigating : from still life to tag. Undoubtedly his œuvre can be associated to the different European surrealist movements because of large parts rely on automatic painting, imagination and subconsciousness. Taking the opposite side of classicism, BOURLARD makes no concession to spatiality which appears only through the juxtaposition of colours, materials and abstract graphic structures. Thus the style gains in power, becomes mythic and timeless. Other paintings are "stereographic", magic. Then, the Gods of the Pantheon, so often figured, become our hosts ...
