My latest book, More Bedtime Magic, is again published by Rainbow Press - in October 2002. 112 pages in length, it has 11 stories. Titles include Sylvodious Stinkysoul's Wicked Spell, Gerry the Snowman and The Jewels at the Bottom of the Sea. The wonderful illustrations, by Gemma Best, are in full colour. It is intended for 6-11-yr-olds.
Here is the opening paragraph of Sylvodious Stinkysoul's Wicked Spell.
There once lived a wicked wizard named Sylvodious Stinkysoul. (Please note that his surname was Stinkysoul, not Stinkysoles. It was his soul that stank, not the soles of his feet.) Now, Sylvodious Stinkysoul was even wickeder than most wicked wizards. You see, he made it seem as if his spells were wonderful tricks to begin with so that it was even more horrible when his misfortunate victims at last found out how nasty they really were.
This is an extract from further on in the story
With great care, David took something from his pyjama-pocket and handed it to Hugh. It looked like a tiny strip of white material sprinkled with flecks of gold that sparkled when the light caught them.. Only it felt far softer than anything he’d ever touched before. Indeed, it seemed so delicate that he was almost afraid to touch it at all. "What is it?"
David smiled even though it was a serious sort of a smile. "It’s the tip of an angel’s wing."
Extract from Gerry the Snowman.
"Let me introduce myself," she went on, crouching down so that their faces were close together, her small red eyes glaring wildly into his, "I’m Eucaria Grundell, the Wicked Witch of Wetterly Woods. I’m going to cast an evil spell on you, little boy, and when I do, you’ll suddenly be a snowman standing in your own back garden. When the snow melts, you’ll vanish into nothingness, to come back to life again whenever it snows and some little boy or girl builds a snowman. The only way you can be released from the spell is for a child to hold some snow in his hands and call out the words, "Snowman, snowman, be no more. Once again be Gerry Moore."
Extract from The Frog who Wanted to Sing
However there was one creature who was not so fond of Mr Lark. This was Mr Frog. While Mr Lark had been given one of the loveliest voices of all living creatures, he himself could only croak. This made him very jealous. For all of his life he had longed to be able to sing.
One day, when Mr Frog heard Mr Lark singing, he felt very angry indeed. He wished that he would stop for the sound of the lovely voice almost drove him mad. A wicked plan came into Mr Frog’s head. He called his son Billy over to him.
"Billy," he said, "I want you to do something for me. You must jump into Mr Larks’ mouth and stay in his throat. It is a well known fact that one can’t sing with a frog in one’s throat."
