"Mode-Locked Vertical-External-Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers"

I received my BSc (Hons) in Physics from the University of Southampton in 2002. I then joined Prof. Anne Tropper's group at the University of Southampton in the School of Physics and Astronomy where I completed my PhD in the field of Semiconductor Vertical External Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VECSELs). You can view my PhD thesis here. Following this, I remained at Southampton as a Research Assistant in the VECSEL group, working as part of the Terasec consortium developing VECSELs for THz generation.
In April 2006, I moved to the Institute of Photonics at the University of Strathclyde, where I am currently working in the Semiconductor Optoelectronic Devices team with Prof. Martin Dawson and Dr Jennifer Hastie. My work concentrates on frequency doubling and mixing of Red VECSELs into the deep UV for Biophotonics applications.

I am a keen science communicator and participator in science outreach programmes. I became a fellow of the Rank Prize Funds optoelectronics College in November 2007, following my contributions to a pilot scheme developing Optoelectronics experiments for schools in Scotland to employ in the new Curriculum for Excellence. I currently volunteer as a Science and Engineering Ambassador (SEA) for SETPOINT Scotland, supporting science in local schools, and acting as a role model. I was invited to give a talk about my Outreach experiences and inspire staff and students attending the University of Strathclyde ‘Communicating Science’ course (CM100) held in October 2007. In addition, I am currently co-planning a cross-disciplinary proposal for an event for National Science week 2008.
My outreach activities in Southampton included a post as a student organiser for the University's EPSRC-funded 'Science with Coffee and Hobnobs' scheme and coordinator of the University OSA Student Chapter's Lightwave Roadshow for the 2003/2004 academic year. I was a committee member of the South Central Branch of the Institute of Physics in 2004/2005, a role in which I initiated a series of IoP public lectures at the University of Southampton.
(For more information, visit my Outreach pages.)

I am currently chair of the Institute of Photonics Entertainment committee, and an associate member of the Scottish Student Chapter of the OSA (AASCOSA). At Southampton, as a member of the steering committee for Theano, Southampton University's 'women in science and engineering' group, I was involved in the active encouragement and support of women in my field. I was also the postgraduate representative for Physoc, Southampton University's Physics society, sat on the School Board, and was a warden in University halls of residence.
