The Foamy Express Ryeders began as three friends getting together to celebrate a "Big Brew" event--this is an annual event sponsored by the American Homebrewers Association where one or two recipes are brewed by home brewers across the nation all on the same day. At noon Mountain Time, home brewers everywhere raise a toast to the hobby.

One thing led to another, and several people who had an opportunity to try some home brew asked about lessons. Under the sponsorship of Home Brew Supply, a brewing supply shop with a full kitchen and three-stage brewing system, the three friends began offering free classes in brewing from extracts to full mash, from beer to wine to mead.

Before long, the number of people attending classes and the cost of brewing became significant enough that the friends decided to formalize their "club". The Foamy Express Ryeders (an allusion to the Pony Express, which started in St. Joseph) became a club in late 2000. In Spring of 2001, they adopted a charter and sponsored their first AHA-sanctioned home brewing competition--the Quad-States Brewers Challenge. It was during the period leading up to this competition that the Belt Brewing Company, a craft brew pub in St. Joseph, joined in sponsoring the club.

Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.
