Novellas influenced European development of short stories and novels. The novella, based on humorous, political or romantic local events originated in Italy during the Middle Ages. Individual stories were usually gathered into collections. Chaucer introduced the novella to England with The Canterbury Tales. Shakespeare and other Elizabethan playwrights used Italian novellas for plot ideas.
