Obituary of Elizabeth Ann HOBBS FOSTER, Hardin County, Illinois Copyright 1999 Denise Kneifel Name of Deceased: Elizabeth Ann HOBBS FOSTER Name of Newspaper: Hardin County Independent Date of Newspaper: 1 February 1923 Obituary: Elizabeth Ann Hobbs Foster was born in Cape Girardeau Co. Mo. on February 15, 1835. She died in Carmi, IL. 21 Jan. 1923 at the age of 87 years 11 months and 6 days. Her mother died when she was 7 weeks old. An aunt, Anna Hobbs, wife of Isaac Hobbs, went to Mo. on horseback and carried her to Hardin County, where they reared her to womanhood as one of their own children. On Dec. 9, 1849, she was united in marriage to Horace Foster and to this union 12 children were born, six of whom preceded her to the eternal world. The remaining six are Thomas J of West Frankfort, IL., John W. of New Haven IL., I.S. of Zeigler, IL., Mrs M. L. Tyre of Cave-in-Rock, Mrs John Blagg of Carmi and Mrs. William Patton of Posey Co. Ind. Several grandchildren and great grandchildren are left to mourn their loss. The great part of her life was passed in Hardin County, where her friends were outnumbered only by her acquaintance. Seventeen years ago she went to Gallatin Co. where she resided until the demise of her husband and after that she spent her time with her children and mostly with Mrs. Blagg of Carmi; who did everything that loving hands could do to make her declining years pleasant, but finally the summons came on January 21, 1923 at 12:30 P.M. and her pure spirit took its flight from the temporal of clay to be wafted by angels bright to its eternal home around the great white throne. Mrs. Foster early in her wedded life heard the Gospel preached, surrendered all to the loving Christ, made the Good Confession and was baptized, united with the Christian Church of Rock Creek, IL., of which she led a consistent member until her demise. Words cannot add to the virtues of this good Christian life. She would say "I have stayed here long enough, I am ready to go." She was ever ready to help all in distress, so we can only consign her body to mother earth, whence it came, and command her spirit to the Eternal One who gave it. Funeral services were held at the residence of her daugher in Carmi, Ill. by Elder Henry Killo of the Christian Church, after which her body was conveyed to the Smith Cemetery in Emma Township on January 23, 1923, where she was laid to rest beside her husband to await the first and glorious resurrection, when he will see her come forth, clad in the habiliments of immateriality in that city not made by human hands. :Old age serene and bright And lovely as a Lapland night Shall lead thee to the grave."
