India (Patalia) - A medal for collecting medals Maharaja Bhupinder Singh’s collection of medals, rated as the world’s largest collection during his time, is truly mind-boggling now. He outdid himself in collecting medals in the same way he had outdone himself in so many fields. He headed the Chamber of Princes despite being the head of a small princely state. Maharaja Bhupinder Singh bought the entire medal collection of Spinks and Sons of London. Spinks had been making medals for governments and rulers since long and used to buy back medals of rare value from families who fell in troubled times. Buying the Spink Collection had a cascading effect with others who wanted to sell medals in their possession gravitating to the Maharaja. The Tribune India 29 Feb 04 |

Prem Chand's first foray into the tricky arena of peacekeeping came in 1962, when he was nominated by the Indian government to command U.N. forces in Congo to overcome the secession of Katanga province. Though he retired from the army as major general in 1967, the U.N. invited him to take command of the peacekeeping force in Cyprus two years later. He served as force commander till 1976, steering the mission through the political difficulties that led to the landing of Turkish troops on the island and its subsequent partition. In recognition of his achievements, the Indian government promoted him to lieutenant general. In 1980, Prem Chand was asked to serve the U.N. as special representative for Rhodesia, and later as commander of the force under the U.N. Transition Assistance Group that assisted the independence of Namibia. He successfully completed that assignment in 1990 when he retired from the U.N. Prem Chand, who died at the army's base hospital here, was born in 1916 in Muzzafargah in Multan, now in Pakistan. He was commissioned in the army in January 1937 from the Indian Military Academy. He joined the Dorsetshire Regiment and later the 10 Baluch Regiment, with which he served on the North West Frontier and during World War II. After India's independence, he transferred to the First Gorkha Rifles with which he remained for the rest of his army career. Over 20 years, he served in many capacities, including director of the National Cadet Corps, director of military intelligence and chief of staff of the army's eastern command. Missing Medals: Thieves walk off with I-Day decorations for uniformed personnel Crafted in 1972 to commemorate the silver jubilee of Indian Independence, 20,000 extra gold and silver-coated medals had been dumped at a civil defence storehouse on Cossipore Road in 1974. The packaging had decayed, the wooden trunk had cracked open in several places, and the medals had all blackened beyond redemption.Earlier this month, the 20,000 medals went missing. The entire matter was kept under wraps till the first arrest was carried out on Wednesday. It is now learnt that miscreants broke into the unguarded storehouse on February 9 and stole the white-metal medals. More than a week later, police arrested Rajkumar Prasad, a petty criminal operating in the Cossipore police station area, and recovered 2,627 of the stolen medals on Wednesday. A statewide hunt is on to track down the rest of the missing medals, worth several lakhs. After initial interrogation, Rajkumar named his two accomplices and the shops he had sold the medals to. Further raids, however, yielded little, as the culprits had fled. The police brass said a special initiative had been taken to retrieve the medals, as “a lot of sentimental value” was attached to them. The civil defence storehouse had been in bad shape for a long time. “The door remains ajar even when it is locked. The concrete ceiling has gaping holes in it. So, it was hardly surprising that the thieves could carry out the operation so easily,” said an officer, recounting how the medals had been made in Delhi and sent to various departments in all the states, to be distributed among uniformed personnel. 'Siachen troops faked encounter for bravery awards' The Army is contemplating serious judicial action in the wake of reports that troops posted at Siachen Glacier, the world's highest battlefield, may have faked encounter with the enemy to register false killings to claim bravery awards. "A court of inquiry has been carried out after the faked encounters have come to light and irregularities have been seen to have been committed," an army spokesman said today, reacting to media reports. The spokesman said, "misrepresentation seems to have been committed by the top battalion commanders" and judicial action would be taken. He did not elaborate claiming the matter was 'subjudiced'. The spokesman said action would be taken against whosoever was found guilty of "committing these grave irregularities". According to media reports, a young major of the Gorkha Rifles battalion, presently doing a tenure in the Glacier had given an army court of inquiry, specific details of fake killings made by his company. The alleged fraud was carried out between July and November 2003 in which some of the units took videos to show fake killings in an obvious move to claim awards and citations for imagined gallantry. sify.com 7 May 04
Army has ignored fake killings in the past The Army may have made attempts to salvage its badly tarnished image by taking disciplinary action against Major Surinder Singh, who had the courage to take on his seniors for the fake killings ordered by them, but the force really does not take seriously such excesses made by its officers in most insurgency-affected areas. while the Army authorities have chosen to take legal action against Major Surinder Singh, his Commanding Officer, Colonel K.D. Singh, who allegedly asked the officer to use his “imagination and initiative,” has been chosen for administrative action. He, along with Major Rohit Lama, have been blamed for administrative lapses. The Commanding Officer has denied making any such statement to his junior officer. However, senior officers point out that everyone posted in the trouble-torn state of Jammu and Kashmir wants to return with a gallantry award and the unit with a citation. And for that they even fake enemy killings or kill the innocent in the name of terrorists. The Tribune 8 May 04

Govt confirms 'fake' killings at Siachen In a major embarrassment for the army, the Defence Ministry has confirmed that soldiers did carry out fake killings in the Siachen glacier last year. The ministry admitted today that some soldiers at Siachen falsified evidence last year and claimed they had killed enemy soldiers in an encounter that never took place. This was first reported in the Hindustan Times this morning. A Court of Inquiry has blamed Major Surinder Singh for faking the killings and disciplinary action has been ordered against him, an army spokesperson said. ndtv.com 7 May 04 |
I believed Major’s report: Colonel Commanding Officer of Gorkha Battalion Col K.D. Singh told a military court that he had recommended gallantry award for Major Surinder Singh on the basis of the report submitted by the officer and was unaware that the Siachen Glacier encounters were fake. Col K.D. Singh, deposing before the court for the second day in the first-ever Army open trial, said: “I believed in good faith what Maj Singh (Surinder) was telling in his report. I could not have even dreamt that the report submitted by him was fake.” He said he recommended gallantry award for Maj Surinder Singh on the basis of the report of encounter submitted by the officer. tribuneindia.com 28 May 04
'He died the most glorious death' As Colonel Lalit Rai, Commanding Officer of 1/11 Gorkha Rifles, was narrating the gallantry act of Captain Manoj Kumar Pandey during the Kargil war to the young cadets of the National Defence Academy (NDA), Manoj's parents could not contain their sentiments. A portrait of Capt. Manoj, who was posthumously decorated with the Param Vir Chakra, the highest gallantry award, was unveiled by his parents in the Mike Squadron of the academy. The hall in the Squadron was filled with emotion as Rai, a Vir Chakra awardee, recounted the epic battle of Kargil and Capt. Manoj's will to fight and indomitable spirit in capturing the Khalubar Hills on the night of July 2-3, 1999 . "Even in their death, there was glory, because their rifles were pointing towards the enemy bunkers, which were empty by then and the frozen fingers squeezing the triggers. Capt. Manoj Pandey was one among those brave men," he said. Manoj's father Gopichand, in his short but heart-rending speech, said he was proud of his son and the NDA for producing such warriors. "His portrait in the Squadron should inspire and motivate the young cadets in the years to come," he said. Manoj, an alumni of the 90th course of the NDA, was commissioned into the 1/11 Gorkha Rifles in June 1997. In Operation Vijay, Capt. Manoj (then lieutenant) was the platoon commander during the advance to Khalubar in the Batalik sector. He led his men to recapture the Jubar Top, a feature of great operational importance. But his finest hour was in the capture of Khalubar in the early morning hours of July 3, 1999 . The battalion's progress on to its final objective was halted by a determined enemy firmly entrenched on commanding heights. Pandey stepped forward to take on the mission. Displaying great courage, he surged ahead of his troops and charged at the enemy with a full throated battle cry through a hail of bullets. Although wounded in the shoulder and leg, he pressed on his solitary charge with grim determination, till he captured from bunker to bunker. "Unmindful of his grievous wounds, he rushed from bunker to bunker, urging his men on. Critically bleeding, he collapsed at the final bunker and finally succumbed to his injuries, but not before the last of the enemy had been annihilated. His last words were, 'Na Chodnu' (Don't leave them)," Rai said. timesofindia.com 31 May 04

Allegations of fake killing hit BSF Even before the issue of Siachen fake killings could die down, a similar incident of alleged fake encounter by a BSF Commandant in Kashmir purportedly to claim gallantry medal has come to light. The allegation about the incident of September 8, 2003, has sent shock waves across the BSF establishment and its Director General Ajai Raj Sharma has ordered a Court of Inquiry (COI) against Commandant Narendra Singh after shunting him out of Jammu and Kashmir to Mizoram, BSF sources told PTI. As per the allegation by Constable Subhash Rathore of 42 Battalion headed by Singh, a Kashmiri youth had been gunned down by the Commandant and labelled as a Pakistani terrorist. Rathore alleged that after the 'fake encounter', Singh had tried to claim President's Gallantry Medal for it and even got a senior officer to recommend his name. Sharma also confirmed that the Commandant had tried to claim a medal but it was "rejected as the case could not stand the scrutiny." sify.com 18 Jul 04

Gallantry medal eludes NCB's former DG It's not just justice, but also honour, which is denied when it is delayed. The former director general of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), M K Singh, is learning this the hard way. An IPS officer of 1967 batch, Singh was awarded the Parakram Padak (gallantry medal) or the wound medal in 1993, after he was injured in a counter-insurgency operation on January 24, 1992 in Srinagar. Singh, who retired as the NCB chief on July 31 this year, is yet to receive the medal. Singh was the Inspector General (operations) with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Jammu and Kashmir, when he was wounded in the blast at the police headquarters near Lal Chowk in Srinagar. He lost an ear and received injuries all over his body, including in an eye, in the attack which left several others dead and injured. The next year the CRPF recommended the wound medal, which is now called Parakram Padak, for Singh. The proposal was then approved by the Home ministry and defence ministry. According to sources, when Singh recently contacted the CRPF and Home ministry officials, he was told that he medal was still being manufactured in the central government mint in Kolkata. Parakram Padak is a 35-mm circular silver medal with the national emblem in the centre. It is attached to a 32-mm long white ribbon with a red central stripe. Ironically, the officer received the ribbon several years ago and has since been wearing it without the medal on his uniform. timesofindia.indiatimes.com 3 Aug 04

India Colonel convicted of war fraud India's "Ketchup Colonel" has been convicted of smearing the red stuff on his "dead" friends, then taking their picture to claim a bravery medal. Army Col. H.S. Kohli was found guilty in a court martial in New Delhi of smearing ketchup on five civilians attached to his regiment, then getting them to play dead so he could get a snapshot. Kohli turned the picture over to his superiors and received a gallantry medal for the "kill." A senior Army official said Kohli will probably now be kicked out of the military. Another officer in his regiment still faces a court martial for his part in the stunt. washingtontimes.com 3 Sep 04
Saragarhi episode for Punjab history books The saga of bravery of 21 Sikh soldiers who died fighting against heavy odds while defending the Saragarhi post against an attack by nearly 10,000 Afridis and Pathans is one of the most daring and calculated feats of gallantry and devotion to duty in history. Stating this, Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi, Chief Parliamentary Secretary (Sports and Youth Affairs) to Punjab Government said an account of the bravery of the Saragarhi martyrs would be included in the history textbooks of schools in the state so that the younger generation can get motivation from the chivalrous deed of these Sikh soldiers. Mr Sodhi was here to preside over the ex-servicemen’s rally organised to pay homage to these gallant soldiers of the 36, Sikh Regiment who attained martyrdom while defending the Saragarhi post of Fort Lockhart in Afghanistan on September 12,1897. Each one of these 21 men were awarded the Indian Order of Merit (IOM) for their valour. onlypunjab.com 12 Sep 04

Ketchup colonel faked kills; fired The army colonel who faked his claim for a gallantry medal by splashing ketchup on civilians to make them look like militants killed in an encounter in the Northeast has been dismissed from service. "Colonel HS Kohli, who was commanding officer of an artillery regiment, has been found guilty of reporting an encounter which had not taken place." The complicity of a major, who was serving under Colonel Kohli has also been established. The two connived in claiming kills at Bada Nagadun near Silchar, Assam, in 2003 by presenting photographs of civilians splashed with ketchup. The civilians, who posed as dead militants had been employed by Kohli's unit. While Kohli, who gained notoriety as the 'Ketchup Colonel', has been dismissed, the major has been slapped with a five-year loss of service and a severe reprimand. After the scandal at Siachen, this is the second case of fake kills, which is tormenting the Army. While the Siachen court martial is in progress, Colonel Kohli has become the first Indian Army officer to be dismissed for fabricating an encounter with militants for winning glory and military medals for himself and his unit. The fraud was discovered when the claim for gallantry medals was being processed. A court martial followed. hinustantimes.com 19 Nov 04

Thieves walk off with I-Day decorations for uniformed personnel Crafted in 1972 to commemorate the silver jubilee of Indian Independence, 20,000 extra gold and silver-coated medals had been dumped at a civil defence storehouse on Cossipore Road in 1974. The packaging had decayed, the wooden trunk had cracked open in several places, and the medals had all blackened beyond redemption. Earlier this month, the 20,000 medals went missing. The entire matter was kept under wraps till the first arrest was carried out. Punjab govt hikes pension of gallantry awardees Punjab government announced a major hike in the pension of the gallantry awardees in recognition of their services to the nation. Announcing this, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh told reporters that the government had also ended the discrimination between pre-independence and post-independence awardees as the sacrifice can not be distinguished. The monthly annuity (pension) of Paramvir Chakra awardees has been hiked to Rs 10,000 from the present Rs 350. The awardees would also get other pension amount totaling Rs 2,500 making it Rs 12,500 per month. The pension of Ashok Chakra has been increased from Rs 325 to Rs 10,000, Mahavir Chakra from Rs 275 to Rs 7,500, Kirti Chakra from Rs 250 to Rs 7,500, Vir Chakra from Rs 200 to Rs3,500 and Shaurya Chakra from Rs 175 to rs 3,500. Singh said that the pension of the Sena, Nau Sena and Vayu Sena medal awardees, only if conferred for gallantry, has been increased to Rs 2,000 from Rs 100 while mention-in-despatch awardees would get Rs 1,000 from the present Rs 100. The pension of Victoria Cross and Military Cross awardees has been hiked to Rs 10,000 and Rs 7,500 from Rs 500 and Rs 100 per month respectively. zeenews.com 3 May 05
Decorated war heroes get a pittance Honorary Captain Umrao Singh is the only surviving Indian recipient of the Victoria Cross, perhaps the world's best known award for gallantry in the face of the enemy. Umrao Singh repeatedly beat off frenetic enemy attacks on an Indian Army gun position in Burma in World War II. Fending off the final assault, he struck down three of the enemy in hand-to-hand fighting, and later, when found wounded beside his artillery gun, there were 10 of the enemy lying dead around him. There are only 15 surviving Victoria Cross winners across the world. As a gesture of the nation's appreciation, Umrao Singh gets a princely allowance of Rs 80 a month from the Government of India. Naib Subedar Bana Singh ignored benumbing elements at a 22,000-ft-high battlefield in Siachen and no-holds-barred enemy firing to climb an icy precipice against all odds, dislodge a superior enemy and reclaim the post which is since named after him. His heroics in 1987 received recognition in the shape of the Param Vir Chakra (PVC), India's highest gallantry award in the face of the enemy. Now back to farming at Kadyal village, 3 km from the Line of Control in the RS Pora Sector of Jammu and Kashmir, Bana Singh receives a monthly allowance of Rs 1,500 in recognition of his PVC. Till 1996, his allowance was a paltry Rs 350. There are only four surviving Param Vir Chakra awardees. Don’t these brave men deserve a better expression of gratitude from a nation whose honour they have so heroically defended? Monetary reward, however, is not the foremost thing on Umrao Singh's mind. Now pushing 88, he is bitter at not being invited to any defence investiture ceremony or even to the president's reception on Republic Day, despite continuing to take part in the parade. Bana Singh says recognition of his deed is limited to cantonments. “I will ould be very proud if I got recognition by civilian authorities,” he says. “But there is none here. There is very poor awareness of high military decorations,” he adds. The problem, says Gen V.N. Sharma — a former army chief whose brother Major Somnath Sharma was the first recipient of the Param Vir Chakra — is that the Indian elite don’t relate to the military as they do in the West. “There is lack of a consciousness about what the army means to the country.” Most gallantry awardees agree their service to the nation can’t be measured against monetary value. “Izzat aur iqbal (honour and respect) is more important,” says Brigadier Sant Singh, who has been decorated with the Maha Vir Chakra twice. hindustantimes.com 2 May 05

Air Chief Marshal Arjan Singh Air Chief Marshal Arjan Singh, who was Chief of Air Staff of the Indian Air Force from 1964 to 1969, is the epitome of a military leader and it is in the great fitness of things, and truly a grand morale booster to the officers and men of the Indian Air Force that he was honoured with the rank of Marshal of the Indian Air Force (equivalent to the Army's Field Marshal), on the Republic Day of 2002. This is appropriate and timely even as the world's fourth largest Air force prepares for a major upgradation of its capabilities in the new millennium. Blind Major wins battle with books The story of Maj Gopal Mitra’s life is a rivetting tale of a champion who triumphed over terrible handicaps to take control of his destiny. When Mitra lost his sight in November 2000 after a landmine exploded in his face during a search-and-destroy operation in Kupwara, J&K, he could have sunk into anger and self-pity. Instead, he chose to bounce back from the devastating setback. The 34-year-old has set a record at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, by becoming the first blind student to top a post-graduate course — MA (Social Welfare). He has been offered a place at the prestigious London School of Economics for pursuing MSc in Development Management. Indian soldier killed in Congo An Indian soldier on a United Nations peace-enforcing mission in Congo was killed in a crossfire between the Congolese Army and a group of rebels. The 3 Mahar Regiment soldier was killed and three others injured near the border with Rwanda. The Indian peacekeeper's vehicle, which was following Congolese troops chasing the rebels, took hits and the soldier lost his life from a stray bullet fired by the rebels. The Indian Army has operated in Congo in much more trying circumstances under the U.N. flag in the early 1960s with Capt. Gurbachan Singh Salaria having been posthumously conferred the nation's highest award for gallantry during war. Capt. Salaria and his men had averted a tactical reversal for U.N. peacekeeping troops on December 5, 1961, by charging at a rebel formation killing 40 of them and destroying two armoured cars. hindu.com 15 Jun 05
88 years later, battalion honoured Gallantry awards are the ultimate badge of honour for any Army regiment or battalion. It’s a matter of the paltan’s izzat (battalion’s honour), as they say in Army parlance. But this particular medal has made its way to a battalion after a good 88 years. The battalion, 7th Light Cavalry (earlier called 28th Light Cavalry), is popping the bubbly these days after getting the medal, a Victoria Cross no less, even if it’s a replica of the original. The original Victoria Cross will, however, remain with the battalion which has had it all this time, the 2nd Lancers or Gardner’s Horse. This engrossing story begins during World War I in November 1917. Lance-Dafadar Govind Singh, who belonged to British Indian Army’s 28th Light Cavalry, was at that time attached to 2nd Lancers which was fighting on the western front in France, east of Pozieres. timesofindia.indiatimes.com 16 Jun 05

War heroes cheated out of land The exploits of soldiers such as Brig Kuldip Singh Chandpuri (pictured left), Brig Sukhdev Singh, Lance Naik Shangara Singh, Wing Commander H.S. Mangat, Lt. Colonel Ranbir Singh and Capt Reet M.P. Singh in the 1971 Indo-Pak war are legendary. They have something else also in common - they have all been cheated out of the land promised to them by the Punjab Government. It is often said that Major Chandpuri (left), as he was then, and 82 soldiers of the Punjab Regiment deployed on the border post of Longewala turned the tide against the Pakistani Army in the war by holding the post against a much larger and superior force. The battle of Longewala is now part of Indian military's chequered history. India loses its last Victoria Cross awardee He won the highest gallantry award during World War II, the Victoria Cross when he fought the Japanese along the Burma front. Earlier this week, Umrao Singh, India's last surviving VC died in Haryana. Umrao Singh may have fought someone else's battle during World War II, but by being awarded the Victoria Cross, he served as a constant reminder of the critical role of Indians in fighting international fascism in the most horrific war in history. Soldiers like Umrao were also a bridge between the old Indian Army under British rule and the army of independent India. Umrao may have fought for the British, but he retired in 1965 from the Indian Army and five years later was given the honorary rank of Captain. ndtv.com 27 Nov 05 |

Singh, 85, of Jhajjar in Rohtak, Haryana, won the Victoria Cross, the highest award for bravery under imperial India for beating off four Japanese attacks on his advanced battery position at Kaladhan valley in Burma on the night of December 15-16, 1944. He struck down three Japanese soldiers before being knocked out. Six hours later, on counter attack, Allied forces found Singh at the site of his gun, so severely wounded that he was hardly recognisable. Around him lay 10 dead Japanese soldiers. He was the last survivor among 40 Victoria Cross winners in the Indian Army known for their feats in the first and second World Wars. outlookindia.com 21 Nov 05 |
December 13 attack: Nation forgets its heroes The law has run its course, the culprits have been punished, yet four years down the line, the families of the heroes who foiled the terrorist attack on the cradle of Indian democracy are yet to receive the government's promised compensation. For the family of Matbar Singh Negi, a member of the Parliament security team, the promise of a petrol pump by the Centre and the Rs 400,000 by the Delhi government, is yet to be met. The government conferred the Ashok Chakra, the highest peace time gallantry award, on Negi, but still the compensation was forgotten, says his family. On December 13, as five gunmen entered the Parliament complex, Negi, despite suffering bullet injuries, closed an entry gate briefly stalling the progress of the terrorists. Negi succumbed to injuries, but not before all the terrorists were shot dead by the security personnel inside the complex. Four Delhi Police personnel - assistant sub-inspectors Nanak Chand and Rampal and head constables Om Prakash and Ghanshyam - attached to the Vice President's security lost their lives besides CRPF constable Kamlesh Kumari, Negi and his colleague Jagdish Prasad Yadav and CPWD gardener Desh Raj. news.webindia123.com 12 Dec 05
India to stage major Vijay Diwas celebration After a break of several years, India will celebrate Vijay Diwas, which commemorates armed forces personnel who died fighting for the nation, in a major way. Vijay Diwas or Victory Day is observed every Dec 16 as it was on this day in 1971 that the Indian military achieved a historic victory over Pakistani forces in the war that led to the creation of Bangladesh. It was also on this day that the largest military surrender after World War II - by over 90,000 Pakistani troops - took place when India's Lt. Gen. Jagjit Singh Aurora accepted the instrument of surrender from Lt. Gen. A.A.K. Niazi of the Pakistan Army at Dhaka. Aircraft like the MiG-21 and the Gnat, which saw their first operations in the 1971 war, will be put on display along with assorted ground attack weapons. A Gnat pilot, Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Sekhon was awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest award for gallantry, for the 1971 operations. newkerala.com 14 Dec 05

The retired officers said that despite being disabled while in the service of the country, the army authorities had chosen to shower apathy on them - even denying them their pension benefits. The officers, numbering about two dozen, said their protest was meant to highlight the plight of hundreds of soldiers who were fighting legal cases against the army to get their dues. newkerala.com 20 Dec 05

Sqn Ldr Sirigare Shivashankappa Chaitanya recieves gallantary VM (posthumously) Wing Commander Chaitanya ‘Chaithu’ as he was popularly known, has received the presidential award of Vayu Sena Medal Gallantry on the eve of Republic Day 2006 (Posthumously). Sqn Ldr Chaitany from Chitradurga, Karnatak was commissioned as a Technical officer on 27 May 1996. He completed his basic and advance mountaineering course f! rom HMI Darjeeling and was adjudged ‘best student’ in the Advance course. His love for mountains and mountaineering drew him irresistibly to the sport. He took part in every IAF mountaineering expedition since 2002 such as Deo Tibba, Manali, Shitidhar and Kamet and summitted all these peaks. He immersed himself in finding out everything about Everest till he became a walking encyclopedia on the mountain. He was involved in everything to do with the planning and organizing of the Everest expedition, be it equipment, communications, photography, route, sherpa support or Govt. approvals. No physical training or any activity could be done without Chaithu being at the forefront. On the mountain itself, he was the first to get up and wake all the others, help in making tea and get things going. Tougher more well informed and more energetic than anyone else on the expedition, it was ironic that Sqn Chaitanya succumbed to dangers of extreme mountaineering, a fact that ! hs drawn attention to in every discussion. Sqn Ldr Chaitanya reached the summit of his dreams on 30 May 2005. He lies in everlasting peace at 8150 meters in the lap of the mountain he so loved. pib.nic.in 25 Jan 06

Women show courage under fire The term 'combat warfare' is not exactly synonymous with women. But breaking stereotypes and marching along on an uncharted path is the world's first independent women's paramilitary combat battalion. After CRPF took charge of the internal security of the state, this Srinagar-based women's battallion has pulled up its socks to take on militants and given them a hard time. Rewarded four times for their gallantry - including an Ashok Chakra and Presdent's police medal - this women's CRPF battalion forms an important component in Kashmir's counter-insurgency grid. ibnlive.com 8 Mar 06

A Brazen cover-up that rewrote Indian naval history Mistakes committed by naval officers, including the commanding officer (CO) of INS Khukri, led to the sinking of the warship and the death of 200 of its crew during the 1971 war with Pakistan, according to documents with DNA. The findings overturn official naval claims and published history on the sinking of the Khukri by Pakistani submarine PNS Hangor at the height of the 1971 Indo-Pak war. It also raises uncomfortable questions about numerous gallantry awards given out by the government to many involved in the incident. DNA’s investigation reveals that in their last moments some 250 officers and sailors of the Khukri were abandoned by INS Kirpan, an accompanying naval ship that should have carried out an immediate counterattack. dnaindia.com 16 Apr 06
Indian Army cautious on medals-for-kills scam The Indian Army reacted cautiously to a TV report that a medals-for-kills scam that rocked the force two years ago had been "approved" by senior officers. While not reacting directly to a CNN-IBN report, an army officer said that the review petition of one of the officers cashiered in the scam had been received and was being examined. Colonel H.S. Kohli had filed the petition after a general court martial (GCM) found him guilty of staging mock gun battles while commanding a battalion in Assam to show a high number of kills to improve his chances of winning a gallantry award. Kohli's name had emerged during the CGM of Major Surinder Singh, who was accused of acting similarly. Kohli was commanding the battalion at the time. Surinder Singh said Kohli had encouraged him to report the false kills. Kohli, during the trail, had named his immediate superiors - Brigadier Suresh Rao and Major General Ravinder Singh - as having egged him now. A GCM has now being ordered against Rao. timesofindia.indiatimes.com 14 Apr 06

Stop faking, says Army Chief No more faking. That's the latest order for the Indian Army from Army Chief General J J Singh. Stung by the embarrassing disclosures of top Army officers faking kills for military honours, Singh has cracked the whip on a system showing clear signs of decadence. J J Singh admitted that the peculiar evaluation system of determining military glory by the numer of kills, was driving its formations to a killing spree - real and even imagined. "This year, I intend to further restrict the award of unit citations to just the barest few who really stand out. So, I do not wish to have any race amongst units to try and achieve recognition," Singh said. ibnlive.com 21 Ap4 06 |

Army probing decorated captain’s death The Indian Army is probing the controversial death of a highly decorated young captain whose family maintained that he had not committed suicide, though the army has apparently made up its mind on the issue. “It is (Captain Sumit Kohli’s) family that says he did not commit suicide. We will investigate this in detail and if the allegation is true, we will take appropriate action,” army chief Gen. J J Singh told reporters here on the sidelines of a defence seminar. However, when asked why Kohli had been cremated sans the honours usually accorded to a soldier who dies on duty, Singh’s reply was clear that it was a case of suicide.Initially, it was said that Kohli, serving with the Rashtriya Rifles counterinsurgency force in Jammu and Kashmir, succumbed to injuries sustained during a terrorist ambush April 30. However, an army spokesman later announced that he had committed suicide by shooting himself with his service AK-47 rifle. Kohli had been awarded the Shaurya Chakra - the country’s third highest gallantry award - just four month earlier for action in the Kashmir Valley. “The inquest report is in. We are waiting for the forensic report. Like that, there are so many procedures. thepeninsulaqatar.com 25 May 06
Ketchup colonel's boss faces court martial The noose has just tightened around Brigadier Suresh Rao, boss of the now infamous "ketchup colonel" H S Kohli. The court martial against Brig Rao, for allegedly ordering his subordinates to fake militant kills to show good results has began. The case could even lead to action against other senior officers since staging "fake encounters" to garner gallantry awards, commendation cards or unit citations is not an unusual practice in Army. Col Kohli, dubbed "ketchup colonel" after he faked photos of "slain militants" by splashing tomato sauce on some bodies in Assam in August 2003, was sacked after a court martial in November 2004. timesofindia.inditimes.com 11 May 06
