JESSE H. WOLF - Generation 5 From Warren Wolf's notes, it is learned that Joseph Crunkleton one of the
pioneer mill men of North Arkansas built for Jesse Wolf the first sawmill in
that section of the state. It was run by water power instead of circle-saw
that is of later date. Jesse used a saw that worked perpendicularly and the
builder of the sawmill stated that it was one of the best paying sawmills
that he ever built. It is thought that Jesse Wolf also inherited his
father's ability with the blacksmith trade. Jessie Belle Green, (RN918) a
g/daughter of Jesse H. Wolf, has an anvil that he made. Jesse Wolf is thought to have taken possession (lived in) of the Wolf
house after the death of his father in 1863. No document has been traced to
his ownership of the house but a marriage certificate of Jesse's daughter,
Mary Arkansas Wolf (RN295), who married Ezekiel Newton Osborne states that
they were married on 4 Aug 1878 at the residence of Jesse H. Wolf. A
daughter of Mary Arkansas Wolf Osborne, Elizabeth Osborne Vickrey, always
said that her parents were married in what is commonly known to family
members as the Wolf House on that date. Jesse H. Wolf served in the Confederate States Army with the 14 Arkansas
Infantry as a Private in Company I. There is a paper listing the Jesse H.
Wolf estate in 1900 and witnessed by Frederick Talburt showing the heirs at
that time as Jane Wolf, Kansas Morton, J.P. Wolf, R.H. Wolf, Belle Wolf
Hargrave, Frances Reeves. From those names listed, knowing that Jesse's
first wife Nancy Jane Hargrave Wolf was deceased, it could be assumed that
he had already remarried and the Jane Wolf referred to was the second wife,
as he did marry Jane Kellough Luther, who was the widow of Calvin Luther. It
is known that Annie Morton and Mary Arkansas (Kansas or Kance) Osborne were
both living at that time; so it cannot be determined which of the two is not
accounted for as they have the given name of one and the married name of the
other listed together as one person when in fact there were really two. It
could, or could not, be assumed that all the other children not
listed in the document of estate were already deceased as several children
were NOT mentioned. In another version of contents, it lists both Kansas and
Annie but leavs out Emma Maud. The original document has not been
located. The saved records from the Court House fire have been
examined and the posting has not been located to this date, June 2005. In the Jesse H. Wolf Family Bible in the possession of
Ruby Wolf Lack's grandson ( I do NOT know which grandson - Ruby just told me
herself in 1978 that her grandson had the bible - no death dates were given for several of Jesse's
children; yet, his death date is listed as 1898. These children, not listed,
could have all been alive, in 1898 , but became deceased between that date
and 1900; or it could be that such death dates were just omitted.
Also, an obituary has finally been located in the Mountain Echo newspaper
dated August 1897 and found in the Arkansas Historical Commission microfilm
file. So the death entry was written by someone else at a later
time and the year of 1898 was wrong. Jesse H. Wolf departed this life with not much known about him. His
daughter Annie Lee Wolf Morton gave birth to a daughter 24 Jan 1896. Jesse
went to see his new grandchild and asked permission to name her. Permission
was granted and he named her Nancy, presumedly after her grandmother and his
first wife Nancy Jane Hargrave Wolf. This incident was related to me by Jane
Morton Head, an older sister to that baby. The child, Nancy Modera Morton
Flippin, was alive in Flippin, AR in 1978 but died in a Mountain Home, AR
rest home in the early 1980's. Subsequently Jane Morton Head and her husband
also both passed away in the late 1980's. Jane Head lived within a few miles
of her birth place near Norfork all of her life but she personally told me
that she knew nothing about her grandfather, Jesse H. Wolf. In Warren Wolf's
notes, he refers to Jesse's daughter Annie Lee as being at the home of her
Uncle Martin Jefferson Wolf when her mother Nancy Jane Hargrave Wolf died so
when the Jesse Wolf family broke up so to speak she lived with her Uncle for
several years. Elizabeth Osborne, a g/daughter of Jesse Wolf was baptized into the
Methodist Church at the Wolf House when she was a young girl living in
Baxter County and presumedly while her Grandfather, Jesse H. Wolf, was
living in or maintaining the Wolf House. Exactly where Jesse H. Wolf lived out his days is simply unknown. Mary
Elizabeth Blount, another g/daughter of Jesse H. Wolf remembers being told
that perhaps he died at the home of Mary Arkansas Wolf Osborne who was then
also living in Baxter County. No burial site has been established for either
Jesse H. Wolf or his first wife Nancy Jane Hargrave Wolf. There are area
cemeteries where many of the Hargraves and Talburts (Talbuts) were buried
but no positive site has been discovered in those or the known Wolf
cemeteries for the two. Jesse's second wife would have still been alive when
he died and since it is thought by some family members that she is buried on
the John Pierce Wolf home place cemetery near McPhearson; he also could be
buried there, perhaps. John Pierce Wolf was one of Jesse H. Wolf's sons and
he, John Pierce, had married Fannie Luther who was the daughter of Jane
Kellough Luther, Jesse's second wife. These facts give more than reasonable
doubt to the theory that the both of them would be buried in that family
plot. Catherine Jane Kellough had a son
Isaac Riley Kellough
who went by the name of Isaac Riley Luther after Catherine Jane married
Calvin Luther when his first wife died. There has always been
speculation that Isaac Riley Kellough Luther carried Wolf blood through
Jesse H. Wolf. No DNA test has been done to this point but in the Wolf
family it was well known that Isaac was Jesse's son by Catherine Jane, so
his line of descent is carried by this family data base.
