Derek & Roger's

CANADA TRIP, 1999

Derek Chinn and I spent two weeks in British Columbia before heading down to California for the rest of our holiday (see California 1999  for that)

After getting off the plane we headed up to Squamish. Here Derek is leading the 2nd pitch of "Centrefold" (5.10c or about 21 by our grades)

This is the 3rd, and final, pitch of "Centrefold". the "Chief" is in the background.

Squamish is the home of some classic multi-pitch trad' climbs. This one is called "Blazing Saddles" (5.10c, 22).

A little higher up.

This one is "Squamish Buttress". Derek has just finished the crux section (5.10c 21). We had started up a 5 pitch route lower down (5.10b 20) which made a 13 pitch day.

Mt Habrich had been given a bit of a rave in the guide book but involved some delicate access.

And a walk.

It all made for a fantastic day out. The climb included 5 long pitches of 5.10 (crux 5.10c 19).

One of me.

The camping is pretty good but not free anymore ($8 per site per night). In my previous visit in 1996 this was just a piece of forest beside a high voltage transmission line access road. Climbers had been using it for decades, with no serious degradation and no significant cost to the community. The bureaucratic powers however justified the imposition of these squares, filled with crushed aggregate, on "environmental" grounds.

In our quest to climb in the Bugaboos we travelled across BC. We saw a lot of pine tress but never go to the Bug's due to poxy weather forecasts. We had a good time along the way though. This is at Skaha; on a 5.11b (22).

Lake Louise is about as far east as we went.

The climbs here are steep enough to stay dry in the occassional showers we got. The is me on "Liquid Sky" (5.11c 23), probably the hardest route I flashed this trip.

After BC we flew down the USA for three weeks in California.
