The Dark Side of the American Dream
Hinckley has now been incarcerated at St. Elisabeth's Hospital for the
criminally insane, where other failed assassins, such as Richard Lawrence,
also came to reside, to live out their days in obscurity. Recently
Hinckley has been in the news for his efforts to obtain regular furlough
priviledges. Although today he and his parents maintain that he is
cured of his obsessions, his journey to whatever degree of mental
health he has currently attained
has been marked by a series of setbacks, such as collecting pictures
of Jodi Foster, stalking a female therapist, or writing to Charles Manson.
Since 1990, Hinckley has, according to doctors, made considerable progress
in his mental health treatment. In 1992 he was taken off psychiatric medications
and allowed to wander the hospital grounds unsupervised. One
element of stability in his life is his relationship with former patient
Leslie deVeau, who is now a social worker at St. Elizabeth's. In
1982, deVeau killed her 10 year old daughter and attempted unsuccessfully
to kill herself. Her left arm suffered such massive injuries that
it required amputation. Like Hinckley, deVeau was found not
guilty by reason of insanity. Unlike Hinckley, she was released
after spending four years at St. Elizabeth's, which might be seen as a
measure of the comparitave value of life. As of 1998, Leslie and John have
been dating for ten years.
