Patricia Deere (Tish) is the last horse in the late Patricia
Deere Hewitt's breeding program. Tish is a bit of a Valley Girl, since
she has a tendency to not pay attention when she is being led, and thus
walks into things. (Someone claimed it is because she has too much
Raffles in her.)
After she was trained under saddle, we leased her out. In July 1999 she had a bay colt by the black stallion Shah of Gizeh. We nicknamed the baby Little John, while his breeder called him Smoothie because he is so nice. His new owner registered him as Shah Conquistador (Shac). He is unusual because he does not have a single white hair on him.
Tish returned in January 2000. After getting settled in, we started working her and getting her back into shape. She is such a quiet horse that Fred now takes his lessons on her instead of Dixie.
We took Tish to her first show, Crabbet Celebration VII. She was a little nervous, but her classes didn't bother her at all. The first class, hunter pleasure, had 23 entries and she finished 5th! She also performed well in her open class. The next morning she and Fred tried halter for the first time. Tish paid attention and did a nice trot past the grandstand, then dozed in the sun while we waited for the results. The show did not award ribbons, but instead gave out medals based on how each horse scored against the Crabbet standard. Tish earned a bronze medal.
This winter Evelyn started taking most of her riding lessons on Tish. She had outgrown the older schooling horse and pony. Fred laughs when Evelyn says that Tish goes too fast, because he and Jeannie think she is very slow. Actually, after Tish got over an infection she had much more energy. Evelyn's mom is an artist, and Evelyn drew the picture of Tish and herself shown below.
