The Importance of Vet Care

Sadly enough, you do not here the words "vet care" and "bird" in the same sentence very often. Perhaps it is because birds are smaller than all the other animals out there, but while we consistently take our dogs, cats, and other animals to the vet... our birds are putting one foot up in their cages! However, not to our knowledge, they could also be battling a life-threatening disease and suffering right before our eyes. That is why vet care is SO important. It does not matter how big or expensive your bird is they DO deserve proper vet care from an avian specialized vet.

The cause of death in birds that I commonly hear is either: I did not know the signs of illness in a bird, or: I did not take them to the vet at all or in time. A check-up for your bird at least each year can pretty much wipe out both those excuses.

Another issue people have is that they cannot afford vet care, even in the event of an emergency. Now honestly, if one cannot afford vet care, then they should not have gotten a bird in the first place. If this is your case, then I have two options for you: either find a new home for your bird(s), or save up an "emergency vet fund". No bird should have to suffer because their owners cannot afford proper vet care for them. In my opinion, that is animal cruelty, and is very wrong.

However, before you run off to your nearest veterinarian office, please hear me out on this: most importantly, you need to take your bird to an avian vet. A normal pet vet, which is most likely only trained to understand illnesses in dogs and cats, most likely cannot benefit your bird. An avian vet has been educated especially in the area of your pet and is most likely the best vet for your bird.

In light of this discussion, I hope you will spend tomorrow afternoon booking a check-up for your birds. Big or small, all birds deserve vet care just as much as your dogs and cats do. You would not let your human children go without health care, would you? Then do not let your avian children go without health care either.
