Think Your Bird's Diet Is Best?

There are a TON of diet choices out there! From treats and supplements to "fortified" seed diets and pellets. Most bird owners think that they are feeding their pets the best possible diet, but others are lost in the dust. Even if you think your birds diet is great, keep reading and you might be surprised.

Let me start at the bottom: all seed diets. If you feed your bird this, you must get up into this century, please! This is the most terrible thing that you can feed your bird. Even if your seed mix is supposedly "fortified" it can NEVER ever be the only thing your bird eats, because it does not have everything that your bird needs.

Next from the bottom are seeds, fruits, veggies and treats. If you feed your bird this, you are doing okay, but this is not the best diet for your bird. However fruits and veggies fed daily are very important, so keep going with that. Also please note that the best seed mix includes many different types of seeds, and with the least amount of preservatives and artificial coloring that is possible.

Now we have reached the top: pellets, fruits, veggies, seeds, and treats. This is the best diet for your bird, and if you are feeding this to your pets, you are doing a GREAT job of bird keeping. However, before you congratulate yourself, check your pellet mix for these qualities: no preservatives (like ethoxyquin) or artificial colorings. These qualities are usually found in the natural pellet mixes. Also, if you cannot find a good brand in your local pet shop, ask your vet about ordering specialty pellet brands from them.

So, were you surprised? Hopefully for you, you were not! If you are not giving your pets the best diet, then you should definitely look into improving it. Even if your bird will not try veggies or touch pellets, trying different methods and brands of food in a persistent attempt to improve your pets diet will pay off in the long run! After all, food is what your pets THRIVE on. It should be the best that you can give! Good luck!
