Association of Volunteer Artists and Musicians

Association of Volunteer Artists and Musicians, or AVAM, a New Mexico non-profit corporation, is an umbrella organization created to bring entertainment and other services to people who can’t get to them for any reason and to provide opportunities for artists, musicians and others to use their talents in service to their communities. Membership is open to anyone, not just artists and musicians and no commitment of time is necessary, but we strongly recommend that everyone come along (“or go alone...”) -- the experience is wonderful.

Starting with retirement communities, senior care and Alzheimer’s facilities, AVAM is expanding into other care facilities, group homes, orphanages, schools, etc.

We believe that it is helpful and beneficial to bring live entertainment into care centers and rest homes because many of these places rarely get any. Its an established fact that lack of variety and stimulation cause a decline in health generally, and particularly in mental health. The feedback we’ve received from both care givers and receivers is that our performances are cheering people up and energizing them for far longer than our performances. And these concerts provide variety and stimulation for us as well. We think we’re helping people and we know doing it makes us feel better.

We never ask for payment but we know that some places we play need free entertainment far more than others. We are happy to let audiences who have the resources help us bring entertainment to audiences who don’t. As Thom says, “If you have an entertainment budget and you want to give us some of it, we’ll be happy to take it.”

AVAM was founded by Albuquerque singer-songwriters Cabin Lance and Thom Parrott who have been performing folk, country, blues and rock-n-roll in Albuquerque and elsewhere for a combined total of more than 50 years. Together and separately, they have put on free concerts for the homeless, created and operated talent showcases and performed for various social causes.
