Obscene Carvings in Christian Churches: Why?

You can read a lot about these carvings by following the relevant links in the Scriporium. On this page we'll be examining the really crucial question of why these things exist.

A Plethora of Possibilities

There are several possible explanations for these oddities (which are actually quite common!):
1) They were really depictions of traditional teachings of the Church against the prince of this world and sins of the flesh, and this was acknowledged and accepted by everyone at face value.
2) They were meant to be such, but were not perceived that way be everyone.
3) The builders intended no such meaning at all, being a bunch of pagan purveyors of depravity.
