Appendix A — Survey Questions
In order to express the point of view of others on this topic, a survey was sent to a number of people that I have met while I have been online. While the survey was sent to about 80 people that I know online (hmmm I know more people online than IRL ) the responses I received were somewhat limited. Apparently online people like surveys about as much as real life people ...lol
Below is the email that was sent to survey other community members.

Why am I writing? Well as many of you know, I am taking a course - Human Side of Computing - Last credit, I graduate in the fall *wooohooo*. For the final project I have to write a report on Virtual Communities, so I am writing my many online friends, family, acquaintances, etc. I am hoping you will help me by answering a few questions about your online experiences. If you don't want to participate, no problem just delete this email...if ya wanna help here are my questions: Note all information will be kept confidential and my final report will be posted on a new site www.geocities.com/askhearts (nothing there yet...too much homework *lol* but I plan to put lots off stuff later). Answer only the questions you want to - you do not have to do them all.

- Do you participate in activities in a chat room or social lounge such as Yahoo Card Games? Yeah I know most of you go to Gin or Hearts, but what about other stuff.*lol*
- Which ones? How often? Approx how many hours per week?
- How long have you been going online?...
- Do you use Pagers, ICQ or just email to keep in touch?
- Do you feel a sense of community in any of the areas that you "hang out"? By this I mean have you formed close friendships/relationships/kinships/enemies *lol*, etc with those Ids you commonly "hang out" with in the places you go?...
- Have any of you met in real life? If so describe the experience great, disappointing etc and why. If you have not met anyone in real life would you like to and why?...
- Why do you go online? What attracts you to this form of socialization? Do you see this as a life long habit or a passing phase?...
- Do you have a website that you share pictures, ideas, etc with your online friends?
- Do you feel as close to some of your online friends as you do your real life friends or family? Explain?...
- Do you act the same online as you do in real life. For example are you shy in real life and bold in the lounge?...
- How has being "online" affected your real life?
- Do real life friends and family complain or get upset about your time online or the friends you have online? explain
- Anything you can think of that I have not covered in the questions, feel free to comment on.
