The Rock Art Society of India was founded in 1990. Right from its inception it has been a member of International Federation of Rock Art Organisa-tions (IFRAO) and provides an international forum for the dissemination of research findings.
In the introduction in its first volume (1990), it says that "purakala (paleo-art) includes petroglyphs, rock paintings, engravings, figurines, ornamental objects and other such things reflecting the creativity and process of humanisation of early man." Later it goes on to say that "One of the most important objectives of this journal is to help developing new theories and advanced methodology for the study, appreciation, documentation, conservation and preservation of Purakala ... so that it may emerge as a new scientific discipline of knowledge." Purakala (ISSN: 0971-2143), the journal of RASI, was also established in 1990. It is the only Indian journal completely devoted to the promotion of scientific research and popularisation of rock art heritage. It is one of the major journals of the IFRAO family. RASI membership is open to all.Sources for information about the society:
