Notes

  • *Geologically: Humans occupy(ied) the Cenozoic Era, Quaternary Period, Pleistocene or Holocene Epoch.
  • **Mesolithic: Mesolithic is a brief period, between the Paleolithic and the Neolithic. Its duration ranges from a couple of thousand years in the Near East to more than 20,000 years in parts of Africa, and upto 35,000 years in Shri Lanka. ... The earliest discovery of microliths seem to have been made in India.

    Sources:
  • "Advanced Hunting Gathering Communities in Maharashtra - Mesolithic", V. N. Misra, 2004. K A R Kennedy points out that the term mesolithic meant something quite different in the European and Indian contexts. Maybe that is why some archaeologists, such as Braidwood reject the labels such as paleolithic, mesolithic, neolithic altogether.
  • The dates given in this table for the pre- and proto- historic periods are very general. As mentioned above, to assign unique dates to different historical periods in a vast area like the Indian Subcontinent, over a long period of time, is not possible. Different parts of the subcontinent have practiced different cultures over different periods of time. Thus it is not uncommon to find Neolithic and Chalcolithic cultures existing side by side. Even today one can find people in the hunting, gathering stages and/or using stone tools.
  • Sonawane2002: "Mesolithic Culture of Gujarat", V. H. Sonavane. Paper in "Mesolithic India", ed. V. D. Mishra and J. N. Pal, Allahabad Univ. 2002.
  • Some of these articles and papers mentioned above are in pdf format. You need to
download the Acrobat reader to read these, if you do not already have it installed.
