Building an Opening Repertoire

With the White Pieces

  • Select an opening that suits your style of play
  • 1.e4 typically yields an open game
  • 1.d4 typically yields a positional game
  • Other first moves - work with a master
  • With 1.e4, have a solid weapon against Sicilian, French, Caro-Kann and Ruy Lopez
  • With 1.d4, have a solid weapon against QGD, Slav, Nimzo, and King's Indian
  • Select opening variations that leads to similar middlegame strategies
  • Understand middlegame strategies of your selected opening
  • Understand pawn structure/endgame that arises from your opening
  • Make notes and update your repertoire

With the Black Pieces

  • Select an opening against 1.e4
  • Select an opening against 1.d4 that have similar setup with your 1.e4 response
  • For example, Slav with Caro-Kann/French, King's Indian with Modern/Pirc
  • Understand middlegame strategies of your selected opening
  • Understand pawn structure/endgame that arises from your opening
  • Make notes and update your repertoire
