Although high heels originated as male footwear around 1500, since the late 1700s, men's shoes have had primarily low heels. While an extremely pointed toe is a modern stylization appearing in the 1940s, the toe of the original boots retained the more rounded shape of other boots. In England, the balmoral is known as the Oxford. The word "Oxford" is used by American clothing companies to market shoes that are not Oxfords, such as rubber-sole bluchers. Because of this, standardization has been slow, and fitting between companies is not always consistent. The two exceptions are cowboy boots, which continue to sport a taller riding heel, and a brief resurgence in higher-heeled shoes for men in the 1970s(in Saturday Night Fever, John Travolta's character wears a Cuban heel in the opening sequence). The altered forces at the knee caused by walking in high heels, may predispose.
