A shoe is an item of footwear worn on the foot or feet of a human, dog, cat, horse, or doll. While an extremely pointed toe is a modern stylization appearing in the 1940s, the toe of the original boots retained the more rounded shape of other boots. Cowboy boots refer to a specific style of riding boot, historically worn by cowboys. Heel protectors are widely used in ballroom dancing, as such dances are often held on wooden flooring. Some designs of dress shoes can be worn by either gender. If it is not possible to avoid high heels altogether, some doctors suggest that the wearer wear high-heels no more often than twelve hours a day, and that they are spending at least a third of the time on their feet in contour-supportive "flat" shoes (such as exercise sandals), or well-cushioned "sneaker-type".
