Today, high-heels are typically worn by women, with heights varying from a Cuban heel of 1�" height to a stiletto heel (or spike heel) of 4" or more. While mounting, the slick, treadless leather sole of the boot helped to hold it in place in the absence of lacing. The stiletto of certain kinds of high-heels can damage some types of floors. they change the angle of the foot exposed to air. Usually, a high-topped shoe is secured by laces or zippers, although some styles have elastic inserts to ease slipping the shoe on. Often the heel of the sole is rubber for durability and traction, while the front is leather for style. Specialized shoes will often have modifications on this design: athletic cleats have spikes embedded in the outsole to grip the ground; many kinds of dancing shoes have much softer.
