Anime-niac's Realm: Anime F.A.Q.'s

These are just a collection of some frequently asked questions about anime in general. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any more. But if they're already on the list, DO NOT ASK ME!

1. What is anime?
Anime is Japanese animation. Simple as that.

2. How can I tell regular animation from anime?
Anime sports several characteristics that distinguish it from American animation like Disney. Normally, anime characters have full, bushy, well-shaded hair; guys are frequently drawn with longer hair than one would see in an American cartoon. Also, noses are usually small and pointy. Focus is on the eyes, and they are usually very large and present the reflected light. Certain animated elements are also present. For example, when a character is scared, worried, or embarassed, a large sweatdrop will drip down their face. Moreover, they sigh a little cloud or fall over after a stupid/obvious comment or irony. In a few shows, a character stays still and the background is looping (just watch Pokemon and Speed Racer). Lastly, the content is a bit different. Anime can deal a lot with monsters and other fictional characters like goddesses, faries, and people with elemential attacks. Violence and nudity are present in many, and romance can be quite thick. Also, An anime has a continuing plot throught the course of the show, while relgular cartoon plots last only through the course of the episode and (if you're lucky) a two-part episode.

3. What is hentai anime?
Hentai is anime for the adult market. Basically, it's animated porn. *gag*

4. What is shoujo anime?
Shoujo is anime drawn by women, starring women, and meant for women. Some prime examples are Sailor Moon, Card Captor Sakura, Vision of Escaflowne, and Revolutionary Girl Utena.

5. What are Pokemon?
Pokemon are little monsters from Nintendo that debueted in Pokemon Red/Blue for GameBoy. All Pokemon have an element type and have strengths and weaknesses depending on their type. They fight for their trainer, or owner, using various attacks. They are captured in Pokeballs and analyzed by the Pokedex.

6. What do "chibi" and "kawaii" mean?
They are both Japanese words, "chibi" meaning "little" and "kawaii" meaning "cute". They will often be used in the description of an anime or character. A pretty girl may also be described as kawaii.

7. What is Mecha anime?
Mecha anime is basically giant robot anime. It is normally aimed towwrds boys, but there are some exceptions [BubbleGum Crisis]. A good example of Mecha is Neon Genisis Evangelion.

8. What's yaoi/yuri? What's shounen-ai/shoujo-ai?
Shounen-ai is anime involving a guy-guy romantic relationship; yaoi is a guy-guy sexulal relationship. Shoujo-ai is a girl-girl romantic relationship; yuri is a girl-girl sexual relationship.

9. What's 'manga'?
Manga are Japanese comic books. For more, go to the Manga section of the Anime-niac's Realm [when it's up].

10. What's 'shipping'?
Shipping is believing in (or something close) a relationship between two characters. The word at first applied to Pokemon, but has spread to Digimon, Harry Potter, and anything anime. Someone once said that "shipping is 50% relationship and 50% worship." Visit the Shipping section of the Anime-niac's Realm for more information.

11. Aeva, are you really an anime character?
I can't believe I got this question e-mailed to me. @_@' No, I'm not, actually. I just like to think I am. (shhhhh...)

12. What are 'bishounen' and 'bishoujo'?
Bishounen translates to pretty boy, and bishoujo to pretty girl.

13. What is this "glomping" concept you constantly speak of?
Glomp = big hug.... anime style!!

14. Is that the REAL Jyou Kido that speaks here?
Oh.My.Goddess.
As much as I hate to say it, no. This is a website, and Jyou is anime. Neither are real. I am real; you are real. Jyou is not. But I still think he is, anyway. ^_~
