Law School Diary

September 4. 1993

Dear Diary,
What am I doing? Like I'm talking to somebody... Hell to introductions! I just bought this note book and thought that I may need it since I'm almost killing my roomate Renee with all my problems and insecurities. I'm saying this: One day, she'll get tired of listening to me complaining about everything that goes on in my boring life. Boring? I don't know... So here I am... in law school. What the hell am I doing here? I don't know... I followed Billy (oh sweet fading memory now...) to Radcliffe University because I wanted to be close to him and continue to smell his butt... He wanted to be a lawyer and since I don't have a clue of who I am, I thought I could be one too and then still be close to him... Big mistake!
Now..
I'm all alone, well Renee is there (thank God!) Billy moved to Michigan two months ago and half of my broken heart is waiting for him to get back , even if I know, deep down inside that it's over... because Billy said that it'd be better if we ended our relationship. He didn't want to live a long distance romance...
Renee says that I'm wasting tissues on him but I'm not. Ever single tear that I cry over Billy is worth it...
Billy Allen Thomas is my soulmate as silly as it seems...

Awful! This morning, I looked at myself in the mirror and saw... a gray hair! Nooooooooooo! I'm only 23 years old. God! Give me a break! I already dyed my hair. I am not going to let this happen !

Renee is the sweetest ! She's very determinated to make me forget about Billy. I doubt she'll succeed... but anyway, she's very nice to me...
She decided to thow out a private party with some other girls from our dorm. We got caught drunk, wearing bras and panties. I didn't care being barely dressed because I don't have anything to hide...
No breast (an other thing to complain about!)
Maybe Billy left me because he was tired to not grab anything... Ahhhh! Let's forget about this...
Billy?
Who's that guy anyway?
No idea...
Anyway, we didn't get any sanction for the drinking in the dorm. Since it's our first offense ever, the university gave us a chance (there is a God!) but we'll have to behave...

Sorry I haven't write for a while.
Wait! Who am I apologizing to? It's only a diary...
I was too busy with my classes.
Today, I met some weird guy...
Richard Fish.

I bumped into him in the corridor as I was making my way to the finance classes.

"Hey! Sorry can I ask you something?" he said, with a "trying to be seductive" smile.

I looked at him, holding my books tightly on my chest. "That guy is weird." I thought.

"Huh... Huh..."

I'm a shy person... sometimes.

"Girl... You want to make fifty bucks... easy...? " he proposed with a wink.

I gasped.

"Who... do you think I am? You... You jerk!"

I was ready to punch him. Then he explained:

"I never attend to my classes... So boring, wasting my time, not making money... I saw you coming... you look like you may need some new clothes, bygones!"

I ignored him, opened the classroom door and he followed me inside, with a scared look.

"Please.." he begged, his face becoming pale . "I'm a classroomphobic... I can't breath... "

He took a hand to his neck and choked.

"Okay... Okay..." I finally agreed.

We got back outside in the corridor.

"What is it?" I asked with impatience. "Hurry! The teacher is coming!"

"Fifty bucks per class that's why I'd give you if you let me borrow your notes... "

So... I had to agree... Fifty bucks per class which means almost two hundred a week plus my scolarship loan... I don't care if the money comes from some rich spoiled boy. If I manage to save some of it... I'll have enough money for a nice face lift before I get too old...

Speaking of annoying people... I just saw Kimmy Bishop again...
That... prude...
I met her the other night in church when I was looking for an answer from God. In fact, I do have some issues with HIM since Billy left me...
Anyway, back to Kimmy Bishop...
What can I say? ZZZZZZZ.... Should I say more? She's so boring ! But the worst thing is that she likes me ! She's always on my way... Yesterday, she almost jumped in my arms screamed with that "getting on my nerves" voice:
"Allyyyyyyyyyy!"
She 's always smiling with that stupid smile of hers and telling me about some bible chapters. She thinks that I can relate to her... Oh gee....

"Ally... You really need a Billy substitute." Renee said, picking up a slice of smoked meat with her fork.

We were in the cafeteria, taking lunch between two classes.

"A what?" A substitute?"

"Yeah... Let's face it.. As long as you keep thinking about Billy you'll never forget about him. You have to set your mind onto someone else. You have to force yourself to have a crush on an other guy... any decent guy.... A substitute guy..."

She smiled, proud of her own idea.

"A substitute... like a meat substitute?" I asked, surprised. "You want me to throw a juicy steak like Billy for some peanut butter guy?"

Renee laughed and bit her smoked meat sandwich.

"Ally you're a desperate case! I bet you'll be hooked on Billy all your life. You're just the obsessive type... and you enjoy it!"

"I... I... I'm not..." I stammered, playing nervously with my fork.

"Then... get a crush on someone else!" Renee exclaimed.

"I want Billy!"

"You see... you're obsessing..."

" I am not..."

"Yes you are!"

I sighed.

"What should I do, Renee?" I asked, desesperate.

"Fall for another guy!" she replied with a huge smile.

"Oh! That's an easy thing... very easy... What do you want me to do? Count until three and then ooopsie, I'm in love...? This is silly! "

"You don't have to really fall in love. Just get a crush... fantasize a little..." Renee added.

"And... and where should I find this fantasy man?" I asked, not convinced.

"Right here!" she said, taking a look around.

I banged my head on the table. This was crazy. Renee was just acting like a teenager!

"Oooh! I see the perfect match." Renee finally said, after an intense thirty seconds of research.

She pointed a guy, just a few tables away. I took a look...

Hmmm... Not bad...

"Are... are you serious?" I asked with panic. "You want me to go talk to him? Right... right now?"

Renee shook her head.

"Nah... I know who the guy is... He's in charge of the Law practice simulation . Have you heard about it?"

"No..."

I took a glimpse at the guy again. He was reading a book seriously, not taking care of the people chatting around him.

"He looks like a nerd!" I said.

"Gosh Ally... The guy isn't a nerd because he wears glasses! Anyway, the law practice simulation is organized by seniors. They are helping freshmans like us to practice closings... not for real, but it's simulation. I heard that it's very interesting..."

"Good! Like improvisation or theater?"

"It sounds like that..."

Renee winked at me.

"So..." I began.

"So... You'll subscribe to that group and meet him." She said.

"Oh... Okay and then...?"

I was starting to get an headache.

"Fall for him!"

I bursted out laughing.

"And what makes you think that I could fall for... him?"

I pointed the guy with a finger, when he suddenly raised his head to look at us.

He smiled... to...me.

Renee noticed the look he gave to me. Beautiful, deep brown eyes... oh gosh...

I blushed.

"You see Ally... You're already having a crush on him."

"W...What... ?" I am not... I just..."

I catched my breath and stared at my salad.

"Does this fantasy guy have a name?" I asked, trying to look like casual.

Renee nodded and smiled.

"Yes... Larry Paul."

Larry Paul... Larry Paul... Ahhh... What can I say? Hmmm.... It sounds... weird. When I say his name out loud do I have a feeling about him?.. Hmmm... Come on... You can do it... No! I don't feel anything. Gosh! I just miss Billy! Billy! Billy! Why did you have to go away????

Renee is really into that "grow a crush on some guy and stop complaining" thing. She thinks that because I blushed the other day when he looked at me (I mean Larry Paul) there's a chance that he could be a possible fantasy man to me...
Seriously...
I mean SERIOUSLY... Am I the kind of girl to fall for a guy who looks at me with the sweetest eyes... Hmmm... No! I am not that stupid! Gosh! Thinking about this Larry guy makes me cling even more to Billy. The opposite effect!

But Renee reassured me... She says that I don't know the guy yet... that's probably why I'm not so into it... When I ask her why she chose Larry Paul to be my fantasy man, she says that he's cute (I have to agree!) and that she has a "Feeling"...
This is not helping me!

So now, I'm preparing myself for the "Law practice simulation group" meeting.
He! He!
LPSG: Lonesome psychic searching for a guy
So...I'm preparing myself... It's like I'm going on a date but I'm just going to a lecture hall... Renee wanted me to wear something sexy but I told her that I'm not some prostitute recruting clients... She says that the point is to "fall" for a guy without really falling in love with him... Is there a difference? Nah... I don't know... Anyway, she says that I need to get into the thrill of having a crush on a guy to cure from my Billy obsession. She added that some fantasies will stimulate my hormones and that I'll feel less depressed... She's weird sometimes!!!
Oh! I have to go! Renee is already out in the corridor...
What am I doing?
God! Help me!!!!

As soon as we arrived to the meeting, we found some chairs. We were about twenty students in the lecture hall... We started to talk since the meeting hasn't begin yet... and of course that talking was about Larry Paul.

"I did some research on him" Renee whispered with conspirer eyes.

"Do you want to hear more about him?"

"Am I supposed to say yes?"

Renee raised her shoulders.

"Ally..." she said calmly. "If you knew more about him it'll help the case!"

"What case?"

"Yours! Your desesperate case! Listen now... He's 26 years old, single, finishing his last semester here. I heard that he's terrific..."

"In bed?" I giggled.

"You dirty! I meant terrific like the most promising student here... like a terrific lawyer. In bed... I don't know... My source hasn't slept with him..."

"Okay... then what else?" I asked, more interested.

"Last year, he had some major roles in plays and musical comedies. He plays piano and sings."

"Oh my Gosh!" I gasped.

"What?"

He just entered.

Renee pratically jumped into her chair and squeezed my arm.

"Ally! He's there!"

"I... I know..."

I let my eyes follow him. He nodded at some guy next to him and immediatly made is way to the front of the room where he cleared his throat to get the attention.

"Look at him... he's so cute" Renee whispered.

"Hey! Are you the one having a crush on him?" I asked with irritation.

"Shhh.. Ally... I'm just being supportive that's all..."

He began to talk:

"Hi everyone. I'm Larry Paul. This is Allan Simpson. You may all have different reasons for being here and...."

"Hmmm..." I thought and... lost almost three minutes of his introduction because I was staring at him, trying to focus on his lips or whatever. He had in fact, the most beautiful lips ever. They were a little pink and when he was making a pause, I could see that he was licking them... that was barely perceptible. I got back to earth and listened.

"We'll try to help you to feel more comfortable in a court room... to find your pleading style, if I can this... I'm sure that you've been praticing in front of your mirror... But there's a difference between talking to yourself and trying to convince people. This is your chance to get direct feedback about your attitude in a court room."

He posed and looked at me. A little smile formed on his lips. I felt Renee squeezing my arm again. He replaced his glasses and continued. Now, I could breathe.

"You may not have an idea about what I'm talking about because you're all freshmans... Remember... This is just simulation. This is the place where you can allow yourself to make mistakes."

He nodded and sat down. Allan Simpson distributed sheets. We had to study a fictionnal case and then present a two minutes speech in front of everyone.

"See you in two days. If you have any questions... we're there." Larry Paul said.

Renee raised up and sighed with satisfaction. She took a look at me. I could feel that my cheeks were burning. We followed the other students out of the room.

"So... Ally..." she began.

"I don't know..." I responded, uncertain.

Allan Simpson got out of the room. Larry Paul was alone in there.

Renee pointed the lecture hall with her nose.

"No... no... no..." I said, understanding what she had in mind. "I can't go in there! I just can't... Let's just forget about this. I don't need a fantasy man.. I can easily forget about Billy..."

Renee pinched me.

"Aaaahhhhh!"

"Ally!" she said with a menacing tone. "You're going to get in there and introduce yourself to him... Now Go!"

She pushed me back inside.

Larry Paul raised his head immediatly and smiled like he was just expecting me to show up.

"Hi!" he simply said.

My hands started to tremble.

"Hi...Hi!" I said two times.

Stupid Ally! Stupid... What am I doing here?

"What's your name?" he asked looking down at a list of student names.

"W..What?" I stammered. "Oh...huh... McBeal... A... Ally McBeal..."

He smiled again. I took a glimpse at his white teeth. Gosh! That guy is so cute!

"McBeal...Hmmm.. that sounds like a new McDonald's sandwich. Funny!"

He laughed at his own joke. He's not so cute after all.

"And YOU!" I replied with a harsh tone because I was hurt. "Larry Paul? What's that... name? It's like the first and the middle name together. It... It makes you wait for the last name and then you realise that it's incomplete pro... probably just like the guy!"

When I get angry, all the shyness is gone... really...gone!

"Okay... No sense of humor! I'll try to remember that..." he mumbled, forcing his eyebrows.

"Hey! I have a great sense of humor! I just don't like silly kindergarden's jokes about my name... that's the thing!"

"Were you saying that I'm kind of incomplete?" Larry replied, fixing his glasses. "Gee... Were you talking about my personality? If so... I don't know how you can say this because you don't know a thing about me... And if you were talking about me physically, I can say that I have no body part missing....So..."

I showed him my teeth and it wasn't because I was smiling. He was getting on my nerves already. Renee Radick! Huh... What a "feeling" she had! I'm going to kill her!

"I have to disagree! A guy who's making jokes about names has surely a part missing... maybe a part of the brain... I bet that you're the type of guy to..."

"I bet YOU're the type of girl to judge a person by his cover. No.. I don't bet! I'm sure you are!"

"So this is it? The silly whatever simulation group? That's the point of this? Are YOU trying to prove that YOU're a great lawyer too be?"

"Are YOU always trying to get the last word?"

We both stopped, painting. I realised that I had my finger pointed on him like a gun. He sighed.

"Okay... Let's pretend that we don't already hate each other." he said, catching his breath.

"Okay..." I agreed without thinking.

We stared at each other for a moment, speechless. I knew the guy for five minutes and I already had issues with him.

Weird...

"So Ally MCBEAL." he said, insisting on my last name. Why did you subscribe to our group? What are your expectations?"

I thought: "I was supposed to fall for you but since you're a jerk... let's forget about this..."

"Forget it!" I mumbled and then turned my back to him. He followed me outside.

"Wait! Why do you want to be a lawyer?" he asked, grabbing my arm to make me turn around.

"I... I..." I tried to reply, struggling to get my arm out of his grip but he didn't let it go.

He leaned his head on the side, waiting.

"I... I don't have a clue." I finally admitted.

He smiled lightly and let my arm go.

"Perhaps I can help you..." he proposed.

"YOU... helping ME?" I asked with a gasp.

"Hey! I'm just offering!" he replied, raising his shoulders. "Maybe you need to talk... to figure out if you really want to become a lawyer...

" "And you're thinking that you could help me? " I asked, suspicious. "I just met you and I... I don't have the feeling that your the type of guy to..."

"Wait!" he interrupted. "You don't know me... yet.."

"What makes you think that I want to know YOU?" I asked with impatience.

"What makes you think that I can't help YOU?" he asked back with the same tone.

"Be... because..." I stammered, feeling angry again. "We just met and we're already fighting. I don't sympatize with the.. the... ennemy."

He bursted out laughing.

"Come on... just a coffee..." he proposed with a sweet smile.

My heart missed a beat. I surprised myself by responding to his smile.

I was weak!

"And... What if with we start to fight again? I'll probably end up spilling coffee on your head... Would you like it?"

He closed the door of the lecture hall and looked back at me.

"So... that means it's a yes..." he said, smiling widely.

I sighed.

"Y... yeah... Let's give it a try." I agreed, staring into his brown eyes. "But... one more fight and I'm out of the picture. So you have to behave..."

"You have to behave too! Don't start anything! " he replied, his finger warning me.

"Oh gosh! Again! You see?" I exclaimed, my cheeks burning.

"Now... let's go!" he said, taking my hand.

Gosh... It's so late. 4 am... Ahhhh! I just arrived...
This was a long evening! I'm just so tired. Renee is sleeping. I better shut the light down before she wakes up and asked me about what happened with Larry. I'll wait until tomorrow to write it down.
Just a little thing...
When I say his name...
Larry Paul... Larry Paul...
Now, I do feel a little something.
I mean just a LITTLE something...

Go to the next part!
