Chapter Five

Next scene: the next night, Larry's sitting in his office, looking out at the Boston skyline, with lights twinkling brightly. It's a pretty view, but Larry's mood is very somber. [This is another of the scenes Larry filmed on Monday, which was inserted at this point in the story, with all involved parties, signing confidentiality agreements.]

The phone rings and he answers it. "Hello?"

"Hey, Larry, it's me," and he immediately recognizes Jaime's voice. "I tried you at your place, but the sitter said you were still at the office. Kinda late to be working isn't it?"

"Just catching up on some things. I've got a trial starting in a week and with no assistant, it leaves a lot to be done."

"You should really look at hiring an associate or something. Whatever happened to that woman who you had working for you?"

"Who, Corretta? She's working for another firm now."

"Oh, well, to the reason I called. I don't know if now's the best time to tell you this, because quite honestly you really sound down, but I can't put it off any longer. Larry, I've met someone. We've been seeing each other for a few months now and things have just moved along real quickly. He asked me to marry him last week and I said yes . . ." Jamie paused, as if waiting for Larry's reaction. When he says nothing, she continued, "Are you ok? Sam met him last time he was home. Did he tell you anything? He told me, when I was taking him back to the airport, that Alan was really nice. But I guess that's not the biggest news. Alan works for an international management company, and he's relocating to England, for the next year. I really want to go with him and so we've decided to be married next month. We would leave for England in March," Jaime's voice was just bubbling with excitement.

There was still no reply from Larry. "Larry, are you even listening to me?"

"Yes, I'm still here. I guess I'm just trying to take it all in. Listen, Jaime, I'm really happy you've finally met someone and you're getting married. But there's no way in hell that I'm gonna let you take Sam to England. He's settled in here and he's really happy in school, he's made good friends, he spends lots of time with Helena, my parents, and he even likes Amanda. Go off to England if you want to, but don't even think about taking Sam with you!" Larry said quite vehemently.

"Hold on, Larry, have I even said anything about taking Sam with me? That's the main reason I'm calling. I was wondering . . ." she paused for a moment, and then continued, "I was hoping you'd agree to keep Sam with you in Boston. It's gonna be hard to leave him behind, but Alan travels a lot and I want to be free to go with him, at least for the first year or so. I had hoped that maybe you'd consider bringing Sam to England during his summer break for a long visit. I know he's been happy with you there -- he's just thriving and always bubbling over with things you guys have been doing, whenever I talk with him. You were right, Larry. This was a good move, for all of us. So what do you say?"

"That'd be fine Jamie," Larry replied, in a rather subdued tone. "Sam is doing well here and I frankly can't imagine my daily life without him. I appreciate the trust you're putting in me. And yeah, we'll look into a visit this summer. So when's the wedding?"

"We've set it for February 2 and we leave for England one month later. You'll come for the wedding?"

"I'll definitely be there Jaime, both Sam and I."

"Well, listen, I've got to go. Alan and I are on our way out. Thanks again, Larry, for everything..." Again she paused, and then said, "Larry, are you sure you're ok? You just really don't sound like yourself."

"I'm fine, just a lot going on. Well, listen, keep in touch and Sam and I will call you this weekend, sometime, ok?"

"Ok, talk to you then," and Jaime hung up.

Larry slowly hung up the phone and returned to his gazing out the window. The emotions and feelings running through his mind were a little overwhelming. He couldn't believe that his first thought, when Jaime had told him her news about getting married, was relief. He would finally be able to put the guilt he'd been carrying around with him over not giving it another go with Jaime, for Sam's sake, behind him. The second thought that had rushed through his mind, before Jaime had allayed his fear, was the thought of losing Sam. He couldn't have borne it to think of Sam no longer in his life. They had settled into a very comfortable routine, and he could no more imagine Sam not being in his life now than he could imagine doing without air to breathe. He felt happiness for Jaime, he really did. She'd been alone for so long, so if this Alan guy made her happy, he was happy for her. But then, this happiness she was experiencing just further highlighted Larry's unhappiness. Because for the past two days, he'd been unable to think of anything else but seeing Ally outside the ice cream shop, kissing that guy.

The day is ending
And the same old pain begins
Each deeper shade of blue
Brings back more of you to miss
I fight the tears again
But I just can't win and

He sighed and closed his eyes, giving in to the memories that had been plaguing him, since he'd seen Ally. He pictured her when she had sat in his office, admitting that the reason she was upset was because he hadn't kissed her on their fourth date. She'd been so adorable and that's when he had the first inkling how deeply he was falling for her. His mind played over the time they got her Christmas tree and had decorated it and she'd plied him with eggnog. They'd had so much fun that night that he'd almost been able to forget that Christmas made him sad.

Here comes the night
And here I go out of my mind again
Here comes the night
And here I go crazy missin' you
Wanting you
Needing you
I just can't stand it
Here comes the night again

He remembered when Jaime had come to see him about moving to Canada and he'd ended up kissing her and then he and Ally had had that awful fight. And then, had finally made up. That night of lovemaking was burned in his memory. They'd made love before, but there was something that happened that night. When he'd been deep inside of her, it's as if she became a part of him. He could still remember the feel of her hands on him, the taste of her mouth, the softness of her body, how it felt to press himself so deeply into her that they became one.

I still remember
You lyin' next to me
The love would go so deep
We wouldn't sleep at all
These nights I'm losing sleep
To a lonely memory

He thought about how difficult it had been to go to Detroit, when Sam needed him, but remembered how strong Ally had been, because that's what he had needed from her then. How had she known that? Had she really learned so much about him to know he couldn't have made the decision to leave her so easily, without the encouragement from her?

Here comes the night
And here I go out of my mind again
Here comes the night
And here I go crazy missin' you
Wanting you
Needing you
I just can't stand it
Here comes the night again
Will it never end
Why can't I forget forever

And then their reunion, when he came back from Detroit -- forever. He remembered dismantling the snowman, but before they'd even finished, they'd ended up on the floor, not even getting all their clothes off before they were desperately kissing, feeling, searching and finally finding each other. And then they were home. It wasn't til later that they even felt the melting snow from the remainder of the snowman beneath them on the floor. But then, they'd simply moved into the bathroom and warmed up together in a hot, steamy shower, soaping each other's bodies, and reigniting, yet again, the flame that burned so brightly between them. Later they had fallen into bed and both slept more soundly than they ever had during their separation, their bodies intertwined under the covers.

Larry brought himself back to the present and continued to stare out the window, as tears slowly fell from his eyes. He wiped them away, brusquely, watching the lights twinkling from the buildings outside his window, and wondered aloud "what in the world am I going to do? I can't live without her. I've tried." And he put his head in his hands and really began to cry.

Here comes the night
And here I go out of my mind again
Here comes the night
And here I go crazy missin' you
Wanting you
Needing you
I just can't stand it
Here comes the night again.
