"Must be an omen," he muttered to himself. He stood there, staring at the door, debating whether or not to take the leap. "It's now or never. If I don't take a chance now, I think I'll always regret it. So, here goes," he said, reaching for the handle to the door and pulling it open. A passerby looked at him strangely, a well-dressed man talking to himself on the street? The stranger shook his head and walked on as Larry entered the building, walked over to the elevator, pressed the "up" button and waited. When the elevator arrived, he was relieved to find it empty; he got on and pressed the button for the 6th floor, where Cage & Fish were located. As the elevator made it's slow descent upward, he began to have second thoughts. What if Ally refused to see him? What if she made a scene in front of the entire office? Even if they were in her office, the rest of the staff would be eavesdropping outside the door. This wasn't right. He needed to get off the elevator and rethink things. He desperately pressed the buttons for other floors, but he was too late. The elevator bell rang for his floor and the door slowly opened. "Well, this is it," he said to himself, and bracing himself for any possible onslaught, he stepped off the elevator. Much to his surprise the entire office was deserted. There wasn't a soul around any where. "What in the world?" he said to himself. He'd never been at the office when it wasn't buzzing with activity. It was then that he noticed a small sign posted near the receptionist's desk, which read: "Closed for the wedding of two of our attorneys. All clients welcome to join us at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 110 Beacon Street, 6:00 p.m" "A wedding?" Larry exclaimed aloud. "It can't be! Oh God, what if it's Ally's? She sure looked to be in love with that guy she was kissing. God, it's too late. Why in the world didn't I do something sooner?" He looked at his watch. It was just now five minutes until 6:00. "Maybe I've still got time. I've got to get to the church!" And Larry rushed back onto the elevator, pressing the button for the first floor, over and over again, as if this would make the elevator move more quickly. When the elevator finally reached the bottom floor and the door opened, Larry ran out of the building and onto the street and looked for a cab to hail. Of course, there wasn't one in sight. So he took off on a run, down the street. Beacon Street was over 20 blocks away but he'd just have to try to make a dash for it. Fifteen minutes later, Larry arrived at St. Paul's, breathing hard and out of breath. He paused for a moment at the bottom of the stairs, and then trotted up them, a little more slowly this time, trying to catch his breath. When he reached the top, he pulled open the heavy doors and quietly walked into the foyer of the church. From inside the church, he could hear someone singing. "Who is that guy singing? He sure doesn't have much of a voice," muttered Larry to himself. He quietly let himself in one of the back doors to the church, and stood there, in the shadows, un-noticed by any of the people, whose attention was focused at the front of the church. As he watched closely, it dawned on him that the guy singing, the guy with the awful voice, wasn't the guy he'd seen kissing Ally! It was John Cage up there in a tuxedo! Huh?
All the time I thought that I was wrong
All the time, all the wasted time
All the time I thought there's only me
"I do swear that I'll always be there. I'd give anything and everything and I will always care. Through weakness and strength, happiness and sorrow, for better or worse, I will love you with every beat of my heart," Nelle's voice could clearly be heard throughout the church. "What incredible words. From Nelle! That's just how I feel about Ally," Larry said to himself. Just then, Vonda stood up near the choir's pews and she began singing one of the most beautiful songs Larry had ever heard:
From this moment I have been blessed
You're the reason I believe in love
From this moment as long as I live
"At some bar. I heard some of the guests saying they couldn't believe a reception was gonna be held at a bar! Sounded cool to me, though," the boy said, as he left. Larry just nodded his head and left the church.
