Chapter Four

Next scene takes place in John's office, where Ally has gone seeking someone to talk to.

Ally walks into John's office, "Well, John, I did it."

"Did what?" asked John, looking up from the papers he was reading at his desk.

Ally plopped down into the chair opposite John's desk, "I've finally admitted to myself that I still love Larry, so I broke up with Glenn."

"I've been wondering when you would come to that realization. I've known since he left last spring, that he wasn't one that you would bounce back from easily. I'm sorry to hear about Glenn - he's a good guy. How'd he take it?"

"Oh, you're right - he's a real sweetheart. He was really understanding about it, more understanding than I really deserve, when I knew deep down that I'd never love him, at least, not like I loved Billy or Larry." Ally paused for a moment before something hit her, "Hey, if you already knew that I still loved Larry, how come you didn't tell me?" she demanded.

"Well, Ally, that's just something you had to figure out for yourself. So tell me, what are you going to do about this new-found realization? Think it's time to go to Detroit?" John asked, with a smile.

"Oh, John, I just don't know. It seems to me if he were interested in getting back with me, he would have done it by now, don't you think?"

"Well, Ally, I remember the time you two had had an argument. Remember, during the Kimmie trial? You were at the courthouse and got upset with how he had treated Kimmie on the witness stand. You accused him of being mean and left in a hurry. I met up with Larry just as you were rushing off. I remember telling Larry that you get emotional and I suggested he go after you. Larry replied that he didn't do that. I think I told him that if he did, it'd make it harder to live life alone. The man's shown that he's stubborn and has a lot of pride.

"But, I also know he loves you. If you'll remember when he'd left for Detroit and you were having all those doubts. Remember, what I told you? ‘I never for a second thought he wouldn't come back. The man knows what he has.' And he came back, didn't he?"

"Yeah, but, he left again. Even after promising to stay forever. And now it's been over eight months and there's no sign of him now, is there?" Ally frowned at the thought.

"Ally," John sighed, "it took you this long to come to the realization, or at least to admit to yourself, that you still love him. Knowing Larry, don't you think it'll take him just as long, if not longer, to also realize it and admit it, much less act on it? Remember, he's stubborn. Give him time. I'll say it again: the man knows what he had and he'll be back to reclaim it. I'm pretty sure of it. So the question is, are you going to wait for him to come after you or are you going to take the bull by the horns and go after him, instead?"

"I just don't know, John; I guess I'll have to give it some thought." She looked pensive for a moment, before brightening up and saying, "In the meantime, we've got your wedding day after tomorrow and should really be focusing on that; I know Nelle must be needing help with last minute details. By the way, I don't think I've told you just how happy I am for you. It's going to be a beautiful wedding and I truly believe you've found the one to last you the rest of your life. I'm so happy for you," Ally said smiling, as she reached over and gave John a tender hug. "And, thanks for always listening to me; you are a true friend, the best. I'll let you get back to work." And Ally left his office, as the following song starts to play

Don't know why,
I'm survivin' every lonely day
When there's got to be no chance for me,
My life would end
and it doesn't matter how I cry
My tears, so far, are a waste of time
If I turn away
Am I strong enough to see it through?
Go crazy is what I will do

If I can't have you
I don't want nobody, baby
If I can't have you . . . uh-huh, oh
If I can't have you
I don't want nobody baby
If I can't have you . . . uh-hoh

Can't let go and it doesn't matter how I try
I gave it all so easily to you my love
To dreams that never will come true
Am I strong enough to see it through?
Go crazy is what I will do

If I can't have you
I don't want nobody, baby
If I can't have you . .. Uh-huh, oh
If I can't have you
I don't want nobody, baby
If I can't have you . . . uh-hoh

[Calista had been very concerned about this scene, when she first got her script. She had gone to David's office, after receiving and reading it, protesting the scene.]

"David," she said, as she rushed into his office early Tuesday morning. "I've got a really big problem with this script! Why in the world would you include a scene discussing Ally going after Larry. You know that Robert's got four more months to go, at least that's what ET was reporting last night. Don't you think this will be misleading to the viewer, to intimate that Larry might show up, when you and I both know he won't be able to, at least not this season! I just heard yesterday, the DA confirmed that Robert will have to complete the final four months of his rehab. More than misleading, I know some of our more vocal viewers are going to be outraged by this! I just don't think it makes much sense to even go there, if it's never gonna happen that Larry comes back. Where are you going with this? I think I really deserve to know."

David looked up at her, from his desk. "Calista, calm down. I remember you telling me just a few weeks ago that you trusted me and my judgment. Where's that trust now?" he asked with a smile. "I heard what the DA had to say yesterday - couldn't miss it since it was covered in all of the newspapers this morning, too. (The media was always rushing to cover any news about Robert's case that they could get their hands on. Despite being out of the public's eyes for the past eight months, Robert was still foremost in many people's thoughts, particularly since Ally's ratings had taken quite a plunge with the new season and the media found that people were always interested to know anything going on with him.)

"We're just going to have to accept that Robert has to finish out his rehab. I know we were hoping he'd be released early and that we'd all like him to be back, but the most important thing here, don't forget, is Robert's well-being. If the DA, and his counselor, by the way, think he needs to finish his rehab, then that's probably what's needed and we'll just have to do what we can from our end for the show's sake."

David felt a little guilty about misleading Calista, although he rationalized that he wasn't really lying to her. The DA had made it a condition of Robert's returning to work on Ally that he finish the four more months of live-in rehab. It was for his well-being. It's just that he, and the DA, were not sharing with the world, the fact that Robert was going to be allowed to work, through those final four months of treatment.

"As far as the script goes, for reasons that I cannot share, I am confident that we're taking this in the right direction. I can tell you this one thing, though, and maybe it'll help. One of my motivations with this scene is to show Ally finally addressing the entire issue of Larry leaving and the feelings she has for Larry. This entire season, that's not really been addressed and I truly believe that's one of the biggest problems the fans have had with accepting the direction we've been taking this year. I realized that until the issue is finally resolved in Ally's mind, the fans will never let go of the idea that Larry will or should come back. Does that make any sense?"

"Yes, I suppose it does. But from how the scene proceeds, it just seems as if you're leading up to a confrontation between Ally and Larry. I mean, are you going to have her going to Detroit? How in the world can we do this without Robert? You can have just so many flashback scenes."

"In addressing this issue, don't you think it makes sense for Ally to consider going to Detroit to see Larry? But she doesn't necessarily need to decide to go, even if she does consider it, now does she?"

"You're right, it does make sense. I guess I'm just feeling what so many of the fans are feeling, that the right ending should be Larry returning to Ally. And I guess that scene just got my hopes up and then the DA crushed them with her report."

"As I said before, there's some things I just can't share with you now. Just believe me when I tell you I know what I'm doing. I've got confidence that it'll all work out so that Ally, and the fans can accept what's gonna happen. Well, if that's all, Calista, let's get to work."

"Ok, I guess I'll just have to trust you. Thanks for listening."
