“Hey, guys. Still here? When are you two planning on getting on your way? In fact, what time does your plane leave?” Ally asked them. “We’re not in any rush. We’re staying in town tonight and flying out in the morning,” John said. “Hey, you owe me a dance before the night is over, ok?” “Next song I will,” Ally said, with a smile. Nelle turned to Larry, asking “and do I get to dance with you?” “Actually, I’m going to sing the next song. Can we do it later?” Larry asked, as Ally and John both turned to look at him with open mouths. Larry got up and walked to the stage, taking the microphone from Elaine, who had just finished her song. “Now, what is he up to?” Ally muttered to John, as he led her to the dancefloor. She watched him whisper something to Vonda, at the piano, who in turn said something to the rest of the band. And then they started playing and Larry began to sing.
Kiss me my darling, be mine tonight Tomorrow will be too late, it’s now or never My love won’t wait.
He went down on one knee, with one hand clasped to his chest, and continued,
My heart was captured, my soul surrendered I’d spend a lifetime waiting for the right time Now that you’re near the time is here at last
“I think he’s trying to give you a message, Ally,” John said softly, as Larry continued to sing, his glance never wavering from Ally.
Kiss me my darlin, be mine tonight Tomorrow will be too late, it’s now or never My love won’t wait
If we lost true love and sweet devotion Your lips excite me, let your arms invite me For who knows when we’ll meet again this way
“Well, Ally, don’t forget that conversation we had in my office just the other day. It looks to me as if just as much happiness is right within your reach. You should go for it.” “We’ll see,” was all Ally replied, as she turned to walk toward the stage. She couldn’t help laughing herself, because the image of Larry up there was so comical.
Kiss me my darling, be mine tonight Tomorrow will be too late, it’s now or never My love won’t wait.
And without a question, Larry followed Ally out onto the street. Just outside the set, Robert and Calista looked at each other and Calista couldn’t help laughing. “Robert, you idiot! Do you have any idea how foolish you just looked, singing that hokey song, and making all those ridiculous gestures? Those weren’t in the script!” Robert said, “I know, but what could I do -- David had the song in the script. Figured I might as well do it up right!” and he grinned at Calista, disarming her completely. She laughed out loud. They turned to go back onto the set, and for the first time since Robert had returned, there was a little bit of camaraderie between the two of them, just like before.
