I've never really been big into blaxploitation films. Not because I don't like them, but more because of lack of exposure. They were never really big on late night TV growing up. But once video became readily availible I checked a few of the horror ones out like Blacula, Blackenstein, Dr. Black and Mr. Hyde, The Brother From Another Planet (and of course some Jim Kelly action flicks) and well they were right up my ally.
These films were cheap and crappy and incredibly cool and you just knew these filmakers had something to say.
But then the '80s came, and the hey-day of blaxploitation seemed past. Of course there were exceptions like Spike Lee's 'Tales From The Hood' but blaxploitation-horror sadly seemed largely a thing of the past. But in between then and now, when shot-on-video z-budgets gem were the rage, came this flick:
BLACK DEVIL DOLL FROM HELL
Now this film is remarkable in that it reverses the typical blaxploitation-horror modus-operandi. Usually there is a popular movie and then they make a blaxploitation version after. But this one predates CHILD'S PLAY by 4 years.Of course, this piece of craps whole budget was probably less than what they paid to make Chuckys box.
It looks like it was shot with a camcorder and there certainly is no oscars to be won here (but then who would want one).
The story concerns this church going woman who comes upon a doll (it looks like if Bob Marley was a ventriloquist dummy) in a junk shop and feels compelled to buy it. Of course she is warned that the doll always seems to return to the shop, but she buys it anyway. She takes it home, takes a shower, fantasizes that the doll is alive watching her in the shower, and, like all holy-rollers, mastrabates and goes to sleep. Later she awakens to find the doll really is alive and has tied her up and then it starts to rape her. Of course, like all church girls, she likes it and really gets into it.
And like all Devil Dolls From Hell, the doll leaves when its done. And this church cooze really wants some more. But the true horror for her begins. She just can't find a man to satisfy her like the doll.
This movie has got to be seen to be believed. It is completely hilarious. The doll has the filthiest mouth and seeing a ventriloquist dummy getting it on and talking dirty will bust your sides. This movie proves that Stupid is Funny!!
