Santa and Brownie Points
Posted Monday, December 24, 2001, 04:00:00 PM by Doug Davis
This morning Christopher got dressed by himself. Tina said to him at breakfast, "I'm sure Santa will give you brownie points for that". Nicole, a new Brownie, spoke up and said, "He [Christopher] isn't in Brownies!"

Brownie Induction
Posted Saturday, December 15, 2001, 12:34:11 PM by Doug Davis

Today Nicole was inducted into the Brownie's branch of the Girl Scouts. She seems to really enjoy the activities and has already earned a few patches.

This afternoon they all went ice skating and received a "try it" patch.

Reading
Posted Thursday, December 13, 2001, 07:20:18 AM by Doug Davis
Age: 7 years, 9 months, 26 days
Last night I noticed quite a few of Nicole's books laying around. Each had a book mark in it. She loves to read. She's now reading books from the "Magic Tree House" series and seems to really like them. Her Granddad also introduced her to Mother Westwind books. We've been checking them out of the library and she's enjoying those stories as well.

Great Quote
Posted Tuesday, December 04, 2001, 11:52:30 AM by Doug Davis

Age: 7 years, 9 months, 17 days

Last night I was talking to Nicole and, since she's learning Spanish, I thought she'd be interested to know about one of Dallas' candidates for Mayor. I told her, "A man named 'Domingo' is running for Mayor of Dallas." She replied, "Why is he fleeing the city?"

Christmas Program
Posted Friday, November 30, 2001, 03:53:34 PM by Doug Davis
Nicole sang at her schools Christmas program last night. She did a wonderful job. They sang a Pinata song in English and Spanish. At the end she and the dual language classes sang with the older choir in a medley that included Silent Night in English and Spanish while the older kids sang a song on Peace. It was wonderful.

Brave at School
Posted Friday, November 30, 2001, 03:50:07 PM by Doug Davis
Nicole brought home a paper the other day marked 85%. She explained that she was supposed to describe ten attributes of owls, but the teacher thought she only had eight. It was a misunderstanding since Nicole counted owls with tufts and owls without tufts as two items (an example). Tina asked Nicole to talk to her teacher and tell her the misunderstanding. Yesterday she was brave and talked to her teacher about it. The teacher write a wonderful note about how brave and mature Nicole was and how well she explained her knowlege of owls and she raised her grade to 100%.

Big Words
Posted Thursday, November 15, 2001, 02:15:18 PM by Doug Davis
The other day before bedtime I pulled out the addition flash cards. I gave Christopher some legos to count out the answers. I gave Nicole the harder cards. She did pretty well but, being tired, got frustrated easily with the harder problems. Finally, she threw back her head and exclaimed "I can't do this without any manipulatives!" Well, at least there's no problem with language.

Halloween
Posted Wednesday, October 31, 2001, 02:18:42 PM by Doug Davis
Nicole dressed up as Princess Leah from Star Trek for Halloween. She looked pretty cute with those two big hair buns on the side of her head!

Sweet Goodbyes
Posted Tuesday, October 23, 2001, 08:22:41 AM by Doug Davis

Nicole's Age: 7 years, 8 months, 5 days

I've written before about Nicole waving from her bedroom window as I drive off to work. Now she likes to open her window so she can call out to me. She says things like "I love you" and "Have a nice day at work". It's truly one of the highlights of my day.

Height & Weight
Posted Monday, October 15, 2001, 01:23:07 PM by Doug Davis
I measured Nicole last night. She weighs 62.0 pounds and is 4 foot 1 13/16 inches tall.

Report Card
Posted Friday, October 05, 2001, 11:12:39 AM by Doug Davis
Nicole received her first 2nd grade report card today. She got all A's except for a B in science. As I understand it, she forgot to turn in some of her assignments in science and that's why she got the lower grade. She either didn't pay attention or was confused by the teacher's instructions. We're encouraging her to do better next time. But we are very proud of how well she's doing.

More Spanish
Posted Monday, October 01, 2001, 12:38:10 PM by Doug Davis
I'm getting used to hearing more Spanish around the house as Nicole learns more and more. Now I hear as many "Si Papa"'s as I do "Yes, Daddy"'s

Commercials
Posted Thursday, September 27, 2001, 01:43:17 PM by Doug Davis
Tina and I were talking about new light fixtures last night. One we liked came from the company Progress Lighting. Nicole overheard what we were saying and said, "That's the company that will find you a good price even if it's not with them!" She was refering to a commercial for the Progressive Insurance company. Who says TV and commercials don't affect children?

Fancy Words
Posted Monday, September 24, 2001, 01:03:11 PM by Doug Davis
A couple weeks ago I asked Nicole how her English and Spanish spelling was coming along. She said it was fine and that several of the words on her spelling list were cognates. Pretty big word for a second grader. In fact, I didn't even know what it meant until she told me they were words in one language that were similar to words in another. Like "president" and "presidente". I guess you're never too old to learn.

Donuts With Dad
Posted Thursday, September 20, 2001, 09:37:17 AM by Doug Davis
I took Nicole to school today for "Donuts with Dad" day. It was very casual and fun. Just went in, had some donuts and juice and enjoyed seeing all the kids and dads. Nicole was extremely excited about it, which is fun for me. I love being with her.
