Commercials

Tina and I were talking about new light fixtures last night. One we liked came from the company Progress Lighting. Nicole overheard what we were saying and said, "That's the company that will find you a good price even if it's not with them!" She was refering to a commercial for the Progressive Insurance company. Who says TV and commercials don't affect children?
Fancy Words

A couple weeks ago I asked Nicole how her English and Spanish spelling was coming along. She said it was fine and that several of the words on her spelling list were cognates. Pretty big word for a second grader. In fact, I didn't even know what it meant until she told me they were words in one language that were similar to words in another. Like "president" and "presidente". I guess you're never too old to learn.
Donuts With Dad

I took Nicole to school today for "Donuts with Dad" day. It was very casual and fun. Just went in, had some donuts and juice and enjoyed seeing all the kids and dads. Nicole was extremely excited about it, which is fun for me. I love being with her.
Comfort in the Storm

We had a storm last night and Nicole slept with Christopher during it to comfort each other. Nicole was very sweet to her brother. (see more in Christopher's Journal)
Soccer But they wore out quickly and I believe they tied at three each. Nicole played goalie for three quarters and did a great job.

Today was Nicole's first soccer game of the season. They started off strong and soon led three to nothing.
New Mice
Posted Friday, September 14, 2001, 04:00:00 PM by Doug Davis
Tina called around and found a pet store with fancy mice. Today after school she took the kids and they both picked out a mouse. Nicole's is almost all black with very sleek fur. She's naming her "Black Beauty".
Spelling As you know, Nicole is in a dual language class this year. It's taught in both Engish and Spanish. We have some concern over the way it's being taught. I'm sure it's nothing that we can't work out, but the teacher has been assigning what we think are very hard spelling words. They are especially difficult considering they have to spell them in both languages and without the words being pronounced to them. They look at a picture and then must know the words and spell them. I guess today's spelling test went very poorly (don't know how Nicole did) and will redo the words next week. They contribute some of the problem to this week's tragedy with the World Trade Center towers and the Pentagon. Here are some of the words on Nicole's list this week:

We went to the pet shop last night, but they didn't have any "fancy" mice. So we were unable to get the kids their new pets. They had some white common mice (not for pets) and the kids had a great time watching them in their cage. They giggled and giggled.
New Mice Nicole and Christopher are both excited about getting new mice. Nicole's died last Tuesday. Now they plan to get one each and I think tonight's the night.

Nicole's 2nd Grade Class Nicole started second grade on August 21. This will be a very interesting year because her class is a dual language class. She'll be learning in both English and Spanish. We're very excited about this opportunity, but we're watching closely to make sure that she keeps up with all subjects, not just language.
