THE Help-age International and Help-age, Sri Lanka with the scouts inaugurated a project in October 1996 to assist elders above 60 years who had been dislodged from their homes due to the north and east war and are now residents in the Welfare centres of the Puttalam district, a Scout Association press release said.
The Help-age Sri Lanka selected the Sri Lanka Scout Association as their project partner for this program involving the scouts in the Puttalam district. The objectives of the project are to provide assistance to elders in 10 centres to improve their health and quality of life through medical care, nutritional supplements and general practical support. One-hundred beneficiaries (50 males and 50 females) were selected from the 10 refugee camps for the purpose.
The Help-age Sri Lanka while providing money has also given a van for the use of the project. Each beneficiary is befriended by a young scout who by frequent visits sees to their needs. Medical camps are held regularly with the help of the medical officers of the Puttalam and Chilaw hospitals and others in the area. Medicines are purchased or obtained from the hospital. Weekly herbal drinks are prepared by a leader chosen from the selected elders. Nutritional foods with other daily needs are given to the elders once a month.
Sing songs, camp fires and other get-togethers are arranged by the scouts with the elders to promote inter-generational activities. The project worked out during the last 11 months has produced good results with great success. The program is handled by a Co-ordinator Mr. Rohan Fernando, an experienced scouter of the Sri Lanka Scout Association.
