Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year (also known as "Lunar New Year" and "Spring Festival") starts with the New Moon on the first day of the new year and ends on the full moon 15 days later. The date of the new year is determined by the lunar/solar calendar rather than the Western (Gregorian) calendar (hence "Lunar New Year"), so the date of the holiday varies from late January to mid February.

Even though Chinese New Year lasts for 15 days, not all the 15 days are celebrated taday. In China, only three days are celebrated, whereas in Singapore, typically two days are official holidays. However, for this year, because the second day of Chinese New Year falls on a Sunday, Monday also becomes a public holiday, meaning that three days are celebrated in all.

This year is the Year of the Goat.
