THE MYTH OF PANDORA

Zeus, the father of all the gods, knew that Prometheus had given fire to man, which was breaking the command of the gods. Zeus stored up great anger on Prometheus, and thus decided to take his outrageous anger out on mankind. Zeus called upon Hephastus to create Pandora with all the loveliness of the immortal gods themselves. All the gods presented her with many precious gifts inlcuding beauty, the skill of weaving, an many more. When this creature was completed, the gods stood back and admired the first women and named her Pandora, which means "all-gifted". As well as these many other gifts, the gods gave Pandora a golden box, yet cautioned her never to open it. The gods had put dreadful things inside, and as her curiosity became more intense, she couldn't handle it and finally, Pandora opened the box she had been forbidden to open. All the evils were released into the world, and she immediately shut the box leaving only one gift, Hope.
