Designing Your Character:
It is time to use that little thing call imagination.
Game engines are getting to the point where it is no longer “what can I do.” But “what do I want to do.” After I found out that you were able to add particle systems to a UT 2003 model I have had this idea; of a character with some kind of motor on his back.
The way I came up with model was to look at what the models in UT 2003 looked like and tried to keep that in mind as I design him. So when it is running around in game it doesn’t look out of place. This is very important for one good reason. Game developers love to see that you are able to make a model that not only is cool and different to the norm, but also fits the game style of art as well. Employers also love to see that an artist can work out ideas on paper before they waste heaps of time in Max.
The other thing that can help you come up with a character idea is to give your character a story. The story with this character is that he has made a power generator to run a shield generator that he has stolen from some one which knows a lot more then him.
Remember you are building a character that you want the player to get into try to appeal to the player be giving the character a personality. Always give your character a name at least.
I find it is also helpful to do some more detail pictures of the more important bits of the character. For example the back pack of my character is the most important part to the over all model so I have done a more detail picture of it to help me out.
When you have your 2D art done, it is time to start modelling.
