INSPIRATION FOR SALESPEOPLE: A COLLECTION OF HEARTWARMING QUOTATIONS TO MOVE THE SOUL

08/25

Finally! On time, and a wide selection of quotes,  garnered from a hitherto unused stack of lame quote books.  The best part is, there's seven of them, so that should keep me rolling in lame triteness for quite some time.  Moving along, there's no particular theme to today's quotes, so I'll just set them out in any old order.  Enjoy!

1. "Good is the enemy of great."

Deeper meaning:
W I believe this falls somewhere along the lines of 'never settle for good enough."  This would certainly be the logical conclusion, since it was followed up in the manual by a lame dissertation on the horrors of doing 'well enough', which apparently isn't actually good enough unless it's your best.  So you see, good is the enemy of great because it stops people from giving 110% and all that jazz.  The silly thing about this is, of course, that regardless of how much effort you put into selling furniture, it's highly unlikely to make very much difference.  Most of the time the people coming in are either too arbitrary and stupid or have already made up their mind, so really, it's kind of pointless to give much more effort than that which is required to paste a fake smile on your face and be as greedy as possible while seeming as benign as possible.  It's a really neat trick for those who can pull it off to perfection.  Guess that's where good being their enemy comes in.

I was gonna make a clever play on words with enemy and enema, but all I could get was this scraggly-looking bunch of firefighters.  Fear them!

2. "Intentions are thoughts looking for a goal.."

Deeper meaning:
How fearfully clever, or at least stupid.  Intentions ARE goals when you get right down to it, so this quote is really kind of stupid if you look at it.  At any rate,  I guess it's trying to hype goal-setting, which is more or less the whole point of the cards upon which I have to write these stupid slogans.  Nothing terribly deep, I suppose, but hey, everyone needs to be reminded of the blatantly obvious once in a while.

I bet I know what HER goal is... or at least her intentions.

Deeper Meaning:
Another glorious quote from the You are the Bitch of Opportunity set, which can mostly be found in this previous update.  The jist of it is that you should basically capitalize on all opportunities, and quickly at that.  Not a bad mindset to be preaching when your goal in life is to hawk cheap furniture off on people before they catch on and realize what junk they're being sold.  Consumer Tip: Never buy a computer from a major department store.  You'll rue the day you did.

3.   "Opportunity doesn't knock twice.."

Another consumer tip: Never buy flippers from this little punk.

4. "If you want to get out of the rat race, stop racing with rats."

Deeper Meaning:
DYou are better than everyone else! You can rise above your woefully low station in life to become... slightly less crappy! It's a baldfaced lie, of course, since to be a good salesperson you need a smile the size of Idaho and the ability to subsist on a diet of souls, coffee, and cigarettes, as well as the stamina to withstand fourteen hour days.  Heck, if you can emerge from that with a positive outlook, you're doing well, I'd say.  On the other hand, you'll still be racing with rats, if that's the expression to be used here.  Too bad, I suppose.

The favorite in today's second race was Mighty Mouse,  paying 3.5:1.  Trifecta was $115.34.   Next race update in minutes.
