Forbidden Paths - Battle Explained

Below is a table of all the Race/Profession combinations currently available for play in Forbidden Paths.

The numbers to the right of each combination describe that character's beginning stats in each of the given areas. For example, a Dwarf/Warrior begins with 100 health points (the highest possible), 40 attack, 50 defense, and so on. Note that since mana is used to cast spells, this non-magic wielding character has no points in that column.

Characters can increase their stats in any and/or all categories where they start with at least 1 (one) point. Individual characters will increase as they gain experience - and I will award the points when and how I deem appropriate (if you whine to me about this I am likely to pit your character against a very high level baddie).

Battles/attacks are categorized into three types: SIMPLE (hand-to-hand combat), DISTANCE (shooting an arrow or throwing an object), and MAGIC (involving magic). I will explain simple battles below, while distance and magic attacks are explained elsewhere.

Each simple battle will be limited to no more than two attackers and two defenders (eg. 1:1 or 1:2 or 2:1 or 2:2). I will calculate the outcome of each simple battle using a program that inputs the attacker(s) data: health percentage (how much of their maximum health do they currently have - ie. are they wounded), attack skill, defense skill, weapon and armor percentages, and a few randomizations for reality's sake; and compares that data to the similar data for the defender(s). Possible battle outcomes include the defender(s) losing health points (and dying if they go into the negative), the attacker(s) losing health points, or neither losing health points.

The exact manner in which I determine everything is somewhat complicated, so suffice it to say that the stronger your character is and the better weapons and armor he carries, the better chance he has to prevail in battle (well, duh). Also, as a bit of a twist, the attacker will only lose one-half of the health points he normally would when the defender retaliates (an automatic response to an attack). Furthermore, some characters would prefer to run rather than do battle in some cases, and depending on thier abilities, may be able to escape an attack.

If you ever have a legitimate question as to why a battle turned out like it did, you can contact me and I will try to help you understand better. Until then just remember, in simple combat the bigger, meaner, stronger, and tougher you are the better your chances of coming out on top.
