I have personally decided to gather as much data as possible on our favourite sailor senshi to produce detailed as possible character sketches of the various characters in the anime Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon. Please report any errors to me, Gregory Lam. Questions, comments and suggestions are always welcome!

deep background: present lives

All characters reside in Tokyo, Japan. Most of them live in the ward of Minato-ku in the district of Juubangai (10th Section). The senshi and Endymion, excluding Pluto, have been reincarnated as humans. They only become "Lunarians" when they transform. Incidentally, Naoko Takeuchi lives in Juuban too.

Sailor Moon

Tsukino Usagi("rabbit of the moon")[1] - leader of the senshi, but has every conceivable vice: she's an apathetic sloth, a glutton, a klutz, an under- achiever, an airhead and is always late for school. Despite that, she is very loyal, has a good heart and wants everyone to be happy. She at first didn't take her destiny very seriously, but now has become a tad more mature. Still, her favourite pastime is whiling the hours playing Sailor V at the Crown Game arcade. Her dreams generally consist of Mamoru/Kamen/Motoki or about her eating lots of food. Formerly went to Juuban Junior High with Ami and Mako. She is in love with Mamoru, who affectionally calls her "Usako". She also owns Luna and has a pesky little brother named Shingo. She is the moon princess, daughter of the late Queen Serenity[34]. She is most recognizable by her long rabbit ear-like ponytails with hairballs on her head, which has earned her the nickname "odango atama" ("dumpling head", "meatball head" in the dub).

Tuxedo Kamen

Chiba Mamoru("earth protector")[1] - at first the bane of Usagi's existence, until she realized he was Tuxedo Kamen. He was Rei's former boyfriend[15]. He lives in a decadent apartment alone, his father and mother killed in a car crash[34]. A true romantic, he likes roses[15] and jogging. He is self-reliant and hides his feelings from others. He once dabbled in modelling[29]. He's been brainwashed [36], had amnesia[47-59] and discovered he was Kamen in [26] and Endymion, administrator of Earth and Usagi's fiancee, in [35]. He has also manifested himself as the telekinetic psychic projection Tsukikage no knight[49-59]. He and the Earth seems to have some homeostatic dependency for each other[164]. Usagi affectionally calls him "Mamo-chan". He "dumped" Usagi in [SMR2] after having visions of her dying because she had become dependent on him[61]. Before [34], he was a REAL jerk to Usagi. He currently studies at the Azabu Institute of Technology, and drives a motorbike. He wears glasses for reading. He wears a black tuxedo, cape, top hat and a ballroom mask, and attacks with red roses and his extending baton.

Sailor Mercury

Mizuno Ami("beauty of water")[8] - the brains of the team. She's a bookworm, has a defensive attack, and she owns a pocket computer and VR visor. She is usually seen buried in some textbook, a testament to her working ethic. She takes juku[8], was once offered a scholarship abroad[62], and plans to become a doctor like her separated mother, whom she lives with in an apartment[62]. Her father is an artist[151]. She is kind, objective, level-headed and dresses conservatively, and the others always suggest she get out more. Her school marks are rated #1 in Japan. She wears reading glasses. She has an unusual talent for video games[8,191]. She's kinda in a relationship with Urawa Ryo(Greg!)[41], the fifth nijizuishou carrier. Her sailor fuku and eyes are blue, and her hair is short and blue.

Sailor Mars

Hino Rei("spirit* of fire")[10] - a stubborn, short-tempered Shintoist. Being a priestess, she can often sense things the others can't, communicate with the fire god, and exorcise spirits with ofuda. Lives at Hikawa Shrine on Sendai Hill[10] with her grandfather and temple worker Kumada Yuuichirou (Chad)[30], who she sorta likes. Her two pet crows are named Deimos and Phobos. Goes to the catholic TA Private Girls School. Favourite pastime is bickering with Usagi and/or Chibi Usa; she originally also wanted to be leader[26], but voluntarily withdrew in the way of destiny. She is very traditional, an otaku with a massive manga collection, an accomplished singer[54], and a good skier[38]. While usually maintaining a self-righteous attitude, she can also be childish. Called the "strongest senshi"[45]. Her fuku is red, her eyes are violet-black, and she wears red heels and red star-shaped earrings and has very long black hair. (* also "beauty" in the Chinese vernacular)

Sailor Jupiter

Kino Makoto("honesty, of wood")[25] - called "Mako" for short. She was transferred from school to school for always getting into fights[25]. She is naturally very aggressive, independent, reckless and strong and knows karate, yet has a nurturing side; she likes to cook and clean[25-6], and plans to be a famous chef someday. Has a soft spot for Usagi, for it was she who befriended her when the others stayed away. She also has a quirk where every hunky guy she sees reminds her of her ex-boyfriend. Has a mutual friend Shinozaki(Ken) [49] who helped her when this boyfriend dumped her. There is evidence that she is may be a bisexual[96,134]. She's also an excellent figure skater[39], but she's not very much better than Usagi in academics[27]. She's, with Haruka, one of the tallest senshi. She lives alone in an apartment after her parents died in an airplane crash. She has a lightning rod in her tiara to perform Supreme Thunder. Her brown hair is in a ponytail and she has green eyes; she wears a dark green sailor fuku and rose earrings. In the [manga], she is also a gang member.

Sailor Venus

Aino Minako("surrounded by beauty of love")[33] - Is an actress, most famous for being Sailor V, which was a previous manga by Takeuchi Naoko in 1991. She's generally kind, gentle and mischievous, likes being with kids[52] and enjoys shopping, stuffed toys and romantic adventure movies. However, she can get competitive. She's very agile and athletic, and was once part of the volleyball team. In SMR[78], her personality COMPLETELY changes; she becomes a flirtatious, vain and argumentative shopaholic. :( She likes quoting proverbs, but always messes them up. Formerly went to the private Shibakouen Junior High. Her past is rather obscure, but we do know she used to live in London, where she befriended policewoman Katarina[42]. So, Minako is also supposed to be very fluent in English(yeah, right)! She owns Artemis, and discovered her true identity before Usagi. While the fourth to appear[33], she has been seen as Sailor V on merchandise since [1]. Note: A lot of SM was inspired by SV. She has blue eyes, long blonde hair with a red bow, and an orange fuku.

Sailor Chibi-Moon

Chibi Usa("little rabbit")[60] - Usagi's little 900 year old daughter from the future. Chibi Usa is a nickname; her name is Usagi Tsukino too. Is like Usagi Sr. an awful lot. She seems to always get into fights with Usagi, and speaks roughly. She is sent back into the past to train with the team as Chibi Moon later in SMS[103]. Serenity intended her to train to become a fighter as well as in making friends. Her presence in the 20th century was also for her social training to lead to a "special meeting" (with Hotaru, as we find out). Has enrolled in Juuban Elementary School in [81]. Owns Luna-P, a Luna-head computer and a time key. She is also the holder of the pure heart crystal[124] + the golden mirror[164]. Also has a daughterly love for Mamoru. She was once brainwashed into the Black Lady[85]. She returns back to the future in SMS* [172]!!! Sports red eyes, pink hair with elongated rabbit-like "odango" and an identical fuku to Sailor Moon.

The outer senshi are definitely more mature, serious and quiet than the inner. All outer senshi return briefly in SMS*, ([167-172]) and return again near the end of the series. Feel free to cheer.

Sailor Uranus

Ten'ou Haruka("rumours cloud and sky king")[90] - Is gay, likes to dress man-like and flirt with the girls. Is a professional race car driver, but also engages in a variety of sports, from motocross[98] to track[106]; she is the top motocross champion in Asia. Off the circuit, she drives a car (illegally), a motorcycle and a helicopter. She goes to Mugen Gakuen High School. She can be extremely brash, tough and heartless when the situation becomes grim, and that sometimes bothers her. She is also fiercely determined on achieving her goals. She and Neptune once made a pact to leave each other should one fall in battle in order to continue on the goal of finding the messiah[98]. Holder of the space sword talisman[110]. By SMSS, Uranus has decided to retire from the sailor business. Her hair is cropped and blonde, and her fuku is midnight blue with a yellow bow. She sports a gold hoop earring in her left ear.
"Invited by a new age, I am the magnificent Sailor Uranus."

Sailor Neptune

Kaiou Michiru("full, king of the ocean")[90] - A quiet, artsy girl with a light sense of humour who plays the violin professionally and is Haruka's "special person". Also enjoys painting[106]. Goes to Mugen Gakuen High with Haruka. She owns a mansion by the sea and likes to go to art galleries and aquariums. Possibly harbours resentment on being a senshi, and Haruka probably isn't too thrilled about her destiny either. Her personality is more mature than the others, and she is Haruka's moderating influence. Michiru's strong conscience often gets the better of her. Holder of the deep aqua mirror talisman[110], which sees everything. With Uranus, Neptune retired in SMSS. Her hair is aqua-green, wavy and of medium length. Her fuku is aqua blue.
"Invited by a new age, I am the elegant Sailor Neptune."

It should be noted that Haruka and Michiru frequently work alone from, and sometimes against the inner senshi, especially during SMS.

Sailor Pluto

Meiou Setsuna("an instant, king of dead")[75] - the wise voice in Luna-P, has a 'cameo' in [75]. Never was reincarnated, and therefore is very, very old and her past is very uncertain. However, she has been good friends with Haruka and Michiru. She's very blunt and logical, and therefore she often seems cold and insensitive. Seems to have trouble consoling children, too. Holder of the garnet orb talisman[110]. She has the ability to control time and knows what lies ahead in the future, but she usually refuses to say. Her duty is to correct time distortions. She left in SMS to guard the time gate, (which exists out of time) and returned in [167] to fetch Hotaru. Chibi Usa affectionally calls her "Puu". "When she appears," as Kevin Bruner put it, "it is an indication that all hell is about to break loose". Her fuku is dark red and black, her eyes are crimson, her hair is dark green and knee-long and she holds the garnet rod, which is also the massive time key and contains the orb.

Sailor Saturn

Tomoe Hotaru("glowing, of earth")[113] - leader of the outer senshi. Has a magical ability to heal wounds, have premonitions and perform telekinesis. She's quiet, frail, tires easily, and doesn't have much friends - excpt Chibi Usa. When she was younger, she was killed in a lab accident but revived and possessed by Mistress Nine, who is awakened in [124]. She's the daughter of Professor Tomoe Sou Ichi and the late Tomoe Keiko and is the melancholic messiah, sort of like Shiva of Hinduism (her attack, Death Reborn Revolution, brings around "The Silence," aka Armageddon). Becomes Saturn and is later reborn as a child in [125], grows to a young 6 year-oldish girl in [167] and a 13 year-old in [168] (Sailor Chibi-Saturn!:>). Has short black hair and dark purple, piercing eyes. Her fuku was dark purple and red with sharp shoulders, but is now dark purple-blue. She is armed with the silence glaive, a staff weapon topped with dual curved blades.
"I am the melancholic warrior...Sailor Saturn"

In later episodes, the four "inner planet" scouts and the three "outer planet" scouts usually segregate themselves, with Chibi usually pairing with Usagi. As well, Usagi, Ami, Mako and Minako now all attend the same high school, Juuban High, in SMS*. About Sailor Vesta, Sailor Pallas, Sailor Juno and Sailor Ceres (the latter four were previously the Amazoness Quartet of SMSS) - the Dead Moon senshi? Only in the manga, people.

The Sailor Starlights are the rock group "The Three Lights" (sounds like disco/pop to me, though). Their sailor fuku can be described as "S&M SM". They also change from males to females during transformation (the appropriate anatomic parts decrease and increase!). They are from the planet Kinkomu, and Uranus and Neptune suspect they are alien invaders[180]. Disguised as male pop idols, the Starlights intended to seek Princess Fireball through secret messages in their songs. It should be remembered they are female; they just disguise as males. They use star-shaped headsets to transform.

Sailor Star Fighter

Kou Seiya("light of the star arrow"*)[173] - Short bluish-black hair and eyes /w tapered ponytail and loop earrings. Calls Usagi "odango-atama", and seems to enjoy flirting with her. A very tough, sportish fellow who hates to lose. He takes dancing lessons. The leader of the Starlights. Sports a black leather fuku with buckles. (* "Seiya" is probably a play on the word "seiyuu", meaning voice performer. And Seiya IS lead vocal, no less)
"Surrounded by the dark denseness of the night, Sailor Star Fighter. Stage on!"

Sailor Star Maker

Kou Taiki("light of the big air")[173] - The tallest. Dark brown hair, dark purple eyes and a long ponytail. Very studious; he is the top of his class. A practical guy, who sees the world in purely scientific terms. Sports a black leather fuku with leather straps.
"The angel of freedom who runs freely, Sailor Star Maker. Stage on!"

Sailor Star Healer

Kou Yaten("light of the night sky")[173] - The shortest of the Starlights. Short grey hair /w long ponytail, pea-green eyes. He's a squeamish, artsy guy, and seems to be always in an indifferent, grouchy mood. Has gotten attached to Luna, though[178].Sports a black leather fuku with crossed straps.
"The secret maternal movement away from death???, Sailor Star Healer. Stage on!"

"Sailor Chibi Chibi Moon"

All three cats have upturned crescent moons on their foreheads. Luna and Artemis have gold eyes and enjoy riding on the shoulders of their respective owners. Being cats, they hate water[67].

Luna(Roman moon goddess)[1] - Usagi's nanny figure and magical helper. A proud and stout black female cat who is in love with Artemis. With Artemis, their job is to train the senshi and guide them along the path of life. She lectures a lot, and detests wasting valuable time on non-essential activities. By emitting a moonbeam from her forehead, she can induce past memories; by doing somersaults, she produced the senshi's magical items[SM]. Is a deep contrast with the wobbly Usagi. Briefly transforms to human form (Kaguya Hime, moon goddess) in [SMSM]. Myers-Briggs Rating: ENTJ

Artemis(Greek moon goddess)[33] - Minako's white male cat. He made the senshi's new transformation pens and comwatches[62, manga]. Pretended to be "Central Control", Luna's moon liaison since [4] until her discovery in [37]. More laid-back than Luna. Myers-Briggs Rating: ESTJ

Diana(Roman moon goddess)[135] - the purplish grey female kitten (genetics!) of Luna and Artemis. She basically acts like a super-kawaii kitten. Enjoys travelling around on Chibi Usa's head. Purple eyes. Comes from the future in SMSS to be Chibi Usa's advisor, and returns with her in [172].

supporting characters

Tsukino Kenji[1] - Usagi's father. Is rather protective about who dates her... He is a photographer[21]. He wears glasses and has black hair.

Tsukino Ikuko[1] - Usagi's mother and a homemaker. Always seen in an apron, and has wavy blue hair.

Tsukino Shingo "Sammy"[1] - Usagi's precocious little brother, who dates Kayama Mika[5,18]. Ironically, he is a huge Sailor Moon fan. Has brown, amorphous hair.

Osaka Naru "Molly Baker"[1] - Usagi's best friend and confidante. Has auburn wavy hair. She fell in love with the late Nephrite, but now goes out with Gurio[26]. Lives with her mother in an apartment above her mom's Osa-P jewellry store. Likes to eat fried shrimp[32]. Is a monster magnet. [See my Target Naru List for complete details!] She was born in January 1, 1978.

Umino Gurio "Melvin"[1] - the stereotypical geek. Always goes to the library, and is the leading authority on any school gossip. Used to try to win Usagi's affections, but now is completely dedicated to Naru. "Naru-chan is always very bright," he once said. "She is like the sun. I always do klutzy things, and I'm probably not fit for Naru-chan. Why is Naru-chan going out with me? Maybe it's God's whim. But, I'm just happy to see Naru-chan's smile, which is like that of an angel. To protect that beautiful smile, I, Umino Gurio, can die.[95]" He once even "transformed" into Tuxedo Umino Kamen for her[32]. Has glasses and black amorphous hair. (BTW, IMO Gurio is a real smoothie when it comes to words, especially for a geek. He is a geek for geeks to follow!)

Kumada Yuuichirou "Chad"[30] - An ex-drifter, whose parents are rich. Works at Rei's shrine as Grandpa's disciple. Constantly tries to win Rei's hand. We finally see his eyes in [99] (yay). Brown unkempt hair.

Furuhata Motoki "Andrew"[2] - a friend of Mamoru's who works at the Crown Game Centre. Was once both Usagi's and Mako's unrequited love, but has a girlfriend (Nishimura Reika "Rita")[29]. Dreams of becoming a doctor and also studies at the Azabu Institute. Has a younger sister[69] Unazuki(Lizzie) who works at the Crown Cafe. Blond hair.

Grandpa Hino[10] - Rei's lively and somewhat lecherous grandfather who can be just as stubborn as Rei! Was the seventh nijizuishou carrier[30]. He is a priest who is very skilled at martial arts. Three feet tall, no hair.

Sakurada Haruna "Patricia Haruna"[1] - The junior high teacher of Usagi, Gurio and Naru, and later, Ann. She's strict and has mood swings which directly corresponds to the status of her love life (so, she's usually in a bad mood). Reddish, shoulder-length hair. She hasn't really been seen since SMS.

Queen Serenity[44] - Usagi's true mother. Died over a thousand years ago, yet still remains a ghost on the moon, who tells the senshi their past in [44] and revives Sailor Moon in [52]. Her husband was King Kronos, who died centuries before she did banishing Queen Metalia. She also had an evil sister Neherenia[150], who she had to banish to the Dead Moon. Has blue eyes and white rabbit-eared odango hair.

deep background: past lives

In the Silver Millennium, Usagi was Princess Serenity. She was engaged to Prince Endymion(Mamoru), the minister of Earth, the Golden Millennium. The other senshi(excluding Saturn) were essentially Serenity's and the kingdom's bodyguards with the outers guarding against alien invaders. Luna and Artemis were Queen Serenity's court advisors. The moon kingdom was a matriarchial society. It was destroyed in the 10th century by Queen Beryl and the Dark Kingdom in Beryl's search for the ginzuishou, which Beryl (falsely) assumed was responsible for the moon people's indefinite lifespans.[44] The [manga] also claims that the kingdom's destruction was made complete by the outer senshi, who summoned Saturn to bury the ruins. The kingdom was based in Mare Serene, the Sea of Serenity.

deep background: future lives

In the 30th century, King Endymion and Neo Queen Serenity live in and rule Crystal Tokyo[80?] with their daughter, Neo Princess Small Lady Serenity. The four other scouts act as guardians. Wiseman and the Black Moon family of the planet Nemesis attempted to destroy Crystal Tokyo, but was thwarted[SMR]. Neo Queen Serenity cannot write kanji, and urged Usagi to study in [103]. Serenity spent the last millennia trying to cook a dish that wasn't lethal.

japanese pronunciation

Things to remember: "U"'s are almost always silent, with the exception being proper names. "R"'s and "L"'s sound the same. All "g"'s in these names are hard (as in "great"). Asian names are arranged with surname first. Also, each syllable is sounded with equal emphasis. Practice and see!

-SAN, -KUN and -CHAN: These are Japanese honorific suffices. -San is usually more impersonal, like the English gender specific Mr. and Ms.(ie. Tsukino-san, Reika-san) -Kun is for your male friends. -Chan is usually appended to the names of your closest friends, females, family and relatives (ie. Ami-chan). There's also specific 'titles' for all sorts of people, including -sensei (teacher), -sempai (graduate), -dono (like -san, but better) and -sama (leader, worship).
